The Merrell Men's Moab GTX XCR Shoe's Gore-Tex gasket and waterproof nubuck leather in the upper keep your feet dry when the trail spends miles criss-crossing creeks, or you get stuck in a freak storm. Gore-Tex XCR also offers excellent breathability that combines with mesh in the Moab GTX XCR’s uppers and tongue to enhance ventilation, which you’ll prostrate yourself in thanks for when the mercury rises beyond civilized temperatures. Merrell added a rubber toe bumper, heel counter, and Vibram’s Multi-Sport Plus outsole to provide the protection, support and traction you need to remain as agile as an ocelot on the hunt.
Bottom Line: Built and tested in one of the least inviting rocky and mountainous regions in North America.
Right out of the box the Merrell Moab GTX XCR's were asked to do some pretty brutal bushwacking in Northern Wisconsin in an early-season snow storm that dropped half-a-foot of the white stuff. Not only did the Vibram soles stick like glue to the slop snow and leaves on the ground, the Gore-Tex kept me dry and they were more than warm enough with a good pair of smartwools. Since then, weekend fastpacking trips and early morning bike commutes in the rain have been a piece of cake. I'm in love with the air cushion insole and the look of these are pretty sweet too. My only complaint is that they're a little on the heavy side for hiking shoes. A lot of my friends have these from years past and none have crapped out nor had any complaints against their integrity or comfort.
The vibram sole can be a little slippery on wet pavement or concrete but that is not its purpose. Lightweight but durable. Keeps feet dry and the mesh upper keeps feet very cool on hot days.
I've had the same pair for the past year and a half. I use them for light and fast day hikes as well as kicking around town and games of ultimate frisbee. They work well in all conditions. Great tred has given me great traction on almost any surface. My feet have never been wet thanks to the Gore-Tex. Comfortable right out of the box. The toe rubber is starting to come off. Foot fatigue is something a lot of people deal with, and I've never had that problem, not even when carrying a 25-35 pound pack. Shoes are showing wear, then again, I've used these shoes in everything from desert walking to hiking on snowy/muddy trails to rock scrambling. So all my adventures plus use as an every day shoe, the wear they show is expected. Will be getting another pair very soon!
Only Con: Merell should sew the toe rubber piece to the actual shoe, instead of glue only.
I've beat the crap out of these shoes through all seasons and they are still solid as new. Nice and wide up by the toes for long lasting comfort and stability on uneven ground. Totally recommend them!!
I have owned two pairs of these over the past 4 years and I can promise you they are the best shoe out there for any weekend warriors like me. The pair I have now have summited 16 14ers with me this summer and perform just as well trail running the flatirons as they do navigating the narrows on longs peak. They are also great looking shoes, even if the picture doesnt look like it.
Cons: - I wore these shoes daily for a couple months until the extra wide toe box started to sqeeze together where the laces loop back up and created a fold in the material which rubbed on the tops of my big toes and hurt to the point that I couldn't wear them daily. - About the same time, the sole started to separate from the upper in a couple places - As my primary pair of shoes, I played multiple sports in these shoes which resulted in the footbed progressively loosening and then shifting its way back and up by the heels when I'd wear them. (Very Annoying) - I found the shoes to be too hot even though they are suppose to have "excellent breathability"
Pros: + The GTX waterproofing works wonders. I can submerse them trudging through puddles and not get wet. + The Vibram sole has held up nicely and keeps traction quite well, even when muddy. +I've been fairly tough on them and there are noticable scuffs wearing the nubuck upper by the toes but has held together and hasn't effected their performance
I now just wear these as work 'boots' because of their waterproofing, durability, and traction. I would not recommend these if looking to use them for long periods of time though.
These are solid shoes so don't be fooled by my 3 star review. It is just that my previous Merrells were the Chameleons which were much more comfortable. These are a bit on the clunky side. But they worked great on a week long hiking trip I went on. They gave me solid traction in the mud and definitely kept the water out.
