Montrail Hardrock '09 Trail Running Shoe - Women's

Inspired by the Hardrock 100 ultra race, the Montrail Hardrock Trail Running Shoe excels on the rough, rocky terrain of its namesake. The Hardrock also works well on rugged dayhikes or fastpacking adventures. The shoe's multi-directional lugs give you added stability on those extra rough sections. Montrail updated the Hardrock this year with a Gryptonite sole for maximum traction in wet and dry conditions. Montrail shaved weight and fabric from the Women’s Hardrock '09 Trail Running Shoe without sacrificing one speck of durability of support. A combination of hydrophobic synthetic leather, mesh, and rubber makes the upper incredibly tough and very breathable as well. Montrail even added Gryptonite rubber outsoles for added traction on everything from rocks to logs to steep, loose scree.

Bottom Line: Stay rubber down.

So if a person were to look for the more "hiking" old Hardrocks, just make sure they don't say '09? Granted, they would be the older model going into extinction. :(

Greetings. Just to elaborate a smidge... it was not the relationship with Columbia (going on 4 years) that led to the changes in this shoe... it is what Dakkaguru refers to... the market place, sales, competition etc. There are many people out there that love their older Hardrocks and we do too. It was time for a change and the evidence was undeniable. These are not the Old Hardrocks but the Hardrock '09 is what many were asking for which was basically more of a running shoe than a hiking shoe. We may have missed it a little for some and we probably shouldn't have called it the Hardrock but this shoe, design-wise, weight-wise etc is what many were looking for from us and they suggest a very progressive and market right direction for our future. Try 'em out see what you think...

The Montrail Hardrock changed in 2009. The proverbial " the only constant is change" perspective tells me it's never going back. Isn't it better that Montrail questions what they're doing and making small adjustments here and there that eventually lead into a complete overhaul which results in a better product rather than keeping the product stagnant as the running world and their competitors enclose around them and eventually bypass them all like a colossal floatilla of Spanish mercenary ships together, leaving them in a dust of antiquated technology and designs as well as dwindling sales?

Missing the old Hardrock model

By:
September 18, 2009

Previously, I owned a pair of Montrail Hardrock bought in early 2007. I loved them. During two years I hiked volcanos in tropical rain forest, the Appalachians, ran on trails and asphalt. They fit perfectly my feet (a bit narrow and overpronated). Althugh I am a size 8, I used a 8.5.
I wanted to substitute them but had to return the Hardrock 09. This new model has notrhing to do with the wunderschuh former Hardrock. I am sad that I cannot find a similar fit anymore. The new Hardrock are wider, longer and less comfortable. the materials seem to be of a lesser quality.

The Hardrock '09 does not come in widths. I have found that it runs true to size and fits a wider foot (mine) just fine. I have also heard that a couple of folks that used to run in the old Hardrock-Wide have found that they fit this shoe great. One of them have run the Leadville 100 11 times. I mean if you have a 'D' width foot I would try them... if you have a 'EEE' or something maybe not? Good Luck!

I checked around on the web and it looks like these shoes only come in width "B" (medium.) Also, they were voted Best Run/Hike Crossover- Backpacker Magazine's Gear of the Year Awards 2009.

Hey there,
I had the 2008 version in a size 9, which fit great length-wise, but was a teeny bit snug width-wise until I wore them in quite a bit (took a couple months). I ordered the '09 ver in size 9 for this reason and found that they fit very comfortably width-wise, but that they were really long on my feet (longer than my old pair). I wear between an 8.5-9 usually (I size up to get my width right), so I just wanted to warn you about the length:width ratio if you had the same problem.
