MSR Exo 2 Titanium Pot

The MSR Exo 2 Titanium Pot gives you enough capacity for you and your climbing partner without weighing down your pack. The ultralight titanium construction shaves ounces while remaining durable, and the included lid doubles as a plate or a pasta strainer. Whether you’re melting snow or preparing basic one-pot meals on the mountain, the Exo 2 can’t be beat.

Bottom Line: Strong, ultralight cookware for two.

How will this pot handle the intense, focused heat from a Primus Omnifuel or a MSR XGK EX? Let's assume I have at least a little water in it and the stove is on high.

This pot can handle the heat from any stove currently on the market. You are absolutely correct about having something in the pot over the heat source. If not, any pot will definitely be destroyed!

potential gauge issue

Sorry, Jeff, but it aint exactly so. I picked up an Exo2 a couple weeks ago and immediately got it out into the field. I gather from your pictures and review of stoves that you're using a Primus Omnifuel. We were at about 10,000 ft with heavy winds and a temp of 15 degrees. We were also beat and ready to eat, as in NOW! My Omnifuel was cranked all the way up and the Exo had about 2 liters of water in it. We got to a rolling boil in about 4 minutes using isobutane, and had the flames licking up one side of the pot in a couple places. My partner noticed that the sides of the pot were distorting where the flames were. We watched it for a few more minutes while we made sure the water was disinfected. We didn't have any burn through or melting, but now a have a couple good sized permanent whumps in the pot. MSR was stunned to hear about this and wants their pot back for study. I can only attribute the problem to the gauge of the metal on the sides being significantly thinner than the bottom (or at least it appears to be). I own lots of titanium- Evernew, Snow Peak, Mont Bell- and of them all, the Exo 2 strikes me as the least sturdy. It may be due to the larger surface area, but any question as to sustainable reliability and performance is not an option. MSR is going to replace the pot, but for a mere 1.5 oz more (and $35 less), I'm wondering if carrying only the 2.5 liter MSR Base 2 is going to be a better choice, both in terms of reliability and versatility in menu options. I hate non-stick cookware, but I hate gear problems when it counts even more.

Does the Dragonfly stove completely fit in this pot so that the lid will fit on with the stove inside?

Yeah the Dragonfly is designed to fit into a 2L MSR stove, and this one is 2.4L so you are good to go.

Lightweight performer

The pot fits nicely in the ultralight niche. Upsides are minimal weight and built-in handle and lid. I recommend it strictly for boiling water and/or melting snow. Downsides are small volume, even at 2.4 liters it feels small. Also, titanium is not conducive to any cooking due to its very thin nature and it has led to burned meals. If I'm doing any cooking I also bring a 3 liter aluminum pot for maximum options.
