Mountain Hardwear Canyon Pant - Men's

In canyons, dry paths aren't necessarily the only thing you have to travel on. The Mountain Hardwear Canyon Pant is equally happy slogging through water, sliding down sandstone and just plain walking. Mesh drain panels in the pockets make sure you aren't taking any of the water with you, while the gusseted crotch and articulated knees maximize your freedom of movement. Canyon Cloth wicks moisture away from your skin, so if you manage to stay dry for a while you won't drown in sweat.

Bottom Line: Get through the water in the Mountain Hardwear Canyon Pants.

Great climbing pants

By:

These are great for climbing. I wear them to climb indoors and they don't restrict your movement at all. I wear a size 32 waist and the Mediums fit great.

Great Pants

By:
March 29, 2007

I have been hiking and rock climbing in these pants several times. They allow total freedom of movement and are very lightweight. Somehow they still manage to be warm in the cold and cool in the heat. The hidden drawcord feature at the ankle is really cool/ handy. If you are a 32h32w in waist you will want to get the M instead of the L. I got the large and they're too long/ big in the waist. The Canyon is still my favorite pant though!

Judging from the sizing chart you will need a Mens medium with a tall (long) inseam length. It looks to me the only color they have in stock is Espresso, M/Long - Hope this helps...

These pants are made with what we call 'Canyon Cloth' which is essentially a synthetic lightweight cotton canvas that is pretty soft to the touch. If you want even more specific details, Canyon Cloth is a 100% nylon twill with a 70Dx160Dx90 thread count. Also, the fabric is treated with a molecular moisture process that allows moisture in the vapor phase to escape before it becomes sweat. It also has a UPF of 50 and that is after 30 washings. The fabric weighs 3.3oz./sq.yd. Also, Pat mentioned they were stretchy... the fabric has a little give but they are not stretchy. We have other pants like the Talus Pant that are really stretchy. Good Luck!

Kinda thin, kinda stretchy. Not soft like silk, but soft for sure. The fabric texture is like that of perhaps, the non-sticky side of sports tape or that of light schoeller fabric, maybe...

Not the pants I was looking for - but still mostly ok

By:

I was really looking for a line of pants made by Mtn Hardwear that is like heavy canvas. These are made like a thin parachute. BUT- they still performed pretty well and looked pretty good, and I expect I will keep them. I'm still looking for the others though...

Wash & Wear

By:
June 14, 2005

I just returned from the banks of the Amazon, where I spent a week building a church for a local village, with two pair of Canyon pants. There is 12 hours of daylight, lots of heat, humidity, dirt and insects everywhere. Then the sun goes down and the mosquitoes rule with a vengeance. Soaked thru all day with sweat then jump in the river to wash wearing everything but the boots. Two hours later you are dry and as clean as the river will allow. They keep the sun off, the chiggers from climbing up the bottoms, the piranha from biting and the mosquitoes don't get thru. Life is good.

These pants are very nice! I love the diaginal back pockets. They hold all of my pocket gear in place. The internal belt is awesome for avoiding my pack, but it only shows in the front so I can't put my camara clip on my waist. They are very water resistant and fast drying after a wash. Comfy too.

Canyon Killer

By:
August 11, 2009

I've had these pants for about a year now, and they are definitely my favorite hiking/climbing pants. They don't weigh much, so they make their way into my backpack pretty often in case cool weather blows in. The built in belt is definitely handy and means there's one less thing I might forget on my next trip.
While these pants are nice and lightweight, they have taken a beating and still look almost new. They are typical MH quality, and I have a feeling they'll last me a while. One last note - the back pockets are not at your typical "jean" location. They're lower and moved out towards the hips. It makes sitting on your wallet feel a little funny, but it also make them WAY more accessible if you're wearing a backpack or climbing harness.

These Pants are awesome

By:
September 23, 2009

I am now on my 3rd pair of Mountain Hardware's Canyon pants. I have worn them camping, hiking, biking and even to the coffee shop. They are without a doubt the most versatile and comfortable pants I own. They are roomy, with huge pockets front and back, durable, fast drying, and extremely comfortable. I am 6'4 and have the XL and they run just a tad long, which I appreciate. The waist sizing is accurate. The colors are true to their names.

All In all I cant say enough good things about these pants.

