Discovering certain types of stowaways—like your neighbor's annoying kid—amidst your pile of camping gear in the truck wouldn't be good. The MRS Alpine Stowaway Pots however, are the good kind of stowaway. The Alpine Stowaway Pots have a hinged handle that flips over the fitted lid and locks it in place, so these pots are easy to handle and easy to pack. These scratch-and dent-resistant stainless steel pots stand up to seasons of camping. Choose one size for simple meals, or a combination of different sized Alpine Stowaway Pots for long car-camping or kayaking trips.
Bottom Line: These MSR Alpine Pots are a helpful kind of stowaway.
They are great for storing things. It's a bit heavy for backpacking, but if you get the smallest one, it might not be so bad. It's enough for boiling water for those freeze-dried food packs.
These pots are not made to stack, but rather be a standalone option. Many backcountry users require only one pot, particularly to boil water with, and therefore do not need multiple stacking pots.
If you are interested in buying a stainless steel stackable cookset, I would go with the MSR Alpine Gourmet. It uses the same materials, but has multiple pots that do stack.
The Stowaway Pots are made for years of heavy use. Their stainless steel nature and solid construction give them top-of-class durability. They are premium in every sense of the word. The stainless steel material also gives limited non-stick qualities and good cooking performance, unlike titanium. They have remained on MSR's lineup of cookware for so long because they simply work well.
This dude is Heavy. If you are car camping, go for it, great little pot. If you are a backpacker, spend the extra doe and buy titanium. Got it for my father in law, and he loves it. However it did replace a huge pot he always drug around.
No these do not nest. I'd recommend getting the largest size you need and fill it with whatever other bowls, plates, utensils and cooking gear you want and lock them in.
I have a 1.1L and a 1.6L and they do NOT nest. These are great pots and I love mine. Can't say about the other sizes, but I repeat, a 1.1 will NOT nest inside a 1.6. Bummer.
MSR's pots nest, they know that you like to keep things small when loading a pack.I think you're probably looking for this set:http://www.backcountry.com/store/CAS0394/MSR-Alpine-Gourmet-Cookset.html
I have the 1.6L and I use it strictly for car camping. I couple this with 2 msr stainless steel bowls and it fits perfectly (no rattle) with plenty of room to spare for utensils, food or anything else you may need. I like that it locks together tight so that you have the option of storing food away from the critters. Certainly not lightweight, but I never expected it to be.
I originally bought the 1.1L for backpacking. The pot is nearly indestructable, cooks great, and the locking lid will protect anything you put inside the pot. But, unless you're car camping or have hired a sherpa, I say spend the extra $$$ on titanium. Titanium is way lighter, just as strong, and cooks just as well. I do still use mine for car camping, but with car camping, I could just as easily use the pots already sitting in my kitchen cabinet.
Its ok. I love that the handle flips over the lid and holds it in place. Good for boiling water but that's about it. Food sticks really easy to these and to the bottom if it gets too hot.
I got the 775ml (next to smallest) pot about 4 years ago. Yes, stainless steel is heavier than aluminum (which leaves a bad taste on food) and titanium (which is really expensive), but this pot is bullet-proof plus I can stow my MSR Pocket Rocket inside it along with some aluminum foil (wind screen) and matches. Then I can lock it all up and forgetaboutit. I took away one star for the weight but I still love this pot.
This is a nice, well made stainless steel pot. As others note, it is rather heavy, as any stainless steel cookware is. I don't mind carrying one for a night or two, but for extended backpacking I'd go with something lighter. The handle flips over the pot and locks it in place and will hold a small stove if you do choose to hike with it.
