The Montrail Masai is built for comfort over long distances in warm temperatures. Materials are chosen for breathability and light weight with a cushiony feel on rough Sierra trails, hard Bay-area roads or mixed terrain. Montrail updated their lightest, most breathable shoe to fit a variety of foot types so road runners enjoy it training on multiple surfaces and ultra runners use it to trail race. Constructed with plenty of mesh, it allows airflow during sustained activity in warm weather. The reinforced toe cap uses EVA and rubber for durability, and then screen prints it with polyurethane for abrasion resistance. Tongue is padded and stretches for a sock-like fit, and further protection from lace rubs comes from a seamless inner layer in the upper. The lacing eyelets, webbing bands and midfoot support panels are housed independently on the outside to avoid chafing. Toe box is roomy for when feet swell during long runs but the shoe conforms to narrow feet effortlessly by cinching the flexible upper.
Bottom Line: The lightest, most breathable shoe Montrail makes also has the best versatility from road to trail.
I started running in Montrail shoes a year ago and can't find a shoe that I like better. They fit great and wear even better. I plan on running the Nike 26.2 marathon the end of October in these fantastic shoes!!
I own 4 pairs of these shoes. They're absolutely great! I recently visited Disneyland and wore these shoes the whole time. I must have walked miles in them. Very lightweight and when I got them wet on a ride, they dried within the hour. My favorite thing about this shoe is the sock-like fit. Love love love these shoes!
The moment I tried these shoes on I decided to get them. How easy was that! Such a perfect fit for my foot (wide feet).
I wear these shoes running on pavement and on trails in all conditions, even in lava flows! They get eaten up a bit but still look great! Lace them up right and you won't notice you stubbed your toe, they have a handy upturned rubber sole to protect toes.
I wouldn't recommend them for very cold weather because they are so breathable. So much so that dirt goes through the shoe and I find it in my socks around my toes!
For years I've used Saucony for my trail runs because that's the best I could find at the standard big box stores. But then I had the opportunity to try on the Montrail Masai and I was blown away by the difference! It's like discovering that trees have leaves -- they actually make shoes for feet like mine! I have a very high arch and a narrow heel. The Masai provides support in all the places I need it, is really lightweight, and very comfortable. I've been running in them about 5 days a week for the last few weeks, and I love them! I do think they run somewhat small, though, so you might want to try them on before ordering online -- I bought a half size larger than every other brand of shoe I own.
I ordered the Masai running shoe, but mistakenly placed it for the wrong size. After I realized my mistake, the backcountry team quickly allowed for a return and I got a replacement pair in the correct size without delay. I love my shoes and will order here again! I do have a word of caution. Order 1.5 sizes larger than normal. I wear an 8 and had to get a 9.5!
I have a lower arch and a wider foot, and am having some difficulty getting these shoes dialed-in for my particular feet. I have used them at a local nature park with a coarser gravel path and found I wish the soles were a little thicker -like them better on the road. What I really love about these shoes, however, is the mesh. Even when I just walk around indoors, it feels like I have a personal air conditioner attached to each foot. And they are so, so light on your feet.
I usually run in Adidas, and this was my first pair of non-Adidas shoes in a long, long time. After a very quick break-in period, I found the Masai's to be perfectly comfortable. I like running on the road with these more than the trail, though. They're very supportive, but the tread seems more road-happy.
These shoes are perfect for dry weather, warm or cold. Super breathable, super light. My feet don't ever get hot in these and they have a great fit. You MUST try these!
