how would this jacket be in comparson to a down filled jacket

how would this jacket be in comparson to a down filled jacket for warmth? I'm not familiar with this insulater. I like the look of this coat, there isn't a lot of bulk.
Is there a coat you would recommend for winter use? Our tempatures vary 5 to -17 degrees

Kristine. This jacket is made with 120g Primaloft. Primaloft is used as a synthetic insulation throughout the industry in outerwear and sleeping bags by many manufacturers. The 'bulk' you mention is due to the 120g primalofts thickness. If you had the same amount of down and the same amount of primaloft the warmth would be similar but the weight would be different. Down is warmer for its weight than other synthetic insulations like primaloft. Combined with a shell and/or mid and base layers this jacket could be used in very cold temperatures. I have used it as an belay coat climbing and have skied with it on cold days. I hope this info helps!

During activities such as skiing, hiking, climbing or whatever your little buddy is into, this down jacket when paired with a good base layer and midlayer, will perform just fine in those temps. Proper layering is all about working smarter, not harder.
