Mountain Hardwear Monkey Man Fleece Jacket - Men's - 2007

Mountain Hardwear made the Men's Monkey Man Jacket with unbelievably silky, plush fleece. Ridiculously soft, in fact. Besides feeling must-pet-this-all-day soft, this fleece jacket is super warm, lightweight, and compressible, which makes it great for hiking and camping trips. The versatility and breathability prompted Everest guru, Ed Viesturs, to bring a Monkey Man Jacket on his last Annapurna trip. Obviously not windproof, the Monkey Man will be chilly in biting (East Coast) winds. Just throw on a weatherproof shell, and you have a layering system that's tough to beat.

Bottom Line: Seriously, are jackets allowed to be this soft?

Best Wamth:Weight Ratio ever

The way insulation works is to trap warmth in something manufacturers call "Dead Air Space" or DAS. In essence, the more trapped dead air, the warmer the garment. The Monkey Man fleece construction traps air very well, especially under a shell jacket, and is VERY light for the warmth it offers. But where I think this jacket really excels is its ability to vent heat and sweat during activity. I often use the Monkey Man as an outer layer (see image)- even in light snow and wind- due to the breathability of the fleece, and I can therefore better regulate my body temperature. The new generation of Monkey Man fleece is more subject to "pilling" than the older version, and subsequently compresses down in the elbows and under the pack straps after a few weeks of use- but this decrease in durability is still very worth it due to the jacket's overall performance, and I end up buying at least 1 new one every year. The Monkey Man jacket is definitely a MUST HAVE item for all seasons in the outdoors- but especially as an insulating layer during cold weather activities. 5 stars.

Monkey Luv

I originally thought this jacket might be too froo-froo for me, but after trying it on and wearing it for a few days, it has migrated to the front & center. It is a nice balance of warmth, comfort and weight, plus it works well on its own or as a layer.

I have a question about sizing on this jacket.

I'm 5'4" 130# athletic build and normally end up with a small in most companies sizing schemes like my old tnf mountain light (before they sold out!). However, I have a MH Alchemy that I wear a medium and it fits perfect. Perfect athletic cut, but still slightly roomy enough to layer underneath - a bit tight with a 300 weight fleece underneath but it works ok.

Should I be looking at a small or a medium in the monkey man jacket? I would primarily wear either a sweatshirt or heavier polypro underneath it at most and would like to be able to wear the fleece under a shell. Optimally, it would still fit more tailored like my medium sized alchemy shell.

Also, where are these monkey man jackets made? I purchased my alchemy ~4-5 years ago now and it is made in the usa.

Thanks for your questions. I would say that you would probably be most comfortable in a medium. As for where they are made, I will have to check and get back to you. They are made with a Polartec Thermal Pro Fabric which is a US company but I am pretty sure they are made over seas. Hope this info helps!

This jacket is great! The Monkey Man provides you with instant warmth even in the chilliest weather (so long as there's no wind). Speaking of wind, with all of the complaining people did here, I was expecting the slightest breeze to freeze me but this jacket does fairly well in light breezes. I'm definitely going to be buying another one as soon as this one wears out. My only modification to the current design would be to add thumb holes like MH did on the 1/4 zip pullover version.

This fleece is great. It is warm and though it doesn't do well at all in the wind a shell combo is the best bet to go with. I am 6'00", 180 and I got the large. It fits great and has been keeping the chill away in the mountains. This is a must have, especially if you don't mind using a shell.

Great Fleece!!

By:
August 23, 2009

Bought this after wearing one of my friend's. It is a great fleece jacket and is super warm, definitely the warmest fleece I've ever worn. It is not windproof whatsoever of course, but just throw on a shell and you have one very warm shell/fleece combo. I use it mostly to ski (with a shell), but even then I typically don't wear it if it's above 25, it's too warm. Also I would size up, I'm about 5'9" and 150lbs and first bought a medium which was a bit tight in the shoulder area, went with a large which fits much better. Definitely an athletic cut.

Great jacket

By:
March 10, 2009

I'll add my $0.02: This jacket is warm, soft, and goes with me skiing, climbing, to the bars, or anywhere else I can take it.

