i run trail as a profession. this is my favorite shoe. it's not for everyone, and i couldn't have run in it years ago. it's light, which means it's not very protective. many of the montrail shoes have a protection plate. but that is heavy. so there isn't one in the steak. i like that because i feel the trail more. but it can mean if you run long your feet will feel a bit more beat up. the light and breathable upper drains water well and has plenty of protection for me. however i would not suggest this shoe for someone who runs super rugged trails often. go with a continental divide or hardrock for that. this shoe is so light i often run road with it too. i find the tread is great. but if you know you are going to deal with miles of muddy trail i would pick something with a bit more aggressive tread pattern. i would say the durability of the upper on this shoe is good, not great. but the comfort makes up for it. i simply love the way this shoe feels!

oh yeah and it's a neutral shoe with no posting.

These things fall apart too fast, the mesh deteriorates quickly. The knobbies fall off the bottom quickly too, making the sole not worthy of tough trails.

Just picked up three pair as these are the best lightweight trail runners I have found. Use them for ultralight packin' shoe. Unbeatable for summer hikes, well made, order 1/2 size up though!

Great heel cushioning and roomy toe box for me, which I don't have a wide foot. The Lacing system is different then most shoes as it focuses anchoring to the middle of the foot so they feel different but good.

I've been trailrunning for over 6 years and have worn, literally, just about every shoe out there. This is, by far, the best overall trailrunning shoe I've ever worn. It offers nearly all the support of the Hardrock, yet it is light and flexible. Just a fantastic shoe!

Montrail is a deservedly legendary trail shoe company, but it seemed headed downhill with its purchase by Columbia--it was harder to reach customer service, and almost every shoe I got from them (Odyssey, Hurricane, Namche) in recent years had a manufacturing defect.

The Streak is a great return to form: classic Montrail fit, with a snug, sculpted heel cup and huge, roomy toebox. The body has a comfy, soft and very breathable mesh. What's special about these shoes is their light, agile feel. They have a very minimal sole, just beefy enough to protect you from rocks but thin enough that you can feel the terrain. They ride low to encourage stability through good foot placement, rather than lots of extra padding and structure. Overall, they combine a fast, sprightly feel with enough toughness to handle three hour trail runs just fine.

For more brutal terrain, you might want to look into a beefier shoe like the Vitesse, for dirt and grass a lugged fell running-type shoe like the Highlander, and for wet conditions something in goretex. But as a go-to, just-enough-to-do-the-job minimalist trail shoe, the Streak and the similarly fast n light La Sportiva Fireblade are the ones to beat.

I have tried about every brand on trail running (e.g. Vasque, La Sportiva, Nike, New Balance, Pearl Izumi) and they all had one thing in common - the midsoles were inexplicably hard to the point where my knees would ache during runs. I finally started wearing road shoes (Brooks Radius 7) as my trail shoes for their soft cushioning. However, the road shoe's outsole didn't do much in the mud and steep slopes. I bought a pair of the Montrail Streak last month and after only 10 miles wore them in a trail marathon - my knees never felt better after that long of a run. The Streak uses a soft, almost squishy, midsole that is perfect for me - providing far more effective cushioning than much heavier shoes.

The heal and mid-foot fit snug (ideally) and along with the flexible sole made running over rocky and tricky areas fun. The forefoot is a little wider than I thought I liked but I discovered that the fit of the heal and midfoot gave me all the control I needed so I didn't have to crank the laces tight on the toes. Sizing: I wear 10.5 in Nike, La Sportiva, Pearl Izumi, and even the Mountrail Odyssey but size 10.0 fit me in the Streak. It is a 44 euro. Thus I would say if in the middle go smaller - much like Brooks actually.

The outsole traction was good, not as good as La Sportiva on wet rocks but the flexibility and control of the Streak made up for it. Worked well in mud. The shoe drains and dries very fast. They are very light and felt nimble as they are not burdened with a bunch of stability features. Rock protection seemed to work because I never noticed it.

If I could run farther, I would choose these for ultras also. They are gold for the neutral runner.

For frame of reference, I am 170#, 5'10ish, have a neutral stride, and run exclusively on gravel and trails.

Just received them, put them on and 1st thing I noticed, seemed snug. I think every shoe I have is 13 and this 13 felt snug. Not enough to send back though. I saw a few comments about sizing seeming the other way.
Also noticed the arch, more so than any other shoe I have.
Very lightweight. You can actually see light coming through the mesh parts if you hold it up to the light.
Will write more after a week or two of runs. Looking forward to trying them out.

comfortable and light. not a real tight fit but I have narrow feet. I ordered the size 10 that i usually wear and they were perfect. If you are doing a lot of running they may not last for more then a year but most don’t.

The weight of these shoes was appealing enough to purchase them. Unfortunately, they have a seam in the instep that completely mutilated my feet after only 4 miles. I have very high arches and have tried these shoes with both custom orthotics as well as Montrail moldable inserts and had the same problems. After only 4 miles the instep seam had caused a large enought blister to soak blood through the shoe. I have given these shoes 6 tries with the same result each time (while fully healing between each try).

I've tried numerous running shoes for both the road and the trail. These have to be the best I've found so far. They have great support in both the heel and the arch. And they seem extremely stable even on uneven ground. They don't heat up; and if they get wet; they drain fast and stay about the same weight. Only complaint is the laces. Double knot them, or you'll be stopping to retie them. I'm 6' 210#, and their holding up very well...

