Marmot Pinnacle Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Down

The versatile Marmot Pinnacle Sleeping Bag works well for summer alpine backpacking trips and shoulder-season climbing trips. This 15-degree mummy bag has a spacious trapezoidal foot box so your feet don't feel mummified. A down-filled draft tube along the zipper and a cozy hood seals in the warmth. The DWR-coated nylon shell helps keep the 800-fill down dry in light precipitation.

Bottom Line: The Pinnacle of versatility from Marmot.

Excellent Down Bag

By:
November 17, 2008

Fantastic down bag. It both kept me warm in very cold temperatures, and was not overly hot on a more mild night. Compared to some competitor bags, Marmot bags have slightly more wiggle room considering the similar weights. I consider this the ideal 15 degree bag compared to the Sawtooth and the Helium - the EN 13537 rating is 6 degrees better for this bag than the Helium, and this bag packs pretty tight and light also.

Hi,
I am looking for advice on how best to clean this bag after 6 months on the AT (not used the whole time). Can it be washed safely? And if so, what temperature? Any special instructions as I can not find any tags. Thanks

Yes, it can be washed safely and in fact, if you do it right, washing can help rejuvenate the down. First use a high quality down soap like those made by Nikwax and Granger's. Then use a large front loading commercial washing machine, not your home job which has an agitator, which can rip out the baffles. After washing use a large capacity commercial dryer on low or no heat and plan on spending a good portion of the day drying it. As it starts to dry add a couple tennis balls to the dryer to break up the down clumps or just stop every once in a while and pull them a part by hand. When you pull the wet bag from the washer be sure to scoop it up rather than pull as the heavy wet down could tear out a baffle.

Great bag

By:
July 1, 2008

I've used multiple Marmot bags. This will be my all purpose bag moving forward. I wanted something that would be warm enough for Winter camping but flexible and light enough to use in the Summer. This is a fairly pricey unit however it's absolutely worth the price if you are looking for a bag that gives maximum flexibility. This bag is extremely roomy....by far the most comfortable bag I've ever slept in. The full zip is worth the extra weight and space (for me anyway). I tend to sleep very warm and found this bag perfectly comfortable in warmer conditions.

Can a Pinnacle right hand zip and a Hellium EQ Left hand zip together?

Yes they can! So long as the two bags are both made within about 5 years, that shouldnt be a problem! The only thing you might see, is they are different lengths, then you're going to see some extra zipper hanging around, but that isnt the biggest deal.

Marmot Pinnacle

By:
September 24, 2009

This is an awsome down bag. It is very warm and not too cramped inside. I do tend to be a cold sleeper, but I have slept comfertably into the lower twenties with only a light base layer. I have found this bag to be too warm for milder nights, and have had problems with sweat collecting in the bag even with the side zip opened for ventilation. I find it to be more of an pain than a problem, and the bag even when mildly damp has always kept me warm. I have found that as long as the night time temps are below 35 degrees I am fine, but any warmer than that and this is just more bag than I will need. Marmot sleeping bags are very well built, and you won't be disappointed in the craftsmanship. I have not had any problems with loosing down, nor have I noticed any loss in loft. I would recomend this bag to anyone for a fall/spring bag, and for winter in mild climates.

They are both rated to 15 degrees, so the warmth is identical. The difference is due to the quality of the down - the helium is 850 fill, a finer down with a better warmth to weight ratio. So it weighs a bit less and will pack down smaller. Also if you're looking at the helium eq, it's water resistant, which is great if you're backpacking in wet areas. They're all great bags though.

Marmot Knows How To Build 'Em

By:
November 7, 2008

I've spent probably 30 nights in this bag now, and don't have a single complaint. Super warm and cozy, even right down around the rated temp (this isn't one of those "15 degree" bags that leave you shivering right below freezing). Full length zipper is great feature (a must, I would say) so you can vent the foot box easily (and you will have to, this is a WARM bag). Nice hood and adjustment cords, although I do have trouble sometimes cinching them down in the dark without a headlamp (but I seem to have problems with that in any bag... maybe I'm just slow). Fairly water resistant shell, although it will wet through against a wet tent wall eventually. Packs down nice and small and is feather light for such a warm bag. Great mild winter / shoulder season bag.

Best Down Bag Ever

By: Backcountry.com Alumni
October 30, 2009

This bag is ridiculous! I have never been so warm. I have terrible circulation and freeze in a tent, my feet are always cold and my body is cold too, my boyfriend told me to get a down bag. This bag changed my camping experiences. It is so down filled I can sleep on my side comfortable in the tent and I was so warm I had to strip down. I am so happy with my purchase of the Marmot Pinnacle, it's worth every penny! On our trip the air temperature was a little below freezing and I had just underwear on, so I'm imagining on a colder night I'd be fine in just a light baselayer for sleeping. Great bag, recommend it.

I am 185 cm as well and the regular is perfect for me. If you like a bit of room in the foot/head end you should go for the larger one. It is'nt very roomy lengthwise, but enough to fit into it properly. If you are 5 cm (2 inches) more i would definitely go for the larger one. You would still fit but...Room is the key. If you plan to sleep with additional clothing, a fuel canister, or you don't like being constricted, I consider the long. For the other people out there, at 6' even, I got the long. If you go too short, your feet hit the end of the bag which stretched the entire thing out. This makes you lose loft, and the bag won't stay as warm. I also like to have room to stuff a jacket at my feet to keep it warm for the morning.

I am right handed as well, but I sleep on my right side. I have learned over the years that I prefer the right-side zipper so I can open it when it's a bit too warm and not have an exposed shoulder. For me, the right-side zipper allows me to regulate my body temperature better. My wife is also a right-side sleeper, but she prefers the left-side zipper. I suppose that's the best of both worlds. Your tent door opening, for ventilation purposes, could also determine what side your zipper is on.

Good Bag

By:
July 24, 2009

This is a very warm bag. I have slept in 20 degrees F without any problems. The bag is very lofty and comfortable.I noticed it has been losing some feathers, but nothing too abnormal. I am 6'3" and a long is perfect. This is a good all around bag.

Sunset Chaser

By:
April 27, 2009

Well, it kept me warm through pretty much every type of weather while hiking the AT for a month so I feel I owe this little guy at least four stars. It's a bit clammy to sleep in (but I suppose all bags are??), but it makes up for it by keeping you warm and dry. If it gets a bit damp from rubbing against a tent wall or being dusted with rain while in a shelter, it dries quickly. Luckily I never got it very wet, so I am not sure how it responds to that. I am generally a very cold person when I sleep, but this one kept me warm so I recommend it to anyone who is generally cold while sleeping. My coldest night in it was about 20 degrees with a wind chill probbaly in the lower teens...and even then, it was great.

light and puffy

a great bag, light and compressible. i can't deal with super tight bags and this one has just enough space for me to be comfortable. Don't expect to toss and turn too easily though. Temperature wise... so far I slept in conditions from about 30 to 40 degrees, basically just opening up the zipper more or less to let warmth escape works very well.
everything is very well made ... the best bag i owned so far.