Here's a trick for getting rid of the piling and matting that will happen after wearing this jacket enough: Take one of those pet brushes - the ones with lots of the thin wire bristles - and brush your Monkey every now and then. This'll restore the loft and makes it really soft again, just like day 1. It doesn't damage the fabric, either.

Ideal for Zero-Wind Excursions

Most comfortable jacket I've ever owned. Provides plenty of warmth. Wind cuts right through it, so I pack a light-weight non-breathable outer-layer for when the wind picks up. I pack a Montane Featherlight since it is windproof and packs down to half the size of a soda can.

Don't Wash It.

By:
December 12, 2008

Pros: Super light, incredible warmth to weight ratio, warm when wet, dries reasonably quickly, packs down to nothing in a compression sack.

Cons: Washing it totally messed with the high pile fleece - it lost a lot of loft (warmth). Just don't wash it (you're gonna smell on the mountain anyway). If you're a serious clean-o, handwash with a very mild soap.

Monkey Man Fleece Jacket

By:
November 28, 2008

The name Monkey Man Fleece Jacket intrigued me, so I bought one. Now I am about to buy a couple more. Yes, it fits tight if your gut is extended, and mine is a bit, but I'm still 6' x 190 lbs, 44 shoulder and 36 gut (aggggh!) thanks to my more sedentary life style these days (I'm older than dirt). However at that size a Large fits fine for an under layer....snug but just right...with a nice drop down at the back side. If you want blousy around a large middle, get a size larger. However, the normal right size for you will be the right size for you in most cases. It is warm under a shell, and it breaths well, just open the pit zips on the shell. I would have loved to have had one of these when I was riding horses daily under a short barn coat or the de rigor Comfy Brand down jacket...bending over (you do that a lot with horses) or mounting and dismounting exposes your backside a bit, and sucks in February. This jacket is the cure, under either. As it is now, I diddle around with photogrpahy in out of the way mountain places and this jacket is the perfect first layer under a long waterproof shell (many pockets for gear), and under a middle layer of a down snap front liner when cold enough. Best part is perhaps the zippers which can be operated gloves on, like most Mtn Hdwe stuff.

In short, you don't have to be a delightfully crazy & 20 something adreneline junky (any more) like many of the BC.com contributors I've read. It really is a good piece of gear for ordinary Joe's whose crazy days are a bit in the past.

Warm, great as a mid layer. Works fine as an outerlayer but is not meant to block wind. Trim, athletic fit. If you want to put more than 1 or 2 layers underneath the jacket, size up. Very soft and visually intriguing exterior is highly tactile. If you don't like people asking if they can pet you, the monkeyman is not for you. thixophobiacs beware.

Very Warm But...

By:
March 12, 2008

I bought this fleece and tried it out after reading many good reviews of this product. After trying out, there were too many negitives of this product that caused me to return it. The fit was very form fitting but very tight in places like under the armpits and around the neck. The medium was definantly not the same medium fit as the other products of Mt. hardware. I actually went to another store to try and another medium and IT was different and LESS tight but still uncomfortable. I also tried a large but it was too long all around(5'6" 155lbs.)The material WAS soooo soft but it is not durable. I was alway checking my elbows after resting on a table to see if I had worn away the material. After teaching snowboard lessons in 4 hours rain, my Backcountry shift soft shell(great product) finally soaked through and wet the monkey man fleece and although uncomfortable I was still warm. In between lessons I changed to my Arcteryx Sidewinder Goretex jacket and the warmth came back alive and actually dried by the end of my 10 hour day. After I got home the fleece matted together and looked like a wet dog even when dry and would not separate apart. I didn't want to look like a wet monkey so I returned it and preformd a very easy exchange for a Pantagonia R2. I really like the R2, although it is not as warm as my monkey. Maybe the R3 will be closer to the warmth? I also miss the Extra large pockets on the monkey.

A skeptic no more!

