Dry!

By:

Doesn't leak, hooks up to MSR filters, virtually nonexistent in the pack if you don't need it. Also, super durable. I've had one for 6 or 7 years and then this model. New features are super handy, but more importantly, durability is no issue for these!

Best of its kind - typical MSR

By:

Ultra-durable, never leaks, comes in great sizes (personally I prefer my 6l), switches to a hydration system when you want it to. No flavors from it, caps are well-designed with the three openings. Basically MSR took the concept of lightweight water storage and perfected it.

I would not advise you keep it full when hiking because there is no good way to attach it. Normally I just keep it rolled up then pump my filter then tie it to a tree at night at camp to cook and fill up bottles then empty in the morning.

It does a better job.

By:

The major benefit of a bag like this, over a camelback or lexan bottles, is not so much to replace both with one but to utilize the versatility/capacity of a large water container that can also doubles as bladder. You can leave the camelback at home and keep the benefits of a bladder. They are collapsible and only take up as much room as the volume of water they hold, so if space it tight, they are pretty versatile. I bought this after wearing out two Nalgene 3L Wide-Mouth Canteens, and have been satisfied with the durability on the trail & compatibility with my water purifier. I use the 6L Dromedary Bag in my pack (about 1/3 full) and fill it as needed when hiking. Then, when you get to camp, you can fill up the bladder and have enough water for dinner and breakfast from one trip to fill it. The lining inside is nice and prevents bladder taste.
I had problems with the MSR Hydration Kit hose line becoming kinked in my pack, so I opted to assemble my own with a camelback bite valve/tube (which is more rigid to prevent kinking) and a Nalgene lid adapter (cause I already had one). I think that another good alternative is using the MSR spigot Cap with a Camelbak bite valve and hose - if it will stay together securely. Then it may be easier to use for washing cooking/dishes in camp. The nylon cord around the parameter is great for hanging up. A bag like this is not going to replace all your water holding needs - I still take a hard Nalgene bottle or mug, to mix drinks in, but the large capacity allows me to carry a smaller .5L to save space, instead of two or three 1L bottles. For me, it just works better.

6L & 10L

By:
December 3, 2008

I own both the 6 & 10 Liter bags and I can't rave enough about the construction, packability (space savings), functionality and the interchangeable accessories of this MSR series. I found myself using these bags over my previously loved hard-sided water bottles and camelback for carrying H2O which will all now be set out for the yard sale. Because I love to cook on the trail, and because I left my hard-sided H2O bottles at home, my camelbacks wide-mouth cap wouldn't allow me to pick up my pack, remove the cap, and accurately pour water from the camelback without pouring too much and/or spilling the precious commodity.
MSR solved this for me! I now carry the attachment drinking hose along with the 3-in-1 cap and I can swap the two when ready to pour water for cooking without removing the dromedary bag from my pack. I have more pack space available and carry a lighter pack.
I now carry MSR's Dromedary bags exclusively and found nothing else on the market that compares equally.

Bombproof!

By:
November 16, 2007

Strapped on top of, or stashed inside the hull of my Perception kayak, this bag is very versatile. Water previously was hauled in a cheap "collapsible" jug which slid around and began to leak after only a few uses. The 10 litre is more than adequate for an overnight paddle trip. The MSR Drom Bag is well worth the price. I recommend the optional spigot cap in lieu of the three-in-one cap that comes with it though.

MSR 6 liter Dromedary bag

By:
March 17, 2008

MSR has made a great hydration bag that is tough, durable, and well designed. The large opening allows for easy filling and the cap and nipple dispenser seem to be durable (no leaks so far). I also like the grommet and lashing cord system that allows me to tie this bag to the outside of my pack when carrying a lot of gear. At 6 liters it’s a big bag but it fits easiy into the hydration sleeve of my Kelty Redwing 3100. If I don’t want to carry so much water I simply add what I need and roll up the unused part of the bag to save space. One nit pick: the cap and tube connector protrude at least 2 inches from the bag’s surface and interfere somewhat with loading other things in my pack. Overall I rate this product highly and recommend it to anyone who needs a large volume hydration bag.

My personal preference is the 6L. This size does well for the purposes you stated and packs small when not in use. It also uses a 64mm threaded opening that fits most filters, especially the MSR Miniworks EX. This combination is hard to beat. I would also get the MSR Spigot Cap that has an on-off valve, making it super user friendly at camp; just like your kitchen sink at home! The only question I have is whether you want to carry water in your pack, especially in a 40L pack. If this is the case, you might want to get the 4L size.

Excellent Hydration Option

By:
June 2, 2008

The MSR 6 liter bag was the perfect option for a week long hike in the Guadalupe Mountains where water availability is limited. The bag fit nicely in the top of my pack. The perimeter webbing worked great for hanging the bag at camp and securing it in my pack. By the end of our hike the four other hikers I was with decided that the MSR bag would be a part of their hiking gear in the future. I would have to say that if you are looking at the dromedary bag as a hydration option, go ahead and make the purchase, there is nothing else at there that can compare.... Enjoy!!

