Merrell Traverse Backpacking Boot - Men's - 2007

Your friend's pack fits only 45 liters, and it looks like you'll be carrying the heavy stuff. Outfit your feet with the Merrell Men's Traverse Backpacking Boot and count on excellent traction, support, and shock-absorption—even under a heavy load and across tough terrain. Slip-lasted construction and a Vibram Backpacker sole with Trek rubber keep you gripped to that sloping rock face, even when your pack tries to answer to the call of gravity. Merrell gave these leather boots compression-molded EVA midsoles for support and Air Cushion midsoles to take the sting out of downhill jaunts. A TPU rear stabilizer keeps your heel in place for precise footing and less blisters. Should your trek involve hardpack or ice, the Traverse Boots work with most styles of crampons.

Bottom Line: Traverse streams, small glaciers, and mountain faces in these Merrell backpacking boots.

Boots Not WATER PROOF

By:
September 10, 2008

I recently bought a pair of these boots for a 100 mile hike around Mt. Rainier. Wore them for a few days and was very pleased up until I decided to test their waterproofness. I stepped into some water in a creek and the boots filled with water through the heel. Returned them right away.

Is there or does anyone have a picture of the sole of these? I would one like to see how the sole is shaped/curved. Two the tread on it. I can't find a picture of it anywhere.

No Compaints

By:

I originally settled on these boots because they're made to carry heavier loads. They offer great support and stability over uneven terrain. The soles are pretty sticky too if you're on rock. I will typically wear a liner sock and did so when I broke these in. The break in period was fast and I never had any blistering or discomfort. In fact for my feet which are very wide they've always felt great. I bought a half size larger to make up for the extra bulk of the liner sock and the over sock (liners are recommended to be worn with this boot my the manufacturer). I have seen other reviews stating that the boots are not water proof, perhaps there's some inconstancy between pairs. I have walked through streams with them many times and haven't experienced any leakage at all. Again, maybe they are not all made equally, my laces have plenty of extra length. Mine do me well.

How durable is the outside material of these boots? I have had problems with leather boots in the past being torn or at least suffering a nasty gash from falling on rocks or tripping over down branches, so I am kind of apprehensive about buying another pair. Anybody have some insight?

Not for the wide of foot...or medium for that matter

By:
October 24, 2008

I am a bit disappointed with the boots. It should be noted that I do not have large feet...normal width, size 10.5. First time on my foot out of the box, I noticed they pinched the ball of my foot. After trying to lace them up, it was clear that the laces weren't long enough to strap down to the 3 levels of quick strap hooks and tie up tightly...I was dealing with nubs and aglets. After a severe strapping down of the laces, I walked around for a bit and my heel was free to move up and down in the boot. Not a comforting thought before heading out on a days trek. I can't attest to their longevity or long term comfort because these are getting sent back.

They would be good for summer use. I personally prefer a Gore-Tex boot because they do breath but any full grain leather boot is better than synthetics for durability issues.

Very Versatile

By:
August 28, 2008

These boots are solid and sound. They give you excellent support (note: very comfortable) and balance with the elongated heel structure and they also raise your height by at least one-inch and a half! It has reliable traction, and they are very comfortable around the ankles and toes once you settle upon on your custom lacing. If you wear half-sizes you may consider rounding it off for desired flexibilty with socks. I can't wait to really put them to the test, therefore, I gave it a four star rating for it's ergonomically structure and it's visually rugged appeal.

They are very waterproof, they aren't going to be getting wet from the outside, unless it comes in through the top of the bootVery true - i got water( almost 30's temp) in the shoes, but still felt very warm inside.. and was a breeze to dry the boot later

Great comfort when cold..

By:
September 8, 2008

Great boots, was hiking up rock terrains in Granite Mntn and Cascade Pass and Mt.Shuksan. My feet felt so great at night, it was amazing. But the average temp was around 40's - 60's. Tried the hike in 70's once ..turned out to be a sweaty mess. But i would take that any day over hurting feet later... Great ankle support and good support for downhill.

good boots

By:
October 19, 2008

these boots really perform at the standard I was expecting. I have used them for two outings so far, one in 60 degree weather the other in 40 to 50 degree weather. they have reasonable breathability. They are waterproof to my use. I have not forded any streams with them yet. They also offer great support for your anlke and footbed, which is great for backpacking.

Will Post Again to Update

By:
April 11, 2008

This is a preliminary review, as I have not run these boots through the gauntlet yet. Have only broken them in in day to day life and done a few short trail hikes in them.

Pros: Excellent waterproofing, very comfortable and warm. Very supportive. Amazing traction on everything: steep grades, loose gravel, ice, nothing stops em.

Cons: Heavy, very stiff (took 8 days to break them in). Not good for warm weather. Haven't had a day off yet that was in the 40's or 50's yet, have only tested extremes. 20's and 30's great, 70's was a sweaty mistake.

Best Boot Ever

By:

The Traverse is extremly confrable so long as it's laced up properly. It is very durable, keeps your feet warm dry and confrable. I have yet to use them in the Adirondacks as was their main pourpose but I look foreward to doing so.
