Pull on the Mad Rock Con-flict Strap Climbing Shoe, crank down the hook-and-loop straps, and proceed to float your project. Thanks to Mad Rock’s X-Tension System and concave, dual-density sole, even the tiniest footholds will feel like bucket jugs. The 3D molded heel cup and toe covering made from Science Friction rubber let you latch on to toe and heel hooks, and the padded mesh tongue wicks moisture and adds comfort, even with a performance fit. Simply put, the Con-flict helps you elevate your game regardless of what your discipline is.
Bottom Line: Resolve your climbing shoe conflicts.
get them in your street shoe size and you'll be set, I got them in a 10 and I usually wear an 11, and they actually hurt too bad to bad to wear more than a couple of mins. My feet still hurt 2 days later.
Awesome looking shoe, awesome toe rubber, and love the color scheme. That being said, this shoe has much to be desired. Not to say that it isn't a decent shoe, it is, but when I decided to take these for a ride, I expected much more.
I had the FiveTen Jet7s before these and loved them, but the one thing that it lacked was decent toe rubber - on big toe hooks the Jet7s provided very little layering, so it sometimes hurt when you do hard toe hooks. I saw these and was impressed by the design, especially the ribbed toe, and decided to give these a try.
Rubber - The rubber feels like plastic. Despite Mad Rock giving you a sample grit paper to test out how sticky their Science Friction is, it wasn't all that sticky.
Heel - Because the same rubber is applied to the heel, I had a hard time sticking small heel hooks. Even juggy heel hooks feel very insecure. It could be because these shoes have a wider than usual heel compared to my Jet7s, and I have a narrow heel, but I didn't trust my heel hooks to hold at all and in fact slip off quite often. The tread design is a nice concept, but without a soft enough rubber, the treads won't flex and grab right.
Toe - The one thing that shined on these shoes. The ribbed design and rubber covering your little piggies is awesome in every right. No exaggeration here, it felt like I could overhanging toe small jibs with these, and it definitely provided enough thickness to not scream in pain when you're toeing hard.
About the same. I had them both in the same size, and wouldn't recommend any up-or-down sizing. Expect the conflict to be a little less comfortable at first, as it is more built-up around the toebox and will break in a bit more slowly.
Quick background: I've been climbing 15+ years I've used these and previous incarnations of the Con-Flict at: Fontainbleau, Squamish, The Valley and Toulomne, Hueco Tanks, Bishop and many other areas. Hardest send v12 I focus on bouldering but do sport, trad, off-widths, cracks, slabs, you name it I've climbed exclusively in Mad Rocks for the last 7 years but demo many of the new shoes from all brands.
Performance: These are the most powerful shoe I have ever worn. They have incredible edging power and still smear like a mad man. They work well in very cold conditions and extreme heat (not that I want to be climbing when it's over 50 degrees!)
Versatility: They are a well rounded shoe. Full heel and toe rubber with ribs offer superior hooking. The 3 strap velcro enclosure keeps your heel snug and sound. I wear these shoes for every style of climbing except thin cracks and off-widths.
Durability: The durability is medium to high. Mad Rocks may not have the legendary durability of Boreal but they will destroy La Sportiva, and they have hands down the best rubber I've ever climbed on. They don't melt in the heat or freeze up on those 40 degree winter days!
Really good fit, versatile training and performance shoe.
Toe is pointed enough for precise footwork, and the shoe is flexible enough to get a lot of contact for smears. Rubber strips across the top of the forefoot actually hold well on toe-hooks.
Really comfortable for the level of performance its designed for.
these new con series shoes are great. i love them. i used to climbing the hookers by mad rock but these are wild. the new rubber is like glue. they will stick to what ever they touch. they need almost NO wearing in and they're feeling like socks. they just hug your feet like they a tight sock and perform awesome.
When I got these shoes, problems I'd been working on for weeks because I couldn't hold an edge or keep a toe on all went, one by one- and problems I'd been too intimidated to start became my new problems. If I could have just one pair of gym/sport/comp shoes, these might be the pair- they simply stick on the little edges with power to spare and the heel cup is bomber.
The concave toe (with a thin sole between the raised rubber bits) does stretch a bit and make this shoe smear tolerably, but I found that those inner edges would sometimes catch, or (while foot-jamming in cracks) roll that edge inside out and deform the thin sole between the built-up edges- leading to the early demise of an otherwise outstanding shoe.
If you're looking for a comp/gym/bouldering shoe, these perform amazingly well (especially for their price). I found them a bit uncomfortable for multi-pitch climbing, and entirely too fragile for jamming. Stay on those edges.
The Con-Flicts are awsome! They are a great looking shoe that performs well. I have noticed my heel hooks and toe hooks are much more effective with these shoes! The pointed toe in the front is great for overhanging walls too! The Con-Flicts have a comfortable, padded tongue and seem to wear well. I like the fit and the velcro holds tight. I am hard on my shoes but the Con-Flicts can take it!
The Conflict is a great shoe for technical sport climbing, bouldering, and competition climbing. The toe is perfect for small footholds with its concave shape and sharp edge. The toe box also provides good support for vertical face climbs, but the rubberized top-side makes for excellent toe-hooks. The only downside is that the rubber on the toe is quite thick, so for those who like a thin sole to better feel the footholds, this might not be the right shoe. The heel cup fits great, and is awesome for heel hooking.
One word: Buy It Right Now! Works on scary slab to super steep jug fests and every crimp in between. If your nunchuck skills cant get you up your project - the Con-Flicts will!