By:
February 11, 2008

Well, I have been burned by MH's sizing before (I'm 6'0"/165 lbs and it's all cut too short for me in the torso), but with rave reviews and the closeout on last year's model going on, I gave it one more shot. Boy, am I glad that I did! The jacket has a distinctive look with the "monkey phur" that may put some off. However, it is incredibly warm! Also, the warmth-to-weight ratio is great, this thing is so light and fits the body so well I forget that I'm wearing it; it stretches in all the right places. One thing: the cuffs are made with stretch material, and don't seem very durable...but only time will tell. As far as the sizing goes, I always go with Medium from TNF, Patagonia, and Marmot, but I got a Large here. Fits like a dream!!

Just Get One Arready!

By:
February 23, 2009

Thermal Pro/Monkey Phur (MH's proprietary name) is the warmest fleece period. The only jacket i've ever put on that provided instant -- and i mean INSTANT warmth! Amazing! Have the TNF Denali Thermal and love that too, it's just as good, if not better, but sadly no longer made...so get this one. I'm 5'10", 205lbs, size 44 and bought an XL. It's roomy but not baggy, and doesn't look baggy, even though in hindsight i really should've gotten a large for a more streamlined fit. But still it fits well enough under a slim shell. And a shell you'll need because it stops NO wind, but the flip side is it's great breathability for the tremendous warmth it generates. Personally, i think it insulates better than Primaloft. I also like the length -- sits just below the waist, which is key because it doesn't have a waistcord cinch. Super lightweight too. Buy it and you won't want to take it off, like ever.

Great jacket, but don't expect it to cut the wind

By:
April 29, 2008

I love my monkey man jacket! It's incredibly soft and fuzzy - people will be asking to pet you everywhere you go. The long-fiber fleece makes the jacket stand out from the crowd and functionally it adds greatly to the warmth of the jacket without adding much weight. I've also found that the jacket compresses quite nicely in a compression sack making it great for backpacking trips. As stated in the product description, this jacket has absolutely no wind-proofing. The plus side to this is that it's extremely breathable and great for layering under a shell on windier days - the main reason I purchased the piece. My only other gripe is that the long fiber fleece gets matted in places of wear, especially under the elbows where I am often leaning on things. The fleece fluffs back out after being washed, it just looks a little funny when it's matted down. All in all, the monkey man is a great piece and is available at a price that won't break your bank. As long as you have a shell to throw over it or a separate jacket altogether for windy days, I'd highly recommend picking one up!

BEST FLEECE EVER!!!

By:
June 15, 2009

Seriously, I was worrying about the jacket looking funny. Maybe because the name and its definitely different than other fleece fabrics. I originally had the North Face Denali jacket, but returned it because the sleeves were sooooo wide and not fitted at all. I ordered this and immediately fell in love with it. Not only is it the softest jacket i have ever tried on but it is extremely warm. Do not hesitate, trust me get this jacket if you need a fleece. The shipping was amazingly fast. If i could, I would give it 10 stars! Oh and for those who are complaining about the wind resistance, ITS NOT MADE FOR THAT! if its really that cold and windy, get a shell over it, soft shell or hardshell, it doesn't matter it will fit perfect underneath.

I don't know if I got a dud but mine is not particularly soft. I've felt one in the store and it was definitely softer than mine. My only other complaints are that over time the fur gets matted easily and doesn't seem to regain it's fluff no matter what you do, and the cuffs pill badly almost immediately. That said, it is warm (unless it's windy) and comfortable to move around in. I don't regret buying it, but after having it for a year I don't think it's really worth the full retail price.

Soft and Warm

By:
November 28, 2008

Let me start by saying that I bought the jacket to mainly be used as my daily coat for the many Ohio days ranging from 30-50F. I had read that the wind protection was not very good, but I have actually found it to be better than any other fleece I've owned. I went with the Sapphire color which is actually more of a royal blue than a purple. The fit is more snug than a North Face, but still very comfy. It has kept me warm so far this year and I plan on layering it under my ski shell as we start getting more of the white stuff in this region.
The added bonus/drawback to this coat is the attention it gets. I can't tell you how many times I've been out and had people start "petting" me because it is so soft. Its definitely something that the ladies love! Watch out though, I've had a few theft attempts on it too and there are other reviews with the same report. Everyone wants it as soon as they feel it! My girlfriend likes using it on road trips as a pillow and I snuggled up to it when I was sick this past week.

