Marmot Mica Jacket - Men's

When you need durable weather protection without the weighty extras, reach for the Marmot Men’s Mica Jacket. At only seven ounces, this fully waterproof breathable shell beats back afternoon thunder showers without feeling like a brick in your pack. Full PitZips dump heat while you hike, and the jacket stows in its own pocket for easy transport. Need more convincing? Well, how about National Geographic Adventure bestowing the Mica with its prestigious Gear of the Year award?

Bottom Line: All the protection for way less weight.

Excellent lightweight rain jacket with tradeoffs

By:

This thing is light! Also looks pretty good--there is a metallic-type finish to all the colors. I got the Eclipse Blue, and it looks better than others I have owned. Good quality overall.

I replace my TNF "Stimson" (a more rugged version of the Venture w/ mesh lining instead of no lining) because it was just too big and heavy. While that jacket was more waterproof, is the tradeoff in weight and size worth it? My TNF jacket takes up a ton of space (size of a textbook when folded -- I really dont know what else to compare it to) and weighs a little over a pound. But it does an excellent job at deflecting the rain. However, all that water protection also comes at the cost of breathability.

This one rolls into the size of an orange, weighs 6 oz (maybe less) in size small, and offers reasonable rain protection. Not as waterproof, but held up to some good DC downpours. FAR more breathable and comfortable to wear. Definitely looks better. Durability is proabbly not as good -- I wouldnt take this bouldering. But let's face it -- it doesn't rain THAT much in most parts of this country. And I am not going bouldering, at least not in DC. Weighing the pros and cons, I'd rather go with the lightweight, breathable option that offers pretty good protection for the few times it does rain, rather than the much heavier, much less breathable option.

Definitely a bit shorter than the Precip and Venture, but hey, being lightweight comes with tradeoffs. Wasn't that the point of this review?

Marmot - good quality, sizing small

By:

Hard to provide a 'star rating'.
Medium fits reasonably well in other brands - not Marmot.
Although the design and quality seemed excellent, the jacket was very tight and short.
Ordered it just before a trip and have not had the time to return it - that is the plan.
Always a bit of a risk when you are not familiar with the brand.
