Merrell Carbon Rain Jacket - Men's - 2009

Merrell designed the Men’s Carbon Rain Jacket with all-weather athletes in mind. This jacket’s Gore-Tex Paclite fabric offers guaranteed waterproof protection that breathes like crazy during fast and light trips. Merrell designed this lightweight shell with waterproof underarm zips, putting temperature control and ventilation in your hands during soggy hikes. The Carbon's fully sealed seams provide an impenetrable barrier against wet weather, and waterproof pockets keep your small essentials bone dry.

Bottom Line: The Carbon won’t wimp out when water’s about.

This is the best jacket I've ever owned. It's lightweight, comfy, and fits great. I bought it in black and wear it every day!

How does this compare to the Backcountry.com Shift Welder Hoody?

Also, The Shift Welder is 1/2" longer in center back length (Shift is 29 1/2", Carbon Rain is 29" for size large).

The Welder:
- More pockets (2 hand, 1 chest, 1 internal vs 2 hand)
- Less waterproof, more breathable
- Bigger hood (helmet compatible)
- Polartec Power Shield
- Welded seams (lighter and stronger than stitched/taped)

The Carbon:
- More waterproof, less breathable
- Stowable hood
- Gore-tex Paclite
- Seam-taped
- Pit zips
- $50 cheaper

I'd go with the Welder personally, it's on the bleeding edge of jacket technology and is just an all-around more versatile jacket. If you REALLY need the waterproofing though, the Welder won't cut it. It's a softshell, so it won't take a full-on downpour like this will.

Best Paclite I've Found

By:
March 25, 2009

I did a lot of research on the tons of Paclite jackets out there. I was hesitant because this one was about $30 more than the rest, but it's worth it. Obviously Paclite is Paclite but I really like all of the features (e.g. pockets, stowable hood etc.) that the Merrell jacket has. I also like the little bit of flair with the graphic on the back. Two thumbs up!