Mountain Hardwear comes through again

By:
September 1, 2009

I bought this pair to replace a pair of MTH Convertible Pack pants. I tore the pack pants on a some slickrock during a canyoneering trip. Prior to this purchase I called MTH to ask about a warranty. The woman I talked to told me that if MTH still made the same pants they would have replaced them. Anyways I got these and took them on a long backcountry hike in the Utah desert. Lots of scrambling, hiking through scrub and general clothing destroying activities. The pants were fine. They breathe well in 100+ temps. They took all the scrambling I could manage in stride. Not even the cactus I fell on managed to tear them. Sizing is spot on. I am XL, according to MTH, 6 ft. 215 lbs. size 38 waist. The pants dont restrict my movement.

As always, MTH came up with another great product.

Awesome

By:
May 12, 2008

These pants work great for everything that I need them for. They are actually quite comfortable and freedom permitting, so they don't get in the way while moving around. I appreciate the built-in belt; minimal but helpful. It doesn't get in the way of a pack belt and things like that. These pants also have the nice feature of the bungee style drawcords at the ankles, so that you can roll uo the pant legs and keep them out of the way during rock climbing, or a river crossing. Also very breathable, and as many have said, quick drying. Awesome pants!

A Stroke of Genius.

By:
August 5, 2009

Whether I'm hiking or doing some bouldering, these pants offer amazing flexibility. They're about as soft and lightweight as a pair of hiking pants can be, and pretty tough from what I've seen. A little prone to wrinkling, but the value is amazing.

What More Could You Ask For in a Pair of Hiking Pants?

By:
January 12, 2009

Quite honestly, I'm not sure the folks at Mountain Hardwear could have devised a better design for a pair of hiking pants than what the canyon pants deliver. First and most importantly, these pants are very comfortable to wear. They are constructed of nylon (basically the same type as a pair of swim trunks)which makes them very lightweight and packable. Yet Mountain Hardwear did not compromise any durability in the stitching or materials whatsoever, as these have proven to be a tough pair of pants. This also makes them great when it comes to moisture, as they will wick away much of it away from your skin and also repel decent amounts of precipitation falling from the skies. Even when saturated, mine dried out in about 10 to 15 minutes. The elastic ankle cuffs make them nice to adjust the length to some degree as well. As far as the fit goes, I normally wear between a 34 and 36 and am about 5'8" tall and the large regulars worked perfectly for me. I have used these pants on several lenghty hiking trips and look foward to wearing them on upcoming backpacking adventures. The canyon pants blow all other hiking pants out of the water, no questions asked!

Pants too long

By:
August 20, 2007

These pants were a great fabric and design but the legs were a couple of inches too long. I think these were a 32" and my husband wears a 30". Because of the drawstring bottom they need to be the correct length for the wearer - wouldn't work very well rolling the bottoms up. So unfortunately had to return them.

Best pants I have

By:
July 16, 2009

I live in Sacramento and if you don't know, summer in central California is hot. These pants are as close to shorts as possible in regulating heat. The fit is good for an athletic build, well maybe a stocky build with cyclist legs (more of the velodrome build, not tour de France build). Two things: I wish they came in black and I can't figure out how to keep the bottoms from being wrinkled. Definitely not dressy, but for the 90% of how I live me life, they work great.

Extremely light, good fit and functional features (easy access to all 4 angled-top pockets with pack on, drawsting cuffs). Held up to abusive treatment sliding and shimmying down talus slope passes in the Sierras during a 16day backcountry hike. Amazed to only have a few stitches to repair and they've held up to another ~200 miles of hiking since. Much lighter than many other pants.

Kudos to Mountain Hardwear on a great pair of pants. The fit is great for average builds and the quality appears to be just what I'd expect. They are a lighter material than my North Face Paramount convertible pants so time will tell how they hold up. I also have been wearing the Paramounts year round hiking in middle Tennessee but will try the Canyons on into fall and winter. They're so comfortable I wear them around town as well.

Not waterproof

By:
June 7, 2009

Used these for a Grand Canyon trip, and noticed during water refills that these pants are not waterproof at all, contrary to what was indicated in the promotional material included with the pants.

Otherwise they worked really, really well - They fit, wick sweat fast, there was no chafing or whatever and they held up against all rocks and underbrush. As long as you do not directly sit on a cactus (I brushed some), they will protect your legs. And they did not smell even after 7 days in the backcountry - well, at least not too bad.

Material is not good for summer since you tend to sweat a lot in a really hot summer like in India where humidity is hight. Where is the breathability?

The canyon cloth is great stuff. So light and comfy but still very durable. The integrated belt works great, and when it's hot as balls you can roll up the legs and they stay put thanks to the cinch up ankles. These pants are at home in the water, drain ports in the pockets and quick drying nylon mean that you dry off in a matter of minutes, not hours. I am six foot tall and weigh 160 and a medium fits me perfect.
