Some people just take their time in the hills more seriously than others. For that crew, Montrail created the Women’s Mountain Masochist Trail Running Shoe. Ironically, a triple-density midsole takes the pain OUT of rough terrain, and the Gryptonite outsole keeps you upright even on the steepest traverses. Montrail built the upper out of lightweight, breathable mesh to keep your foot from sweltering in under the scorching summer sun.
This is my second pair of Montrails. They are awesome. Ran my first 18 gnarly trail race this past weekend, and I performed well - thanks, in part, to the awesome shoes - only a little breaking in; traction was great.
My only request is a little bigger toe box (I did get some toe blisters), but, on the other hand- I have narrow feet, and I love the way these shoes feel snug - but not too snug. Definitely going to order again soon!
Went for my first run in these today...I think I love them! (Time will tell.) Question - would you use these on dirt roads, as well? If not, is there a Montrail runner that is more appropriate for less knarly surfaces?
I own the masocshist's as well as the montrail streaks and for the non-technical stuff I prefer the streaks. The Masochist are a little bit stiffer and a little bit narrower than the Streaks but they weigh the same. If you're looking for a similar fit but a little more comfort then go with the Streaks, you won't be disiappointed.
I've loved these shoes from day 1 and have put a lot of trail miles on them in the last 20 days and still love them. They fit my narrow feet well and are a good mix of cushion, flexibility, and stiffness - all while being fairly light. I also LOVE that they don't have a raised heel (which for me alway results in forefoot pain). That's the function input, from a fashion standpoint...i also really appreciate that the women's color scheme is pretty muted and not lavender and pink!
Streaks have a bit more volume in the toe box but are built on a similar last and with the same outsole. The Masochist does have a little medial post as well. The overall volume of the Masochist is lower but the fit is greatly improved. I have duck feet myself... wide and flat with a narrow heel. I love the fit of the Masochist and felt the Streak to be a little voluminous for my particular foot. Hope this helps!
I have the Masochist and the Streaks. The Masochist has a narrower toe box. My feet are pretty narrow so the Masochist works for me but I can immediately tell I have more room when I put on the Streaks.
The footprint of this shoe is pretty narrow, especially on the heel. Not enough lateral stability for me on rugged trails. Looks like the tread would be great though.
I got these a couple weeks ago and have only run in them a couple of times, on rocky and hilly technical trails. They are super light and best all cushiony, but not mushy. I have a wide forefoot and high arch, and they fit really well. Plus they don't have a raised heel, which so many others have. I have run in the vitesse for many years, but I didn't like the change in the sizing a few years back, and switched to some other brands.
I was shocked at how light these shoes were considering the beefy tread. This shoe feels very stable on the trail and fast. I am recommending these shoes to my buddies!