As a truck driver in the Lake Michigan area where cold and damp are related, I am in and out of the cab all day. I am tired of pealing layers every time I go indoors our just out of the cab for a few minutes. Finally someone invented a soft lightweight jacket that does not irritate my neck or restrict my arm movement like the canvas jackets do. I usually keep my jacket on all day. You dont usually see a lot of these jackets in this area, so I get lots of comments about my jacket. Is it worth the money, no hesitation -YES. Would I buy another? I already bought my wife and daughter one. They both love it, it keeps them warm. Because I wear mine all day, does it absorb any oder? none that I have noticed. Does it resist stains, I bought black, haven't noticed any except spilled ketchup thats cleans up easily. I zip it up all the way to my chin when I ride my motorcycle.... wonderful! To undo the fuzzballs, treat it with waterproofing, and then throw it in the drier. The mild heat undoes the fibers and makes it look new again.

After the year the pile of the flease is not as mated as a thought it would be. I got the burnt orange color on sale. It's teh ugliest color ever, which is great, becasue nobody wants to steal my warm flease fromme. The cuffs are interesting the way runs up the inside of the wrist for about three or four inches. I had a set against it at first, but the grip on my wrist is soft and flexable, yet has a great seal that keeps the warm air in and cold air out. The cuffs work really well.

there is no doubt about the monkey man's ability to keep you warm. bundled under its plush, super-soft fleece is happiness found.

unfortunately, the monkey man seems to run small. i was caught directly between the L and the XL. i ended up going with the XL primarily because of sleeve length. it fits great in the arm & shoulder, but it is loose fitting around the torso & it's a bit long at the waist. which is a bummer.

other than the sizing quirks, this is a great fleece that packs well too.

Build quality is good. Nothing is wearing out prematurely (after 2 months).

As others have said, the fit is funny through the torso. I'm not the most 'athletic' in shape, but pretty skinny by american standards. I'd fit into the medium but it was a little tight across the stomach so I went with a large. I've got enough room to pull my hands into the sleeves now, and fits just a little lumpy.

It also washed nicely. I was worried about the fur getting broken down somehow but it still looks good as new.

May 5, 2009

This is a great no-frills jacket. I have an older model (have had for about 6+ years) and even after countless hikes, camping trips and washings, it's still soft, resilient and very warm.

Great Fleece

By:
May 6, 2009

Very warm, very light and oh so soft. I've had mine two years now and it's held up pretty decent. It breathes better than any other fleece period, and when the weather gets real nasty put a shell on and you are invincible. This jacket will mat down on areas that are exposed to constant pressure. This is the best fleece for your money. This was my first piece of MH gear and they have yet to disappoint me.

Amazing Jacket

By:
November 28, 2007

This jacket is amazing, but be warned if you wear it inside it feels like there is a heater inside. The jacket does great on cool to even cold days with no wind. Its my only real coat up at school and it can get to bellow zero. With an added hoody it still gets the job done. However its not a wind breaker. Cold air goes through this jacket like it is it's job. The fit and cut are comfortable. (and I'm a little squishy in the middle). Its super light and can be squished down to an ittybitty little size (for a jacket) if you wana stow it in a pack. I have had the jacket for about a year now and it has held up fairly well. The jacket is still very warm and most of the fleece is still as fleecey as the day I got it. I highly recommend it.

My FAVORITE jacket

By:
April 24, 2008

This is my favorite of all the many jackets I own. My wife kept stealing it so much I had to buy her one of her own. The jacket is great in that when it's cold it insulates but it's not stuffy at all when it warms up making it excellent for everything from hiking to wearing in town to see a movie. It's also great looking. Be warned it has no, zip, zero, nil wind resistance so if it's going to be even a little windy grab a shell on your way out the door. For me the fit is absolutely perfect (6'0 170lbs, size L monkey man).

Lovin' it.

