Montrail Hardrock Mid '09 GTX Hiking Shoe - Men's

The Men’s Hardrock Mid '09 GTX Shoes are lightweight for fast hiking and feature Gore-Tex waterproof inserts to keep your feet dry when you hop through streams or slog through a downpour. The gusseted tongue prevents trail debris from getting in, and a forefoot plate underneath the comfy EVA midsole protects the ball of your foot from stone-bruising. The Hard Rock Mid GTX Shoe also has a midfoot shank for stability and torsional rigidity on uneven terrain. Montrail's Gryptonite rubber outsole has aggressive lugs that hold fast on everything from washed-out mudfests to slick granite scrambles.

Bottom Line: Go for distance and speed.

Montrails, in general, almost always run on the narrow side. So no with really wide feet I would go with Merrell personally, I find them pretty wide and comfortable.

Better than the '08 version of the Hardrock Mid

By:

I just got these after returning the '08 version of the Hardrock Mid. The '08 version began to come apart on the sides from normal trail abrasion after using about 4-5 times on long day hikes. The newer version seems like a much better light weight mid hiker. The materials seem tougher, the toe box is bigger, and it's lighter. Although the sole is thinner than previous versions (which I've seen people hate on for it's apparent lack of support), it seems to still be very supportive and offer great rock protection. I haven't put any miles on this pair yet, but if it dissapoints I'll be sure to update my review.
I've tried lots of similar shoes trying to get the perfect ultralight mid day hiker for high mileage (Inov8 Roclight, Keen Shellrock Mid, etc.)and this seems to be the best so far.

The New Hardrock '09 is lighter, has more flex in the fore foot, and utilizes 'perimeter control' where the foot is supported by the midsole during direction change on the trail. The shoe also has a substantial medial post that does much to help over-pronators in stride. This is a great shoe for fast packing or light hiking or for anyone that needs a little more ankle support. Hope this info helps!

Good light weight hiker

By:
May 27, 2009

These hiking shoes were pretty much what I was looking for - a fast lightweight water proof hiker. Only problem is I have a wide foot and after trying on two different sizes, I just couldn't make 'em work. Order at least a 1/2 size larger. If only Montrail would make a wider toe box like their old Continental Divide shoes.

I wear a size 10 in the Namche using smart wool adrenaline socks. Does the new Hardrock have a similar fit?

Got my size 10 Hardrock Mid GTX today and took out for a 5 mile test drive. Fit is good and much same as the size 10 Namche. Have trip planned to Yosemite starting next week. Will review after 5 day hike. Oh! my right shoe weighs in at 16.3 oz and left at 16.0 oz. Essentially same weight as Namche.

I think this product has taken over for the Namche and the Stratos.

I think this product has taken over for the Namche and the Stratos. Does anyone know if that's correct?

The Namche and the Statos have been discontinued this spring. The Hardrock Mid is the closest thing in the line to those shoes and it is ALLOT lighter! Hope this helps.
