Zip up the Montane Men’s eVent Halo Stretch Jacket and rise above hellaceous weather. The Halo’s waterproof breathable eVent fabric is the chameleon of outerwear fabrics, ready to adjust to the most sudden of weather changes. Its unsurpassed breathability leaves the steam room at home to keep you dry and comfortable. Stretch panels give you maximum freedom of movement as you hike and climb. you can use them as handwarmers, the pockets are high to be out of way of hipbelts/harnesses but I can still get my hands in them comfortably. As a warning this is a lightweight shell so really not meant to be warm. I suggest using gloves rather than pockets during prolonged cold rain, will work much better.

I use mine as handwarmers but they also work well as vents esp when working hard on ice!

If you can get your hands in 'em, warm 'em up. But actually, since they're closer to your chest, I'd imagine hands would get warmer quicker. So go for it.

eVent more breathable than similar gore products, stretch works well, hood like a ninja/balaclava style thing, nice wire brim, sweet weight. Bottomline this jacket performs well. Some small gripes. 1. for a price like this montane should put something soft right around the face and lips like tricot or fleece or something, it's really just less comfortable having your face on the shell material and the lining is the traditional three layer type of semi scratchy stuff. 2.) The main zipper has an awfully large rain flap in addition to the waterproof zipper so that it makes it hard to use the zip. FYI for us Americans the zipper will seem backwards, but one can get used to that part. 3.) This shell fabric seems thin in order to be lightweight. My concern is stretch reinforced around elbows+pockets+cuffs but not shoulders. I wonder if packstraps will wear on shoulders over time, haven't had long enough to tell if this will be a problem.

Why is the breathability rating of this jacket is less (only 17K) than in other eVent jackets?

The Event fabric used is the super light version which is lighter than other forms but the compromise is a loss of breathabilty. The more breathable one is the 3 layer. Event have numerous fabrics - a bit like gortex with their Paclite, Performance Shell, Pro Shell etc. Each fabric has different abilities.

Hope that helps

Halo Jacket 12 months on

By:
September 28, 2009

I've used my Halo for long days out in the Lakes fells (U.K.), skiing at times, walking the dogs on the beach, even once or twice on my mtb when desperate, all in shockingly bad northern UK weather! It remains watertight, the DWR has remained good despite little washing (it's recommended to wash eVENT jackets regularly), and to answer some of the questions, the pockets work just fine as handwarmers (they are a little higher than some others but not too much). The stretch works well and the hood adjusts well. Any questions please feel free to ask me directly. tim@montane.co.uk