This is a versatile bag. I bought the 6L bag and it works great for camp water storage. I just hang it from a tree and the spout works good for filling my pot. Now all I need is the 10L for those longer outings.

Good Stuff

By:
June 8, 2009

I have had two sizes of the dromedary for a number of years and am very impressed with the durability and functionability of it. When not in use it rolls up nicely and can be stuffed in your pack and not take up too much room- downside is that it is a bit on the heavy side. Pros are that this is a very versatile piece of equipment- you are able to use it as for water storage, a water bladder, fill it up and use it as a weight or a pillow, it can be used as a hydration system- fill it with snow or sand. The possibilities are endless. Cheap and durable!

big and sturdy

By:
November 6, 2008

I got the 10l.... and it's big. I might get a smaller one to go with it. I can't find anything that really compares to these... the slight addition in weight from other bags seems worth it for the extra durability and functionality (mainly from the grommets and webbing). I wish the opening were more camelbak size than nalgene though. I can fit my hand into my other reservoirs to thoroughly dry them, but not on these... so if I try to do a towel swab, it might get lost in the abyss. the lid is really functional, giving you squirt, pour, and dump options... I think I'll rig a shower for it next summer... seems like it would work well.

Very versatile water bag

By:
June 20, 2006

The MSR Dromedary Bag is a workhorse in the backcountry. I still have the first one I purchased almost 10 years ago, and it is as good as new despite the abuse it has taken on countless backpacking trips. I typically strap it to the outside of my pack - easy to do with the attached nylon webbing that is threaded through the grommets of the bag. The bag has been impervious to sharp branches and rocks and is easy to clean. The "3-way" spout/opening is very convenient. It can be used for drinking, washing, or easy filling. My favorite feature is that the largest possible opening of the bag is the same size as the MSR water filter so that you can attach the Waterworks and filter water directly into the bag, never losing a drop! This is a great hydration bladder.

MSR has a new hydration attachment which is an improvement over the older one. Be careful though. Despite the "360 degree" rotation of the tube, if you don't orient the hydration tube correctly before you tighten it down, there is still a tendency for it to loosen up and spill out.

Great Bag

By:
February 4, 2008

Didn't use this one 2L but bought it after using 6L one. This one is a bit smaller to be used for backpacking. Looked in to lighter red version, but this one is the best. Yes, it may be a bit heavy but with a oz or two comes lots of flexibility. Adding to it valve cap and you can use it hanging from the tree. When not in use takes a little space and can be lashed to backpack in many different ways. Update 07/14/09. Used both 6 and 2 liters for a canyon trip and yet again proven to be really usefull. 6 L used as a camp water holder ether suspended from the rope or on top of the table. This one was outfited with MSR spigot. One bag was enough for all of the Dinner, Tea, and the rest of the needs for 5 people for the evening. Smaller 2 L was for extra water during hiking and was directly placed in backpack. Never leaked or gave any discomfort. After using it for about 2 years no sign of damage or any visible wear. Great product and while not cheap totally reliable and usable.

Worth the space!

By:
April 23, 2009

I have almost all the sizes available of the MSR Dromedary Bags. They are my favorite hydration bags! They hold up to almost anything. I have stepped on them with crampons and dogs run all over them constantly. I have never torn a whole in any of these super rugged bags (I have tried with everything that would possibly occur out in the field other than stabbing it with a knife or throwing it in a fire). I have no complaints about the bags however if you are looking for something lightweight or not as bulky this may not be the bag for you. They take up a little more space than most hydration bags due to the lid system so if you are looking for something small to toss in your day pack you might want to try another product. I give these an A+

By:
November 6, 2008

I used to buy platypus bladders, but they get fatigue cracks and leak. I sat on my friend's bladder (don't remember the brand) and popped it spraying sticky cytomax allover the tent.
The dromedary is fool proof. I've abused my current 2L bag for years and it still doesn't leak.
Here is a tip: the dromedary screw top can be replaced with a standard Nalgene lid.

MSR Dromedary Bag 10 Liter

By:
November 7, 2008

Bag works better than I could have imagined. After 1000+ miles of ridding in my seakayak it works as good as the day I bought it. The best feature on this bag is the dual tips for the cap, you can use the small stream or the medium flow or the release the flood by taking off the big cap. This also allows you to fill it faster than the small opening playtapus style. (Tip: when you fist get the bag or it starts to get slimy inside, put some rock salt inside it and slosh it around until you can't feel the slime. Rinse with fresh water...)

LOVE THESE BAGS!

By:
August 10, 2006

Versatile, tough, convenient, and my filter screws on! I ordered two of these (4 liter) and I'll never order another brand. I have the MSR MiniWorks filter and it screws onto this bag and Nalgene bottles (standard size). The little things make a difference with these Dromedaries - 3 ways to pour water, straps that make it easy to carry back to camp, doesn't leak at all, you can boil or freeze them, and you can set it in the sun to heat for a wonderful shower!

