If you're into day hikes, but you don't need a super-stiff hiking boot with crazy ankle support, grab the Merrell Men's low-cut Outland Shoes. The Outland Shoes' slip-lasted construction provides flexibility, while molded side and toe bumpers provide protection from sharp rocks and other trail hazards. The upper leather fabric stands up to seasons of wear, and the Air Cusion midsole absorbs shock with each step. Deep lugs on the Vibram sole provide traction on scree fields.
Bottom Line: The Merrell Outland Shoes give you support on the trail without a super stiff feel.
My first pair of Merrel. I decided to go with Merrels because a friend of mine has neuropothy in his feet and is a land surveyor and says he can't work in nothing but Merrels. I tried several styles and like these the best. I stand behind a counter on a hard concrete floor all day and my feet have hurt so bad lately that some days I just simply want to cry out in pain. i've never experienced foot pain like it since I took the job I have. After purchasing these shoes I have not had a single day of foot pain in my arches. They have GREAT arch support for you high arch footers like myself. As noted by another review the footbed is a simple piece of thin foam, which is why I couldn't give these shoes 5 stars. My friend tells me every pair of Merrels he has owned in the last decade have had these type footbeds in them. We figure Merrel must expect aftermarket footbeds to be purchased. But I'm not complaining cuz not having to deal with the pain in my arches make this shoe a life saver for work. I ordered the green superfeet for insoles; can't wait to get them in. The shoes are great for hiking.I love the vibram soles! Great lugs!!! Only when I'm standing in one place at work all day do I realise the lack of great footbeds. During my hikes I feel like I'm walking on air. These are a great alternative to heavy hiking boots. They really do look and feel like they should be able to hold up a great deal. I guess the AT next year will put them to the real test! Sizing seems right on as I typically wear a size 9 and my Merrels are a size 9 as well. Better footbeds would have gotten em 5 stars; however, 4 stars is still great in my book and these shoes are a God send for work, much less play!
Size 14 (US), width E. Mile 1: I could wear them forever! Mile 2: No hot spots. No problem! Mile 6: Feels like I've walked the last mile on marbles, barefoot. Mile 8: Maybe if I cut off a finger or two, I'll forget about the pain in my feet. Mile 9: I'm convinced the shoes have shrunk three sizes and are insulated with glass shards. Mile 10: Finally, camp! Take off shoes and feet look, well, just fine. There's no indication whatsoever I've hiked ten miles in a pair of steel vices with what feels like a cheese grater/drill bit insole. Lesson: Not for wide feet.
On am on the tail end of my secon pair of these shoes (9.5 US)- paid $100. They are outstanding for comfort and easy to adjust without laces. The only downside- you must always use the heel flap when putting them on. My first pair were ruined after I negelected my previous advice- a small tear develped at the top of the shoe at the heel and propagated until the shoe was uncomfortable. I have gone 18 months of moderate use with my second pair and they have held up better than expected. Twister
I tried these on in a retail store, liked the fit and the soft sole but wanted to shop around more. Ended up liking them the best so I ordered them from this site rather than drive 50 miles back to town. They show up fast, just as ordered, but when I put on the right shoe it is way tight against the side of my big toe - not at all like the ones I tried on at the store. On closer inspection I could see that they were just poorly assembled (China, go figure). Also, the insole insert thing is SO cheap, just a cheesy, extremely thin piece of foam - not what you would expect in a $90 shoe. On the positive, they are good looking and this site took them back and credited my account no problem. I did have to pay for shipping tho.
These were true to size for me, and have been a comfortable, supportive shoe. I bought them primarily for disc golfing in the northwest, which means walking a lot in rainy, rough terrain and needing to have a stable platform for when you're on the tee. They've been great for this, and have held up better than most shoes. I have worn through the toe bumper on my left foot, but that's b'cuz I'm dragging my toe in my throw. If only I could solve that, and then I'd surely stop throwing it into the trees. At any rate, when these wear out, I'll be picking up another pair.
Looks good and grabs good to terrain. I think it is a little low and wide making it easy to get dirt and stones into the shoe while hiking, what makes it a bit uncomfortable. The sole is soft which is excellent for long walks.
These hiking shoes are like Hilary Clinton...Ready to go on day one! Really, these shoes are great! I broke them in on a 10 mile hike and they felt very supportive and comfortable. This is my first pair of Merrell's and definitely not my last!
