Super Hot and Great in the MUD

By: Backcountry.com Sponsored Athlete
October 28, 2008

the highlander is one of my favorite shoes. it's a bit narrower than other montrails. it's designed after the "fell running" shoes they use in the UK. they run straight up the mtns and don't bother with trails. so the tread is super aggressive. i love it. it's got a bunch of lugs that grip the dirt better than any other trail shoe i've worn.. but where they excell is the mud. the lugs are built for mud running and they do this hands down better than any shoe on the market today. the upper is protective enough for some rugged terrain and it drains water extremely well. at just 10oz these shoes are light and simple, just the way i like them. i've even raced a 50km trail race in this shoe. it has just enough protection, cushion and comfort for 50km but not sure i'd wear them in a 50 miler. great shoe.

Grip and Run

By:
June 27, 2007

First off, I have the worst feet and they are way too big for my body. I usually feel like I am running with a pair of flippers instead of feet. I have gone through about eight pairs of new shoes in the last two months trying to find the right fit and performance.
The second I put these Montrail's on.. I attained nirvana. The support around the heel and arch is completely secure. The toe box is very roomy, which I have found to be a problem with some other Montrail shoes. The traction is fantastic. These shoes grip your feet and grip the trail.

Great in the mud great on my feet!

By:

These shoes are the best trail running shoes i've had so far. They're narrow so watch out if you have a wider foot but they support the heel and my high arches very well during a long run on uneven ground! They're great looking and fun too. I'm very happy with these and not just for the price. These shoes would be great at any price.

Weirdest, but Coolest Shoes

By:
January 27, 2009

These shoes look so freakin weird with the different colored sides, but I love em. Everyone always comments on their unique appearance. On top of that, they have great traction and support. They are narrower than most shoes, so I wouldn't recommend them if you have wide feet.

Try the Streaks from Montrail. They are not SUPER wide but the upper will accommodate a wide foot well. Good luck!

Highlander is my new favorite!

By:
June 5, 2007

I have been wearing Montrail trail shoes for over 10 years and the Highlander is the perfect shoe for me. I ran the very tough Squaw Peak 50 mile run in them yesterday and had no issues with the shoes.

Good bananas

By:
March 25, 2008

Got these in orange/gray, size 9 (they run 1/2 size small). I'm a novice runner, intent on building up my mileage. First the downside: They are shaped long with a tapered toe box--almost pointy--and are almost 3/4 inch longer than all my other shoes. I have "normal" feet; these might be best for those with banana shaped podia (no offense). They squeak. Upside: I'm keeping them because they're comfortable, supportive, and grip well on trails (a little less comfortable on pavement), they're well-made, the color and design is groovy, and I was tickled to see from the variety of printed quotes inside the box that Montrail really cares about their responsibility to the planet.

i think the shoe simply feels longer because it is a narrow fit. buy whatever size you normally do in a trail running shoe.

perfect for some.

By:
October 2, 2007

These shoes felt great at first. They are light, breathable in heat but still grip. I had tried montrail hardrock-great for stopping foot bruising but i had no foot flexion or feeling. HIghlander have so much ankle support.I think not enough cushioning for roads. They are long and narrow. I couldnt fit my orthotics in them so got injuries in feet when wore them in a race. But it you have good feet, not flat foot like me, they were much sturdier and tougher than I expected.

Love them!

By:
April 23, 2008

These shoes have been great. They felt pretty stiff and not very comfortable at first, but I have worn them a lot and I love them. The sole is great for trail running or even in the snow. The grippers on them are awesome. The super stylish mesh keeps my feet nice and cool too.

Cute shoes, odd fit

By:
August 5, 2008

I made the mistake of ordering these 'cause they're cute, but the fit is odd- very narrow- and these just don't feel good on so I returned them. In fairness, I have tried other Montrails as well and they just don't work for me, too stiff and uncomfortable, so this is probably a personal issue for me with this brand since I know so many who swear by Montrails.
