The Mountain Hardwear Dome Perignon Winter Hat is a classic vintage of warm, fleecy hat. Polartec Thermal Pro Nailhead fleece makes up the Dome, making it soft, comfy and light, all nice characteristics on a noggin topper.
The Dome Perignon beanie by Mountain Hardwear is easily one of the best on the market. I use it for everything from walking across campus in the middle of winter to backpacking in the mountains, and it has never failed me! Wicks away moisture with ease, retains body heat well, and protects your head and ears from the wind, and it's very comfortable to wear; everything that's in its job description. It does muffle sound a bit, but not to any real extremity. Do make sure that you either try one on first or know the measurements of your head before buying, as this is a windstopper product, and won't do you much good if you've got either too many air pockets, or a loose fit; take your hair into account as well. The first Dome Perignon I purchased was a large, as I had about 4 inches of hair at the time and the fit was good. However, after cutting off those four inches, it became too baggy and stopped doing it's job so I purchased another in a medium. Other than that, a truly excellent product!
I have pretty short hair, and my Dome Perignon produces a noticeable amount of static. It doesn't bother me because I can't really mess my hair up, but I am sure it would be frustrating with longer hair.
This is the best cap you can get without a high altitude prescription. I have owned the first of my two of this cap for over 7 years. It has seen me climb Mt. Hood, gotten me through two Alaskan winters and survived more abusive washings than I can count. (And it looks the same way it did the day I bought it) The earflaps are great and you can fold them up for a warm but slick look. The material is very warm but highly breathable, with no irritation to the skin. This is my favorite article of clothing other than my girlfriends undergarments. You will NOT be disappointed with your purchase.
Great windstopper with full ear protection. Light enough to carry in a day pack year round especially if you travel above timberline a lot. Durable & nice/different color choices. Almost too warm (this is a good thing).
I recently purchased this hat to wear in Chicago's Soldier Field, where the wind is blistery. This is the best hat I have ever owned. I have sever other beanies that are made of knitted wool, stocking-hat-type material, and this hat outperforms them all. The windproof material that goes over the ears works perfectly. I would highly recommend for this for anyone that wants a hat with superior ear protection in very cold weather.
very solid MH construction, but OMG the fit - unless you have an extremely elongated cranium (like maybe Indiana Jones' crystal skull) there'll be room left at the crown of your head to store a 16 oz nalgene bottle - i kid you not, if it we're red, I'd have sewn a white puff ball on top and used it as Christmas party attire this season... since it wasn't i returned it for refund. If your head is anywhere near normal shape this is not for you. (they should've named it the Spire or the Cone, but certainly not Dome)
This hat is amazing. Not itchy, so light it feels like you aren't wearing a hat, warmer than a tin can in the desert and it covers my ears. Easily the best winter hat I have owned. Highly recommended.
The problem I have with most hats is that when i shrug my shoulders or move my head extensively in one direction or the other, the hat will tend to slip up on my head. This of course leads to a plethera of problems which ultimately end up with me having to readjust my goggles. Simply said, this hat fits my larger than average head, without creating the whole above mentioned goggle issue. Furthermore, it is designed to cover the ears and the lower neck much better than your average beanie. Highly recommenced for the large headed outdoors man, who is looking for that hard to find fit in a beanie.
This hat was purchased to use when climbing. I did the Casual Route on the Diamond, Longs Peak, and this hat was perfect. It kept me warm even when sweating during my leads. Its wicking ability was high and it dried out fast when hanging on belay. During the hike in and out, it performed just as well. It has a good look to boot and the comfort and feel is amazing. If your in the market for a quality hat with function and style- this is for you!
A solid windproof fleece beanie from MH. Great for skiing and general winter use. The windstopper membrane does slightly reduce the ability to hear, but not bad. While the back of the beanie has a stretch panel to keep it snug and keep the drafts out, it does have a tendency to ride up when you tilt your head back. Also, it has a pointy top, which makes you look like a cone head. Overall great, but I ended up going with the OR Sonic Beanie instead (better fit under a helmet, no windstopper over the ears).
This was my first real backcountry purchase and it performs as good as it looks!!! Great for high winds, pulls down over your ears!! You can still hear good also, some hats cut out sound and that can be a no no when on a hike . You will have a hat head!!! Hate to take it off!!
This beanie really does the job. It kept my head warm from crazy wind for three days on a backpacking trip in Alaska. Beware though, you will have some major hat hair!
This hat was very surprising in all aspects. I went snowboarding a couple days ago and wore it when it snowed 12 inches in a day. No moisture ever came in through the top, but my head didn't get incredibly sweaty either. very comfortable and the shape allowed for my ears to get covered entirely. It was 14 degrees and I stayed very warm
Everything you would want for a cold weather hat -- on the slopes or on the streets of downtown Salt Lake City - or any northern city in December (or August, as the case may be). It covers the ears Very Well, and it is super snuggly with fleece. It is NOT a maverick hat, I highly recommend it. I might add, I don't think this hat offers a super feminine look, but it is WARM. Function over fashion here.
