While your buddy’s big toe turns blue and puffs up to the size of a cucumber (he’s wearing open-toe sandals), you stand next to him on the trail trying to be sympathetic but inwardly wondering why he didn’t go with Merrel’s Saugatuck Sandal like you did. After all, the Saugatuck has a rubber toe bumper, a comfortable EVA footbed, and a molded shank for bottom-of-foot support. Plus a waterproof leather upper, neoprene lining, and antimicrobial treatments on the lining and footbed. And a grippy Vibram sole.

Bottom Line: Because broken toes are no fun.
