Mountain Hardwear Downtown Vest - Women's - 2007

The Mountain Hardwear Women's Downtown Vest insulates with 650-fill goose down, keeping you toasty in frigid conditions without steaming you like a lobster when the sun comes out. Layer a waterproof shell easily over this form-fitting vest for core warmth on ski days. A Yeti fleece lining adds an element of coziness the Abominable Snow Woman herself would envy, and wavy stitching gives the Downtown Vest unique style at the lodge. Stash this puffy vest in its included stuff sack for compact storage in your winter pack.

Bottom Line: Get downtown style and backcountry warmth with this Mountain Hardwear vest.

great vest

By:

Love the vest.Could not decide between The North Face Nuptse or this one, so got them both. This one is a little more dressy in the pattern. Fits well and sleeveholes are fine -not tight at all. Love the look and the fur lining is so soft - great vest.

Down Vests

By:
August 19, 2008

After trying on about every down vest at Backcountry.com, this is the vest I decided on because: I liked the fit, the price, and (bonus) it is machine-washable.
The fit is quite snug, which is what I was looking for: I wanted to avoid that burly look down can give you. (If you have a curvy figure, check out Patagonia's Down Vest-- it actually fits my petite, curvy frame alot better, but I couldn't justify the price tag). The fabric has a nice hand (not as soft as The North Face, though), and has worn very well. I've had my vest over a year now, and have ran it through the washing machine multiple times now. The first time I was REALLY nervous, but the tag SAID it was machine washable, so, okay. It did take a really long time to dry (could be the humid climate I live in), and I did have to separate some down clumps by hand, but it worked perfectly. Love this vest. One con: the arm holes are a touch on the snug side. If you have bigger arms, this will likely be a problem for you.

Hourglass hot!

By:
September 30, 2008

The shape of the vest is a wonder to behold! I, like many of the other reviewers, have tried on a million down vests, and this by far is the best overall. Patagonia's is *almost* a close second except for a medium is a little tight across the bust and is too big at the hip, which, for a not-real-busty gal with decent hips, are not the usual fit issues that I have.

I haven't had the occasion to wear mine just yet, but have modeled it for myself a lot (see review title). I really like Mtn. Hardwear outerwear - a lot.

Flattering and warm, unusual looking vest

By:
October 26, 2007

Looking for a down vest that fits close to the body for more efficient warmth, I picked this one for it's feminine cut and cozy fleece lining. The length comes to the hips, which I think is just right for warmth and to balance the puffy look of down. I wear a Small to Medium usually, (I'm a 34A) and I went for the Small here because I planned to wear the vest over a t-shirt-weight layer. It works like this, but it's definitely too small to wear over a sweater. Size up if you want to wear more layers underneath. Also, the arm holes are really small, which keeps the warmth in, but they also feel a bit tight, so keep that in mind if you're between sizes. It's more of a cute style-y vest than a technical mountaineering piece. All in all, I find it a very flattering and functional piece.

Mountain Hdwr Downtown down vest

By:
June 9, 2008

My son from Montana gave me a brown one for Christmas. I loved it! It was great - alone around town or in the car or under my jacket on cold Mammoth days - nicely contoured - not too bulky - fit is fab. I bought another one in black and gave one to my daughter-in-law for her b'day this month because she coveted mine! I use it at the beach on cold mornings as well. Very adaptable and multifunctioning! Definitely five stars!!

Returned It

By:
September 16, 2008

Can't imagine that I am shaped so differently from all the other reviewers, but I found this vest to be boxy and unflattering and the arm holes too small. I'm sure it would do its job, but it looked terrible on me so I returned it.

Soft, cozy and warm

By:
November 19, 2007

The inside fleece lining on top of all that goose down keeps me toasty warm even on frosty mornings. And the low profile non-bulky fit is perfect under my softshell when the temperature drops more. I was at first concerned that the arm holes were a bit snug, but they're flexible and the tighter fit makes sense to keep all the warm air inside. You will not be disappointed with this vest.

if you wear layers...beware!

By:
February 1, 2008

Like all the reviews say, yes, this vest is super cute and the cut is flattering but listen to those of us who are saying that the arm holes are just way too tight. If you have any intention of layering more than a t-shirt and want the vest to fit perfect..guess what? The arms are strangling! I'm pretty small and originally bought an xs. The fit was absolutely perfect except for the strangling arm holes. I went ahead and exchanged it for a sm and now the shoulders fall over my shoulders. Whoever thought of those cinched armpits should be fired! Sorry to say, I'm exchanging again and going for another brand.

Armholes too tight

By:
October 26, 2007

I really liked the color and the fabric but the armholes were way too small. They are sort of gathered, I guess to keep the warmth in. Could have tried the small instead of the XS but decided to try a different vest instead.

Buy one size up.

By:
December 27, 2007

The design is nice and slim. It is best to buy one size up as the arm holes are quite tight. I had to return and change for a bigger size in order to feel comfortable.

Warm, Comfy, and Cute

By:
January 2, 2008

After an extensive and disappointing search of vests from The North Face, I realized that they don't make down vests for women that have a larger chest. Then I started searching your site and found the Mountain Hardware down vest. I was pleased how well it fit me in the chest and waist. There is also a soft grey liner. The vest has 650 fill and it is perfect with a turtleneck for ice skating or in and out of stores. I highly recommend it.

Bought this for my wife and she loves it. The fit of the vest is perfect and she told me it keeps her nice and warm just the way she likes it and I can say it looks great.

Ultra comfy!

By:
June 5, 2008

Great vest. The soft fleece lining adds that extra cozy feel and is particularly good to snuggle into around the collar. The arm hole size in the medium has plenty of room for layering.

The only problem I have encountered is sizing - I purchased a medium (matched my measurements to the sizing chart at an 8) and really think a size smaller would give more of a snug/shapely fit. The Medium is still slightly roomy even with a big jumper/layers underneath. Have so far been able to track down a small in this vest anywhere! So buyer beware - if you measure out at a size 8, go for the S and not the M. Otherwise comfy, good looking and warm.