This hat has a great fit and maintains its warmth and windproof nature even while being active. This is a great hat for hiking, walking, shoveling, walking the dog in a snowstorm. It does keep the wind out, and in doing so makes it difficult to hear with it on at times, but wouldn't change the rating because of it. Great hat, fairly true to size and keeps you warm
I bought this one because my buddy has one that he loves. I tried his on and instantly had to have one. His fit me perfect in size large so thats what I bought. Well the new hat is just as cool as his but its just a little bit bigger. Fit is still ok but I have this feeling that in the wind it might take off. Im hoping it shrinks after its first laundering.
I bought this for my husband. He says it is very warm for his size-challenged head. The windproof fabric is a big plus over knits that allow the wind to blow right through. It is the 1st hat he has owned that actually pulls down over his ears.
The ear flaps are such a no brainer, I don't know why companies don't think to incorporate this into every cold-weather beanie they make. This sucker is WARM and DRY, ears stay warm, no wind blowing through, stops wind but still breathable, with a nice snug fit. Keeping your head warm makes it a lot easier to warm the rest of the body. Another great call by Mountain Hardwear.
My husband has a huge head & refused to wear a helmet. This is a perfect hat. Warm, fits snugly but not tight and looks good, too. Now if it only came in kevlar...
I ordered this size in a large, and it was too large for me, so I gave it to a friend and ordered another in a medium. I wear a 7 1/4 hat. It is a soft, plush hat, and love the windproof lining. It's my favorite beanie in a blizzard.
This is the best hat I've used in very cold weather. I tried it on a recent ski trip, and really liked it. It was 4F one day and my head stayed warm. It's very comfortable, and seems to be durable like most Mountain Hardwear products. The only thing I didn't like was the cone head effect. Otherwise I'd give it a 5 rating.
The Dome Perignon is a great hat for cold weather backpacking, rock climbing, or any other activity. It keeps your head completely warm, and the Windstopper material over the ears works great. This is by far my favorite winter hat for cold-weather backpacking.
I guess it has to do with the windproof layer (which I haven't put to the test yet), but when you put this hat on it sounds like you are trying to hear with headphones on. Very odd. It's comfy but not sized well. I got a large, and it seems far too big but it is snug around the crown which makes me think that the medium would be too tight. I say, if you need a windproof, cover-your-ears type hat, this might be the one for you.
I think this is actually an excellent product, but the sizes run way too large. I usually have trouble with one size fits all caps being too small for me, but this size large is way too big. In hat sizes, I would guess it is close to an 8!
The dome perignon is a great hat. The temp recently dropped to a good 17 degrees with a nice 10-20 degree wind chill. The hat keeps my head nice and warm. the windstopped really helps when those gusts blow. I highly recommend this hat.
Truth be told, I bought a few of these for gifts but wound up pilfering one for my own during a recent ski trip. Kind of funky, but this hat is really warm and doesn't itch like a wool beanie. Besides being windproof, the roll-up ear covers come in handy when it gets really cold. Oh yea, you can play around and make the hat look like one from Robin Hood.
Great beanie. Super warm. The only drawbacks are that the windstopper feature also stops sound. Well not totally, but it does make it difficult to hear. Also, it is shaped a little conehead like which looks funny and makes it hard to wear under a helmet. But boy is that sucker warm and comfy.
This thing is outstanding for extreme winter conditions... anything less and it's a bit too toasty. The windproofness muffles hearing somewhat, and the material could be a little softer, but it is extremely functional. I'll be saving it for the real extreme stuff.
I LOVE this hat. It keeps my head warm while climbing (but not too warm) and even when my head is sweaty the hat doesn't itch! Also, the thinner piece on the back makes it great for wearing under a helmet. It's totally windproof so those high ridge traverses are nice and toasty. Two thumbs up!
Needed a new skull warmer for the upcoming Utah winter. What I did not expect was needing it August 16. I was fishing at Flaming Gorge on the Utah, Wyoming border. The day started around 40 degrees with rain and fat wet SNOW FLAKES. Perfect hat for the situation I was in. The Gore Wind Stopperliner and the Polartec fill, kept my melon toasty. I am excited at the possibilities of winter use. BUY IT!!
Hands down the best cold weather hat you'll own. very warm, completely windproof. I have 2 back ups for when mine dies, although, after 3 years, it's still good as new.
Very nice hat! Warm and comfortable, but had no problem with it being like a cone on top as some reviewers have stated. I just pushed it down on top and it's fine. Great keeping the ears warm no matter how cold. Does run big, I wear a large and ordered medium, it fits just right. The hat is stylish too and I've gotten compliments while wearing it and questions about where I got the hat...
Above the arctic circle, Prudhoe Bay, AK. Winds in excess of 25 knots with the wind chill well below zero. This hat does what it says, blocks the wind and keeps my head/ears warm.
i ordered based on the mountain hardware size chart.. the hat was too big. my only other complaint: while the hat was on my head, if i rubbed it (for example, while putting on ski goggles, or if i was wearing a hoody with the hood up), it would make a loud noise in my ears (like if you rubbed cardboard next to your ear..)
otherwise, it seemed to be constructed really well. it also seemed VERY warm.. i had to return it because of the mis-fit.