I have loyally used and loved the Hurricane ridge model but wanted a change so I bought these. Straight from the box and after a 25K trail run they are awesome! The sizing is great, grip is fantastic for a multi- surface run. I will recommend these to anyone who runs in a hot climate and needs a shoe that really breathes.

I've run up trails and on the road with these - they do both really well. I bought my first pair a about 5 weeks ago and have run up about 40 miles of trail and 90+ miles of road (took a break over Xmas).

The bottom line is they work great - felt a little snug in the mid foot at first - but they provide nice support on the arch / mid foot / low ankle. The toe box opens up nice and they stay snug on the heel. Even descents on a 15%+ gradient felt good. The snug mid foot / heel fit kept me in the shoe and not sliding forward.

Buy some now - before I buy out all their stock.

This is a great trail shoe. I had moved away from Montrail to try some other options that were lighter and less bulky (after running the Vitesse for about 2 years). This shoe brought me back to the Montrail fold with it's nimble performance in the technical downhills and classic Montrail bomber construction. Looking forward to taking them out for their first 50m this weekend. I bought a half size smaller than I have previously with Montrail, don't know if this is a new trend for Montrail or just a little glitch with this shoe. Would be curious if others have noticed anything in their fit? More Miles!
++ Ran a 50m in them this past weekend, they were terrific! Best shoe I have used for ultra races. Great foot protection in rocky terrain in such a light shoe. My feet felt fine, better than after any other race I've done. I have been happy with shoes only to toss them after going big distances before, these are even higher in my book with a good distance trial.

I purchased this shoe to use on both trails and roads, and it has met my expectations. The shoe is light and moderately flexible with minimum cushioning allowing more natural foot movement and a better feel of the trail, but provides better protection on rough trails than a comparable weight road shoe. I typically prefer Montrails because of their great heel fit and roomy toe box - they remain secure with no heel movement without having to cinch them down and have plenty of room for unrestricted toe movement - and the Streak is exceptional in both categories. I took them on a 15 mile run right out of the box and they were exceptionally comfortable from beginning to end.

I have worn the Hardrock shoes for ten 100 mile runs but this summer I tried the Streak and fell in love all over again. I just did a 50-mile run in them and my feet were no more sore then they would have been in the Hadrock's so I think I may use them in my next 100 miler. They are light, responsive, they protect fairly well, but they won't last very long. I'm 5'8" 165 and I'm going through them every 200 miles, but it's worth it, they provide a great ride. As for sizing; go with the same as the Hardrock or similar shoe. If you're a size 11 then get an 11 in the Streak.

Shoes are a big deal for me. I can be in them for hours and even days. I got these babies as a SAC deal, mainly because they were only 35 bucks. They were worth more. I have had no issues whatsoever. No blisters, no slipping, no banging my toes on the end of the shoe...nada. I ran a half marathon in them on Jan. 17th (all pavement) and once again no problems. My wife was running in her fancy Nike running shoes and had several blisters. Get a pair...now!

Had to send these back as I felt the arch too much for my feet. I can see why people love them though. They are very light and seemed to have good support and cushion. They just didn't work for me. I gave them four stars because this could be a fantastic shoe for the right foot.

awesome trail shoes for the price, i've taken these puppies on a few Hash runs and they stood up to the lake mud and the hills around Kabul, couldn't be happier! Sturdy considering i'm in the clydesdale class of runners at 195lbs but still have the support i need

I got a pair of these to go with my Montrail Hurricane Ridge XCR's. The XCR's are Gore Tex and perfect for the wet weather here in the Pacific NW. (I'm on my second pair in as many years). Like the Hurricane's the Streak felt perfect right out of the box, no break in time was necessary. I went right out and did 6-miles with no complaints. They are a very light shoe and with the mesh sides, I agree with ironpaw, they are a perfect shoe for hot days. The next best thing to barefoot, I am a big fan of Montrail. Once I found the size that works for me, I grabbed another pair. When it is time to retire my well-worn faves I've got a replacement in reserve. Great company, great shoe.

I was a bit suspicious at first. When I think of running shoes I think of Adidas, Asics, etc. not hiking shoe companies with their heavy bulky stiff shoes (even if I am going going off road). These are some of the best trail shoes I have had. Light, comfy stable, I can't think of a serious complaint. I am just dropping a note while I am here picking up my second pair.

This is a comfortable street shoe and probably decent on trails, but for someone who is used to running in neutral cushion light-weight trainers this feels like a tank. I will use it on really tough trail runs and probably more in cold weather (although it has lots of mesh). Sort of a tweaner shoe that isn't particular great at anything, but not at all uncomfortable. For running fast and light I wouldn't recommend but for a good trail, lightweight hiker I think it fits the bill.

Easily the best running shoe I have ever owned. These things rip. I have always had some on and off shin splints and have developed a some what flat footed stride as a result. These things pretty much cleared that all up in about a week or two. The heel cup is awesome and totally gives way more support then you might think was possible for such a light shoe. I will definitely buy more of these guys.

These shoes do not hold up to the normal punishment of trail running. The lace loop closest to the toe broke after about 150 miles, I think the material of the laces is stronger than the lace loop; material to material lacing is a failure point in a lot of trail running shoes. Taking into consideration I run a lot of hard based Utah rock/gravel, I still feel the tread wore out way too quick.

These are quite nice. The heal has a ton of cushion and they feel great on the old dogs (feet). I do not recommend using these in the Desert where there is a lot of sand because the sand easily slips through the mesh and builds up in the shoes. Made my feet a little raw when that happened. Other than that I love these bad boys. Light weight with good cushioning. They fit true to size.