By:
December 1, 2008

I've wanted one of these for awhile now and finally managed to afford it (the one year when they get just as trendy as the denali fleece) and so far I love it. Sizing was a big issue I read about, but it fits me like a glove. I'm 6'1" ~155 lbs and it's close to the skin but not suffocating. It came down to this one and the Patagonia R4 (I think that's right) and this won out for price. I have taken it into sub freezing temperatures and it plus a shell was perfect. Throw a wool 3 crew under it and you are toasty warm. It looks pretty sweet too...

As comfortable as they get!

By:
July 13, 2009

I've worn it as the the only coat on many occasions when it's well below zero and still stayed warm...which is unreal considering its a fleece. It is so comfortable and form fitting. It fits tight at the right places making is very easy to use as a base coat when your wearing layers. My girlfriend wore out her first(now for outdoors and sleeping in) and is on her second one (for everyday in town use) already....I think she wanted another color and that was her excuse. She wears it ALL the time! I think it is a weird coat because you are ALWAYS the perfect temperature.

Going Ape for Monkey Man

By:
December 5, 2007

This jacket is awesome - sooooo soft. Only con I can see is that it does not block cold wind, but you can easily add a shell for maximum performance. I assure you that you will be the 'rage' when folks see you wearing this jacket coz it looks GREAT. Also, follow everyone else's advice (and mine now) and size up 1 size. I am typically an XL, but I ordered XXL due to the aforementioned comments, and I am glad I did - it fits perfectly.

Blue Monkey Fur

By:
April 8, 2009

I bought this jacket to replace my fleece and fell in luv with the Monkey Fur. It's much warmer than a fleece, and it does protect one from the wind much better than expected. I use it for climbing, skiing, and casual wear around town. In stronger winds I throw a Windstopper/Rain jacket over it and I'm golden. I don't understand what people are complaining about, but you do have to pay attention to the care label. The only problem I had was trying to hand pick the dry grass and seeds out of it after laying on the ground. It's now my number one.

there really isnt a specific shell designed for the monkeyman, the jacket is designed to work with a variety of shells as a layer underneath- it does not zip in at all. You can find nice mountain hardwear shells if this is your brand.

Any lighterweight shells would work great with the Monkey Man. By "made for" do you mean zip-in? If that is the case then very few of our shells have zip-in compatibility. This jacket is meant to layer under any shell you choose. Hope this helps!-------------------I would recommend something like the patagonia houdini. It weighs nothing, is windproof, and packs inside your pocket. The two of them together make a great lightweight system.~mattRemember that two zips is warmer than one. So don't bother looking for a zip in shell unless you really want the convenience.

My New Favorite Fleece

By:
January 7, 2009

I'm 6'1", 190lbs, fairly wide chest and neck and this jacket (large) fits like a glove. And the feel? It may sound corny but I'll be damned if I don't smile everytime I put this jacket on. It's just ridiculously comfortable and...well...fuzzy.

Have been using an Arc'teryx Maverick jacket for layering under my softshell and the Monkey Man, in comparison, layers equally as well. Only slight issue is that the Monkey Man feels a good deal warmer...which isn't necessarily a bad thing. The Monkey Man is also, surprisingly, somewhat wind resistant.

The jacket material felt great and it really did keep me warm but the sizing is not consistent with other Mountain Hardwear products. I have the Windstopper jacket, and a large fits me perfectly (I am 6 feet 190 pounds) but the Monkey Man jacket large was a bit too small in the shoulders and chest. If you are ordering and are on the fence between sizes you should consider getting a size larger.

Monkey Man Jacket

By:
January 7, 2008

The jacket is very comfortable and the soft, fluffy fleece makes you want to take it to bed with you. So far, very good insulator by itself in a strong wind and cold weather, but even better with a shell. One thing I didn't like was when wearing a shoulder strap seatbelt, it leaves a smashed fleece line across the jacket where the belt was contacting the jacket. I only climbed a couple of small trees while wearing the jacket and didn't have a craving for bananas. Go figure.

Pet my monkey..Really, it's that soft.

By:
January 16, 2008

Honestly, I can't say enough good things about this jacket. Don't disregard it just because it's not windproof. This Jacket does an awesome job of blocking out the wind on its own.

