Metolius Safe Tech All-Around Harness

The Metolius Safe Tech All Around Harness is one of the best fitting, safest harnesses in the world. Ergonomically shaped components afford awesome freedom of movement for men and women. Metolius' sophisticated adjustment system lets you fine tune the fit by simply adjusting the riser length; that is the distance between the waist belt and leg loops. This harness also boasts the world's toughest and longest wearing tie-in points. Every component including the leg risers, gear, haul, and belay loops are engineered to withstand a load of at least 2250 lbf (10kN)—that's FULL strength and typically the max impact force rating of a modern climbing rope. **ABOUT SAFE TECH HARNESSES: Due to an alarming number of accidents involving the misuse of harnesses and/or the failure of harness components, Metolius designed their Safe Tech Series with every possible margin of safety in mind. The structural systems of the Safe Tech harness have been made as redundant and error-proof as possible, e.g., the waist buckle even shows the word ‘DANGER' if not correctly double-passed.

Bottom Line: Equal parts ingenuity and brute strength, Safe Tech harnesses perform true to their name.

Almost There

Not as comfortable as my Arc'Teryx Targa, but the adjustable rise wins me over. Now lead falls don't nearly pitch me over backwards. Beefy sturdy, but comes up a little short on details. The tail gets crimped by the first gear loop when run through the elastic keeper. Friends have this harness and the placement of the elastic keeper loop varies. No loop to keep harness together while buckling, but seems available on the deluxe model. Leg loops uncomfortable with little padding for hanging long periods of time. If you can afford the deluxe model it appears to be more comfortable. Finally, the waist strap is different colors on different sizes (or is it models, I dunno). Mine goes from black to red when buckled properly. Not a big deal, but since red usually indicates something is not "right", as on your locking biners and the buckle of competitor's harnesses, it just seems like an odd choice. Main gripe is comfort, but I'll trade staying upright any day.

Blake - I am a new climber and just purchased this harness for my first. I don't lead climb yet but was interested in how the adjustability provided you more stability in falls. could you email me how to properly adjust to maximize stability and comfort when haniging.

Thanks,
Clint

Good Deal...

I've used this harness for sport, multi-pitch, and alpine climbs. It's a solid no frills product that is also quite comfy. Some a hole stole a pack full of gear from me and this harness was in it. Just replaced it with the deluxe model, so I must be happy with the design! Has a larger fit than the BD harnesses I've worn... I wear a small in metolius and a med. in BD.

Review Title

This harness is not bad. It's not nearly as comfortable as my BD Momentum AL or my BD Blizzard, but it does the job. Once you get the proper leg rise set, it works well. Honestly, I bought it because I was enamored with the idea of every loop on the harness having some sort of usable strength rating. (Obviously I have no plans to clip into a gear loop.) IT was nice, however, being able to Aussie-rappel using the rear haul loop instead of putting the harness on backwards first.

safe & comfortable

This harness takes a bit longer to put on because of the buckles, but after that you can hang all day and the gear loops, in my opinion the best I have seen they are always remain erect.

Safe Tech

By:

This is a great harness that provides security unlike any harness on the market. Leg straps and supports as well as haul and gear loops are strong enough to provide anchor support. Features such as full weight support if the strap is not doubled back as well as leg loops that adjust make this a great all around harness. Cons: A little heavy and all the safety might make you lazy in other harnesses.

Awesome for Rescue

By:
January 26, 2009

It is not as comfortable when on hanging belays, but as the previous reviewer stated, is awesome at keeping you head up in a fall.
The mountain rescue team I'm a member of is making the transition to the Safe Tech's as our team gear. The full strength loops and rear belay make it awesome for rescue, and the adjustable drop on the leg loops is great for when you use varying garments under your harness (alpine, rock, summer, etc).
