Marmot Guides Down Sweater - Men's

The Marmot Men’s Guides Down Sweater balances everything you desire in an insulated jacket: lots of warmth, low weight, and just enough features. 650-fill goose down keeps you toasty whether you’re huddled at a belay, tent-bound on the mountain, or heading out for a drink. A wind flap behind the front zipper keeps air from coming through, and when it’s time to move, this jacket stuffs down into the inside zippered pocket. Marmot’s Angel Wing Movement and an elastic draw cord hem prevent cold and snow from getting in every time you lift your arms.

Bottom Line: Harness the power of the goose with this jacket.

Perhaps the best 650 fill down jacket out there

By:
December 11, 2008

I've been wearing my Marmot Guide sweater for about 2 seasons now, and I love it. I tried on all the major brands, North Face, Mountain Hardwear, Patagonia, and this one fit extremely well. I'm 5'11" medium build and the medium fit perfectly. You can lift your arms and the jacket stays put on your torso. I had the Mountain Hardwear sub zero first, but returned it because the collar wasn't soft on the inside, and the length of the jacket was so short I got a draft up my back (probably made that way for harnesses while belaying). The Marmot Guide Sweater has a longer back so you don't get drafts, a soft collar on the inside so it feels nice against your neck and chin, packs inside it's own internal pocket, and is VERY warm. I am up in the cold mountains often, and I've had this down to 0 degrees while staying toasty!

Snug as a bug in a rug!!!

Well first let me say that I am a big guy, being an ex-college lineman has its problems, first in a bar fight they always go for you first, and second finding gear to fit you. I can say that this jacket has been awesome, fits great, I am 6'3" and 285 i have a XXL and it is the best insulating jacket/sweater I have EVER owned. Even on sub-zero days walking through downtown Chicago, I was warm. IT is lightweight and packs up nicely in the inside stuff sack/ pocket, about the size of two nalgene bottles side by side. You can wear it over a short sleeve shirt and be comfy in the coldest of weather.

Does this jacket have baffles or are the sections stitched through?

Does this jacket have baffles or are the sections stitched through? Also, how well does it retain feathers?

The Guides Down Jacket is a quilted jacket (sewn through, not baffled). It has a high thread count down proof shell.

Utterly Brilliant Jacket

By:
January 14, 2009

This piece is fantastic. You can wear nothing but a t-shirt underneath in 15-20F weather and it will feel like it's sunny and 70F inside this jacket. I also like the fact that this down jacket is not overly bulky, like some other popular pieces I could name.

I also want to point out the ultra low-pile fleece lining around the collar. This detail *makes* the coat. I can't get over how great it feels when I've got the neck zipped to the top.

can you explain to me the difference (weight, warmth, etc) between down fill 650 and 750. which is warmer and which weights less. thanks

Down is warm because it traps a lot of air as insulation, it's not the material of the feathers themselves. The fill number is a measure of inverse density, specifically cubic inches per ounce. That means that one ounce of 650 will fill 650 cubic inches, whereas the same weight of 750 will fill another 100 cubic inches. So the higher the number, the more loft you get for a given weight and thus the more warmth. Really the total amount of down (puffiness) is more important.

Great no-frills down jacket!

By:
February 4, 2009

I haven't had this jacket for more than a few weeks, but I already love it. Warm, comfortable, lightweight and reasonably good looking...it really does it all for a reasonably price.

I was mainly looking for a down jacket to wear around town and under a shell for skiing from time to time, but I wasn't planning on wearing this thing backpacking. For what I was looking for, this jacket fits the bill and then some.

Pros:
1. Warm (I actually ordered 3 different jackets at the same time so I could choose the one that fit the best. It's warmer and bulkier than the Patagonia down jacket, but not bulky but just as warm as the North Face Nuptse jacket. It kind of splits that difference between bulk and warmth just perfectly in my book.)

2. Good fit (I'm 6'1" and weight 180lbs and the medium fits just right. The sleeves are long enough and the body stays in place when you raise your arms. Plenty of room to layer, but not too much as to feel like I'm wearing a garbage bag.)

3. Lightweight (As most down jackets go, this thing weighs very little. Not as light as the Patagonia, but light enough.)

4. Feels durable. (Haven't had it long enough to tell for sure, but the exterior ripstop feels like it'll hold up.)

5. Love the thermafleece lined collar and handwarmer pockets

6. Fits a little longer in length compared to Mountain Hardwear jacket I have, which is good as my waist doesn't feel exposed.

Cons:

1. Not a lot of frills. (Interior zip pockets doubles as stuff sack so it's cavernous which isn't ideal for a wallet or ipod.)

2. Zippers are so-so.

3. The look is pretty middle of the road.

Overall I love it so far. If it holds up then I give it a 5+. For the price, you really can't beat it as other jackets I tried just didn't live up in the "features/value" ratio.

Marmot Guide down sweater

By:
December 22, 2008

OK, I don't normally take the time to respond to reviews, but this is the greatest jacket I have owned. Super comfortable, great
fit (roomy) and VERY warm. If this is the "sweater" I can't imagine how warm the "jacket" must be. No, I'm not doing a major ex-
pedition- just walking around town (in the snow and wind) and general outdoor activities-- it has been perfect. I say "buy one
today"!

Marmot Guide Down Sweater

By:
January 7, 2009

I am very happy with this jacket. It is extremely comfortable and warm. I live in MN and spend alot of time outside, so I need something that keeps me warm, and this jacket does the trick. Plus, why buy a North Face down jacket when everyone else in the world seems to have one. Be original and buy Marmot!

Awesome purchase

By:
January 8, 2009

I bought this jacket as a gift. When I bought it I was not sure what it meant by "Sweater". When it arrived quicky I might add I was thrilled. I was so happy with the response I got from the receiver. It is not only warm, but it fits great(sz large, and the fact that it is so light weight makes it even better. I would really recommend this to anyone who would like a great wearing and veritable jacket that is so comfy and does not weigh you down and feel like you are in a huge puffer jacket. Way to go Marmot!!!