I ski a lot. With a shell, It does an amazing job of keeping me warm, but not hot. It breathes just as I had hoped. I have found that I can wear this all day on the slopes if i wanted to, even at night when it dips below freezing.

The length of the jacket is spot on. I am a Medium, and it hangs below the belt and it fits right to my waist. not so tight that it bunches with i move, but its not all loose and flowing either. Not to short, but not too long. The sleeves are also perfect. the cuffs are stretch, and i like that.

I live on a college campus and it's great for walks in between classes in the middle of winter. The fuzziness does take its liking to falling snow, but it dries really quick and you can't feel any moisture. But It is sooo soft. I really love getting into it every morning. The only thing I am worried about is the Phyur getting matted..but seriously, it doesn't matter.

You cannot go wrong with this jacket. The picture really doesn't do justice. This jacket looks and feels amazing.10X better than any other fleece.

I had a dream where I was wearing snowpants made out of monkey phyur. People called me monkey butt. Now THAT is an idea.

"can I pet it?"

By:
November 28, 2008

Awesome jacket, best I've ever had. I wear it to school all the time and it easily compresses into small spaces in my backpack among books and binders. It is very very very warm/soft and I use it as a pillow on my desk. The chest pocket is great because I can fit my glasses case in it and zip it up. The wind really does cut through it, but all you need to do is wear a knit sweater or hoodie underneath and you're set. Girls always ask if they can pet it! an added bonus. I'd recommend this jacket to anyone.

It's tight

By:
January 31, 2008

Bought this jacket as a base layer and for its unique look. Paired with a solid hard shell, I found myself cracking my pitzips in low-20 degree temps. For retaining heat and looking good during apres skiing this jacket is tough to beat. Don't expect this jacket to keep you dry in the rain or dry quickly, but I knew that before buying it. My main drawback is the fit; I'm a medium in almost everything that I wear at 5'10'' 165, but found the tight-fitting medium made me look like tough guy and I had to return it for a large. Try one on before ordering online

I got this not being sure what to expect. It's awesome. Very warm, it seems to hold up very well even in a strong breeze. Given the light weight and warmth factor, a must have for anyone who wants to spend time in anything other than perfect weather. It was a little tight in the armpits and across the chest, but otherwise I have no gripes with it. I haven't had it long enough to determine durability, but it seems to be very well made.

warmth, style and plushiness i would give it a 9. Durability i would give it a 6-7, if you wear this thing out the plushiness loses loft and leaves ugly flat patches- especially on the elbows and once you wash it, it is a whole new- not so soft- jacket. I wore mine to death and it is still good as a beater jacket, be prepared to buy more than one if you want it to last.

In all honesty I'd give it a 6.5. It's not as durable as regular fleece but very plush & more compressible. For what it's worth, I'd give it a 10 on the plushness scale!Chiming in, it really depends on your scale. 10 being "will last longer than the pyramids" or 10 being "will last me out the season" are two entirely different things. That said, Jeff's right. The outer fabric is not as long-lasting as a standard fleece.---------------I beat the hell outta my gear. Mine lasted a full season of hard climbing & mountaineering without issue. The only problem is that it was never the same after I washed it.

The softest jacket you'll ever own 1

By:
June 27, 2008

I purchased this jacket (in saphire because it's on sale) to replace a 13-year-old Mountain Hardwear "Chill" fleece jacket that is probably my favorite jacket of all time. The monkey fleece is every bit as warm as I had hoped, it kept me toasty late-nite on a camping trip at 8,000ft. elevation this week. I don't think the monkey jacket will be as durable (no abrasion patches to protect fleece at shoulders, cuffs or elbows) as traditional fleece, but I think it is even warmer as a middle layer under a shell. I wouldn't recommend as an everyday 3-season jacket, but it is unbeatable for warmth/weight as an insulation layer.
Bottom line: super comfortable, warm, light-weight, and chicks will want to pet you! Order a size big, runs small.

It was -31 degrees this morning (without wind, if there was wind then I'd have broken out my windstopper tech fleece) and I was out hauling wood to the house. I was wearing just this and a lightweight layer under neath while outside for about an hour. I was actually sweating underneath. I'd have never guessed that I would be that warm wearing just those two items. I wasn't making any records by how fast I was moving either. It was only moderate activity but yet stayed incredibly warm. I actually unzipped the fleece a bit.

