Mountain Hardwear Absolute Zero Overboot

Mountain Hardwear Absolute Zero Overboots keep your feet warm when you're mountaineering at high altitudes in ranges like Alaska or the Himalayas. If the altitude is too high and the weather is too cold for your boots to keep your feet warm by them selves, turn to these full-coverage gaiters. Insulated with removable closed-cell foam, the Absolute Zero Overboots keep your feet warm so you come home with all of your toes.

Bottom Line: When you reach the coldest environments on earth, count on the Mountain Hardwear Absolute Zero overboots to keep your feet warm.

Write your question here...I'm looking for an overboot for snow camping: something to go over my down tent booties for walking around camp in the snow after a day of snowshoeing or skiing, cooking, etc. What would be the appropriate overboot?

This overboot would work actually very well. If you intend to ONLY use them over your tent booties you'll want to size down a bit. The sizing chart is dead-on but it is meant for sizing over leather or double plastic boots. You aren't going to have to worry about them feeling sloppy, after sizing down, because there is an elastic strap/buckle inside to snug your foot down in place.
Hope that helps.

Here's a question, hopefully for Jon Webb.
I just picked up a pair of these as we have some extreme conditions headed our way and my feet tend to run just a little cold. When I took them out of the plastic I noticed that they cover the entire boot, including the tread. Are you meant to cut out the bottom to custom fit them to you boots?
Thanks in advance!

Steve. They are designed to cover the ENTIRE boot including the boot tread and so can only be used in conjunction with strap-on crampons and or snowshoes. There are folks who have removed some of the closed cell foam in the gaiters themselves to make them compatible with a partial-clip/strap-on crampon but I have not tried it myself. In extremely cold environments it is really important to cover the entire boot including the boot sole especially when there is a piece of metal strapped on to your foot! I hope this helps and they work out for you. Good luck...

Except the tread. They'd be pretty damn useless if you couldn't walk on them.

uh...really not what they're meant for. these bad boys are basically just (huge, warm) mittens for your feet. you can find (much thinner) overboots for nordic boots, though backcountry doesn't carry any. perhaps try a specialty ski shop?-----------------------Just to add to the above answer... these are designed for high altitude mountaineering to wear over your climbing boots. Definitely not for cross country skiing. Thanks!

yes---------------To clarify, that means that they don't cover the bottom of your boot. The crampons can still poke out from underneath.----------------They are compatible with STRAP-ON crampons... just to clarify.so any buyer is clear - these overboots completely cover the boot, including the sole. so, you can't just walk around in them without crampons or snowshoes, or the bottoms will get torn apart. i have used them with step-in crampons, but you should test this out and perhaps remove some of the closed-cell foam at the heel to ensure they work.
