Merrell Chameleon Wrap Gore-Tex Hiking Shoe - Men's - 2007

Lightweight, non-bulky, and totally waterproof. No, it's not a backpack. It's the Merrell Men's Chameleon Wrap Gore-Tex Hiking Shoe, and it keeps your feet dry and agile in mucky, wet mountain weather. These low-top pigskin leather shoes feature Gore-Tex linings that eliminate soak-through during storms and stream-crossings. Breathable mesh panels let fresh air flow to your feet without allowing access to water or trail chunks. Your foot will appreciate the Chameleon Wrap's grippy Vibram rubber sole, super supportive compression-molded EVA footbed, and the stabilizing instep arm that keeps your feet centered and, by proxy, improves your balance. Merrell recommends wearing this shoe with a midweight hiking sock.

Bottom Line: Go for a fast, light hike—regardless of the forecast—with the Merrell Chameleon Wrap Gore-Tex Hiking Shoes on your feet.

Not bad, but..

By:

I had a pair of these I used for about a year. I generally liked them and the waterproofing was excellent. However, I ran into problems with the soles- the grippy nobs started coming off, exposing the midsole underneath. They are also quite wide, so they work best for high volume feet. Generally they were good shoes, but i've since switched to Salomon shoes which thus far have been more durable and fit my (narrow-ish) feet a bit better.

Great Quality

By:

If you are looking for a comfortable lightweight hiking shoe these are great. I bought mine about two years ago and have used them while hunting/hiking and have no real complaints. They have held up to everything I have put them through and that is fairly impressive. Like others have said they are very waterproof and I haven't had any troubles crossing small streams or walking through snow at all. So if you are looking for a lightweight versatile shoe these will do the job for you no doubt.

Gore Chameleons

By:

These are heaver duty than they look, in that they are a stiff shoe. They are good for casual wear but the reason to buy these is for a good light hiker in wet conditions. I would suggest you order a half size bigger.

Order a half size up

By:
December 12, 2008

Unlike most burly waterproof hiking shoes, this shoe is fairly quick to break in and doesn't feel like a wooden clog when off the trail and on the pavement. I haven't tested mine out a great deal yet, but have thus far proven waterproof and comfortable. Fits wide feet, which is nice, but size up by half a shoe size. Mine are a little snug in the toe (my fault for not reordering a larger size).

Fits high volume feet!

By:
June 19, 2008

These shoes are actually made to fit American feet, which are most often higher volume than other ethnic populations. We suffer from a trait known as greek toes, where the index toe is longer than is efficient. This means a narrow heal and wider instep. A common fitting device will not indicate this as the point of measure is in the middle of the foot, where our feet are at a normal width. While the heal of these is a bit too wide, insoles and an extra sock will take of this. The most important thing is that these shoes give our toes enough room to spread out. Another trait of greek toes is a medium to low arch, and these shoes are perfectly made for just such an arch. In other words, if you're an average American, these shoes were made to fit you. If you have had problems with Sportiva, Asolo, or any other man. being to narrow just in the toebox, then try Merrells. They are super-well built, comfy, and they offer just the right amount of flexibility and stability for their purposes. What a great company...

Best of the Best

By:

These are by far the best pair of shoes I have ever owned. I have had the same pair for about a year and a half and I have put them through hell. They are truly water proof. I have stood submerged in a stream for several minutes and I come out dry every time (so long as the water doesn't come over the top of the shoe). The soles are vibram so you know that they are real solid and mine are still working pretty well. The construction of the shoe is real solid as well, there are no major problems so far. I would strongly recommend this shoe!

Great Shoes

By:
May 5, 2008

I've owned mine for two years. I've been through snow and rain. Through the desert and to the top of mountains. I used these boots to trek across Europe and through the grind of hanging Sheetrock everyday. The outside of the shoe is perfect. The inside, around the heal, finally broke down. The only complaint I can think of is that they don't breathe very well. The fit is the typical Merrell Fit; Like a stiff Asics running shoe. I'm ordering another pair right now.

Fun Stuff

By:

Well, I always go for quality in everything whether it be Oakley for sunglasses or North Face for gear. Merrell tops the shoe department. This especially is a great shoe for hiking. I've used it in all types or terrains here in Utah. Early spring hiking in the Uintah's up Catherines Pass, Spring hiking in Bell's Canyon, and recent summer stuff to Sugarloaf Peak via Silver Lake. The Gore-Tex lived up to it's claim and never let any water in even while walking in snow and trotting through streams. Great support and provide excellent traction on all types of trails. Snow, dirt, gravel, rocks, only thing I am concerned about is traction on rocks when wet. It held up most times but I couldn't completely trust it 100%. I'm waiting on the Chameleon II Stretch to use those as a casual shoe and also little day hike shoe as well. Bottom line: Great quality that performs well in all terrains and conditions.

Solid!

By:
October 17, 2008

Bought this for some hiking in Peru and it worked a treat! It was raining solidly for half a day, and it barely let in any water, even after immersing it crossing a stream. It's also surprsingly light (did part of the Oxfam trailwalk in them) and very solid (I liked that fact that the rubber came up around the toe and the sides of the shoe). The only reason it loses a star is because it doesn't grip that well in the wet

Too wide for my feet

By: Backcountry.com Employee
September 26, 2008

Of course width never came to mind while I was trying these shoes on. And because I'm totally impulsive, I purchased them and now I partially regret it. I love that they're waterproof (Gore-tex liner in the shoe) and great for scrambling and/or easy climbing. But my foot slides around in them like no other. Also, because they don't breath as well as a normal shoe, they're pretty toasty. You're feet will stay dry (provided you're standing in a 1.5" deep puddle) but will be sweaty. All in all I like the shoes, just too wide. Hope that helps.