I agree that if you have a small head it might be a little big. The small was a little large on the misses, but both the S & M fit fine for me (depending on how you like the fit). To give a size reference, I wear about a 7 1/8 fitted cap and the small is real snug for those cold nights, and medium is a little more roomy fit. This kept my head warm down to about 0 last winter, and the windproofing is awesome. It does have a bit of tip on the top in the design on the top of head, but you can't beat the warmth and fit so it isn't a fashion beanie.
Bought it in a retail shop. I tried on several hats and this one was the best fit. Besides, this beanie has potential. Make sure it fits to your head so it can do its job to protect you from wind and maintain continuous body heat [key. I mountain bike commute 10 miles to work around sunset and come home after midnight. Needed a hat that can keep my head and ears warm. This is it! Only one thing I miss is a razor from front that could shield off car head lights. But this thing is bike specific, the hat is perfect as is. I use my army logo Levis baseball hat on the top of this beanie. Bottom line: There are some products so good that I will buy over and over again. Just like the Selle Italia Flight bike seat or for instance this Mountain Hardwear beanie.
I'm a UPS driver and can't stand our issued beanies cuz they make my head itch. This beanie kept me warn and never made my head itch after wearing it for twelve hours plus! Very confortable, thanks.....
I'm a pretty big beanie fan. I have a bunch of the knit style that you find from companies like Coal and the like. They look great, but I kept having trouble with the bottom of my ears getting cold and whatnot, and they didn't quite do the job when the temperature really dropped or the wind was blowing.
I picked up this beanie and I've been amazed at how warm it is. I've never worn anything like it. It insulates super well and the windproof factor only adds to that. The cut of the beanie makes it so it covers your whole ear.
I have a fairly large head, I wear a size 7 1/2 fitted baseball cap (New Era) and I got the Size Large Dom Perignon. It fits a bit looser than I'm used to with my knit beanies, but the fit is still right. I can pull it all the way down and it will come to just above my eyebrows and the curve down to completely cover my ears.
No beanie out there is as warm as the Dom Peringnon
I have used it for everything. The Windstopper really makes a difference when the wind is howling and it keeps your head super warm in the cold. It doesn't fit under a helmet too well. I have had this through tons of situations and its the one I always grab among my other 5 hats.
This hat is great. I had a NorthFace fleece hat that I always wore prior to this, but this is so much warmer. I love the fact that it's windproof, and even more importantly, that it covers all of my ears!
This is a great hat. Provides great warmth and wind protection The only downside is that it makes it a bit hard to hear because of the windstopper fabric
The best most functional beanie I have owned. The addition of the windstopper keeps you warm without the bulk.. Even in high wind I have never had issues with ears getting cold. The contoured fit completely covers your ears while not getting down in your face like other "straight cut" hats. The hat is put together in a way that is very form fitting. You don't have the random points or "horns" it fits so well I sometimes forgot I had it on.
It is nice hat. It fits down over the ears and back of the neck without coming down over the eyes or otherwise having anything annoying about its function. I immediately blacked out the logo on the forehead with a Sharpie marker. It is huge and bright and will look like a billboard on your forehead. I am already a walking billboard for Mountain Hardwear, but I don't want to be their literal billboard. It would be nice if they just stitched one of their bolts up on the side fleece of the hat. That would be cool and subtle. I immediately get hot wearing this hat, but the weather here is too warm to really put it to the test. I can tell it will be warm, maybe too warm, but we will see when the snow flies again. The construction is good. It would be a perfect hat if they trimmed the excess material that gives it a pointy shape so it was just a sleek head hugging hat.
In Minnesota the winters are cold and windy. After purchasing this hat, I tested it out at -20 deg F (-40 deg F wind chill). My ears stayed warm, much warmer than any other winter hat I've owned. Windstopper lining around the ears is outstanding. The Dome Perigon is definitely a 5 star winter hat. Because the hat has windstopper it may be a bit warm for many folks at 32 deg.
At first, I thought how much better can this Beanie be for the increase in cost over other hats? It was worth the cost. It is the lightest, and warmest hat I own. Almost no air gets through the hat. And on the coldest days, I my head is warm.
All the other reviewers already said it. Just wanted to reinforce the rave reviews. Very comfortable, feels nice and warm on my long runs (cannot actually wear for too long, since it is SO warm). And looks great too. I bought a 2nd hat in a different color.
just got back from Colorado and loved my warm Mountain Hardwear ski hat. this is my second hat (dome perignon) that i purchased. it really keeps out the whipping winds in the ski lift. the first hat got stretched out by a pumpkin head friend who showed up to ski without a hat!
I have a normal size head a small is plenty big. Got a large for my friend, but it was way too big. Blocks wind great and insulates well. Will even block out snow and fits under a helmet nicely.
This is an excellant hat. The product kept my head warm during 30 mph wind with 20 degrees. It provides warmth without causing the ole melon to sweat. The flaps go over the ear nicely. The beanie seems to run a little small. If you are shooting for cool points this product is not for you - do to the fact that it shapes like Smurf hair while on your head. If your outside in the cold and that is your cool then this hat is for you.
