Metolius Fat Bastard Crash Pad - 2007

Long-time dominator of the crash pad market, Metolius has no intention of idling away their leadership in the bouldering scene. One of Metolius' newest offerings, the Fat Bastard Crash Pad has not only a great name, but also some excellent features to protect your butt from sketchy landings. Three inches of open-cell foam topped by one inch of high-density closed-cell foam create four whopping inches of impact diffusion and absorption. Metolius' trademark 45-degree center hinge allows this pad to fold flat and still avoid the center gutter that occurs on most hinged crash pads; land dead center on the hinge, and it won't feel any different than straddling the hinge. Laminated die-cut shoulder straps, a waist-belt and a briefcase handle turn the heinous trek to the Druids into a pleasant morning stroll. Seal the deal with custom Metolius aluminum buckles. Metolius stamps these buckles with a slight curve for superior holding power and unbreakable strength.

Bottom Line: When your ankles and your spine depend on a crash pad, why choose anything less?

This Bastard Breaks My Falls with Ease

Metolius has come out with yet another great product and - as far as crash pads go - it's probably one of the best if not the best in quality for it's price range. I've taken many 10 foot falls and even a 15 foot fall and I barely felt it - just make sure you land right! I must for anyone serious into bouldering or climbers who would like that added protection before clipping into that first bolt.

great pad, but a little stiff

By:

This pad is great. It does everything you want it to, but we all know that when it comes to camping, you have to sleep on your crash pad at night. This one is a bit stiff to be considered a mattress but that’s not what this pad is made for obviously, and well it does a great job for what it is made for. I would easily trust this pad under me for a 15 foot fall. It’s never going to bottom out.

Great!!

Great pad!! It carries well and I wave yet to bottom out on it. It also doesn't fold in half when you land on it due to the beveled center seam and hook and loop closure to hold it open.

fire fire

I have fallen on this pad numerous times threw my bouldering excursions and have yet to find flaws. Stands up to abuse. Side not. This pad does not like to be close to fire so on a cold night make things aren't melting.