Dromedary - good stuff

By:
July 24, 2006

Excellent, durable, versitale water bags. These are the best, three caps in one - open the spout and hang the bag from a tree and you have "running water" enough to brush your teeth, wash up etc., and it lasts a good while. Unscrew the cap with the spout and you can rapidly fill anything, pots etc. and finally, take off the big cap and you can reach in and dry it out, fill it up, whatever. Dries easliy, I stick a big spatula in it to tent the bag and it dries in a day. Awesome carrying system, easy to use. Water tastes pretty good even after two days at 110 degrees in the desert.

4 L bag is a Backpackers dream

By:
August 26, 2009

This is a great bladder for backpacking. I would highly recommend this over a camelback bladder, as it is extremely durable. The bladder has three water access nozzles build into one that will fit almost any filter situation or drinking flow desire. It could be carried on the exterior of your pack or the interior without worries of a leak. I could also double as a pillow in the evening or a sleeping bag heater (add hot water) for a restful cold night. I would highly recommend the 4 L version of this product.

No more water problems on spring ski tours.

By:
September 1, 2006

I'll just add the fact that when you fill the black MSR bladders with snow and lash em to the top of your pack, or set em in the sun at camp, in a few sunny hours you have water. Works even on cloudy, sometimes near freezing days but takes longer. I often tour for ten or more days and NEVER actively melt snow. In the spring of course.

Get a Grip!

By:
June 10, 2009

I absolutely love my Droms! Not to mention the handle and the ease of use when filling them. When empty it easily stores away. When the source is questionable (chunks and Junk) I stuff my MugMate coffee/tea filter by MSR in my Drom to filter large sediment. It's a tight fit, but thats what you want and it works nicely as a pre-filter! The added webbing on the, around the outside of the newer drom bags has made it convenient to attach to the outside of my pack versus stuffing up and taking up room on the inside of my pack.

Great for Moab on a Motorcycle

By:
October 14, 2009

I just returned from a 10-day road trip to Utah's Canyonlands on my BMW 1200GS motorcycle. I bought two 4-liter MRS Dromedary bags to carry water into the back country on my bike (4 liters = approx 1 gallon). One gallon is the bare minimum that you want to have for a day in the desert, and believe me, we used our water, getting a refill out of the Green River with a compatible MSR water filter (which required continuous scrubbing due to the heavy silt in the Green).

The MSR Dromedary bags, lashed to the tail section of my bike, performed their job perfectly. And they took a beating too. Riding over miles of sand and rock challenged the strength of these bags, particularly from an abrasive standpoint. They held up, and held my water, and are ready for another trip. I recommend this product as it beats carrying a large container due to it's carrying flexibility.

Bad after-taste, stings throat, lingers.

By:
June 29, 2009

I washed this MSR dromedary bag with dishwashing-liquid, and rinsed it very, thoroughly, repeatedly. I filled it with water. The bag left a bad, after-taste that stung the back of my throat, and lingered. The bag's innner-coating is leaching into the water. I felt the inside of the bag with my finger; it is a rough surface, meaning the inner-coating is so thin that it conforms to the rough outer fabric; suggesting it is a spray-on coating. It looks like a spray-on inner coating. Someone write the FDA.

Instead I bougt an insulated, Camelbak-brand "Unbottle"- 70-oz., and removed the bladder and inserted a Platypus-brand 2-liter, roll-up, bottle with screw-on top. So I could use it as an insulated canteen. I had to buy an inexpensive, insulated water-bottle holder ($10) to cut out a 3-inch-circle to sew over the space left by removing the Camelbak’s bladder. Required a little sewing. Works great. Kept my water cold in California-summer. Velcro opening.

Awesome

By:
July 12, 2009

These droms are nothing short of the definition of "awesome". I just came back from a 2-week backpacking trip out west. Me and 7 other of my closest friends hiked in the cold temps of northern Colorado, then drove down to the southern deserts of Utah and backpacked an area called Coyote Gulch. Throughout the extreme heat and rugged terrain, these droms worked wonders and never failed on us. We hung them in trees and rested them on rough, sandy rocks. Therefore, there was never a dull moment for these essential items. All I'm saying is, is that these were awesome to have and are definitely reliable.

Great back up

By:
April 6, 2006

I bought for a desert canyons backpack trip. I was glad I did. It rained so the water available was murky for filtering one day. I'd suggest rinsing it a few times to clean out the initial material taste. I laid it flat across the top of my back to keep it from sloshing and the pack evenly weighted. Once in camp, set it on a slightly angled rock and it pours right out. There are three flow adjustments- a small nozzle in the camp (super slow & precise), a heavy faucet flow if you take the nozzle off and a dump it all out fast flow if you remove the main filling spout. The smallest nozzle is the easiest to use but you need patience.
