Montrail made the Whidbey Men's Shoes with turned-out seams to eliminate hot spots and thermo-moldable linings for a precise fit and tailored comfort. Wear these leather slip-on shoes when you spend the day kicking back in camp, hanging out with friends, or slacklining in Camp 4. Slip your feet out of the Whidbey Shoes, have a go at the line, and slip them back on to keep your feet comfy as your friends take their turns.
Bottom Line: The Montrail Whidbey Shoes—pure casual comfort for camp.
I ordered these shoes based on looks alone and price. I made the right choice. Out of the box they felt wrong on my feet and tight, but after about three days of regular wear, they fit perfectly. I've had several compliments about the "fresh" look of these shoes. For the price, you can't go wrong, just give them a chance.
Wanted SO badly to like the shoes, but they have this medial 'cushion' thing on the inside of each shoe that really, really makes them uncomfortable. I wore mine in the house, up one flight of stairs and had to take them off. I love the Montrail Hurricane Ridge running shoes, so was surprised and disappointed to have to return the Montrail Whidbey shoes. Try on in a store before ordering so this doesn't happen to you.
You have to customize the inserts per the instructions that come with them. You have to heat the insoles in an oven and then replace them in the shoe and immediately put them on until the thermo-adjustable inserts mold to the shape of your foot. They're practically unwearable until you adjust them per the manufacturer's instructions.
Very good shoes but not perfect. Good: looks (my 14 year old daughter even thinks they look cool on me, which is rare praise); sole (this may sound a little strange, but not only are they grippy, but they're super stable -- definitely a shoe made by a good boot company); finish (cool sort of roughout); fit (thermoformable insole -- really high-end detail for a relatively inexpensive shoe!).
Weak spots: because it laces down farther than an oxford but shorter than a tennis shoe, it flexes right behind the toes, which was uncomfortable for me until they broke in a little. And the tongue, which is thin, keeps shifting off-center and kind of crumpling up; I wish they had a fixed tongue. So: very good, not perfect, but I'll still recommend them.
These shoes have a very pronounced ridge supporting the arch of your foot. I have relatively low arches, so usually this sort of thing is a blessing and a curse: they offer good support, but hurt my feet in the process. These shoes, however, have found a happy medium. They are very supportive, but break-in to fit the specific shape of your foot. In fact, the break-in process is shortened by the fact that you can remove the insole and put it in the oven for a few minutes. You then put the insole back in and stand in the shoes so that they mold to the shape of your foot. I found this helped the break-in quite a bit, but the the insole has still taken a few weeks of occasional wear to mold to the shape of my foot. Now they're supportive and comfortable. Be patient, and buy them from somewhere with a good return policy.
I agree with "anonymous 1" and what was said. I love the way they look, and because they are Montrail, was sure they'd be comfortable. I was wrong about that. They have improved with age, but still need some work. They hurt my feet so much when I first got them that I would wear them for short periods of time to break them in. I can understand why the price has been cut. I'm sure they have been discontinued.
I agree with the other reviewers; the Whidbey is a good looking casual shoe. On the other hand, I have found it to be a very comfortable shoe. I was able to wear it "straight out of the box" without any break-in time required. I wear 1/2 size smaller in this shoe than I typically wear.
I loved the look of the shoes. Can hang in the wintertime, it seems, with the beefy sole, but the leather might be a little supple. One would have to protect the leather if exposed to snowy or wet conditions often, I feel. The insole for the shoe is as good as it gets. Might bother some, but most will appreciate its support. I would have kept the shoe; however, I had a tear were the tongue of the shoe was stitched. That concerned me. I suspect it happens a lot, as the stick is not very solid. Moving on to something else.