I order mine as Loose fitting. I like a size larger so I can wear a sweatshirt underneath. I live near Lake Michigan, and it gets damp & cold here. I am usually very warm and unless its windy or below 20. I seldom wear a shell over the top. Combined with a thin soft shell, the combo keeps you very warm. If your stomach is larger than your chest, order a size larger or it may be too tight in the waist. -------------------Fitted or loose depends on what size you buy. I got mine a little small for me because I hate bulk when I'm climbing. There's enough room for a base layer or a really thin mid layer underneath mine, but that's how I like it. The piece stretches and moves with me as I'm placing ice tools.

Awesome light fleece

By:
February 2, 2009

Well, I can honestly say that I was a little skeptical to buy this jacket. I mean, I already own a MH Tech jacket, why would I need a monkey man fleece as well?
Well, in hindsight I can say that it was a decision well made. This jacket is amazing! It is extremely comfortable, and will insulate any external shell, This jacket is perfect for a cool fall day. It is also easy to clean, and the material of the jacket has not become worn in any way.
There are a few drawbacks though. The Monkey Man fleece is not a wind-stopper jacket, so the wind passes right through it. If the weather is extremely cold, it is best to wear it as an insulating layer. Also, the jacket has no pit zips.
Overall, I love this jacket and would recommend it to anyone!

February 4, 2009

Definitely a great product: lightweight, not at all confining, warm, and good looking. It's not a five-star in my book, because I've been in some windy spots in cold but nor really cold places, back to the wind, and definitely felt I needed another layer on top to stop the wind. Otherwise, this is one of my favorite pieces of gear. A good-looking jacket to keep me warm in cool temps. A good fleece under a windstopper jacket with or without a little insulation depending upon specific temps. I love the new design for the wrists, which is more durable and provides a better seal against heat loss. This is my second Monkey Man fleece and I'll keep coming back for more. I travel to lots of different places in my business and it's always with me, fall and winter and into early spring. It's also good-looking enough to wear to nicer restaurants or pubs.Try it; see how it works best for you.

Too tight...

By:
March 27, 2008

I loved the Monkey Man Fleece, but the armpits were too small and I do not have overly huge upper arms. The small was a great fit in length and waist, but the armpits way too small. I then ordered a medium and was again frustrated with the small arm openings. The fit of the medium was much larger than the small, plus the waist was too big (too bad it does not have a draw cord). Overall, I loved the feel and the look, but both were returned and I opted an Arcteryx fleece and I am happy. It would be great if Mountain Hardware would redesign the Monkey Man with a little more room in the pits! Also, big thanks to the staff at this site; they made returns a breeze and are very helpful. Thanks again!

Too Warm?

By: Backcountry.com Employee
January 11, 2008

This is hands-down the best fleece I've owned. I bought it as a thick mid layer to brave the nasty days on the mountain and it is perfect.
Honestly, the only complaint right now is it can be too warm when skiing. I don't wear it under my shell if the temp is higher than 20 - that turns out to be a sweatfest despite how breathable it is.
Also, if you don't take it off and wear it indoors it will sneak up on you... then all of a sudden you're tearing it off in a full-on heat flash.
Another reason I got this one is because I was sick and tired of every "normal" fleece looking good for 2 months, then getting that pilled look. No worries here - the fabric just does it's own thing and looks great.

I love the fuzzy feel. But no pit zips and funky cuffs are bringing me down. The cuffs are very strange and feel funny if it is not being used as a layer, and with no pit zips it is not much of a under layer. It looks good though.

I dig it

Thought I added a review, but I guess it didn't go through.

I really love this jacket, it may not keep out the wind, but it was never meant to. This thing is perfect for a late fall or early spring day. It fits a little bit smaller than I expected, it was a little snug in the tummy area but I'm also 6'2 and 250 with a lineman build. I ordered the XXL but it still fits good, not too tight.

I would recommend for your next fleece purchase, I wasn't disappointed.

Great for what's it's made for

I really dig this jacket, it's warm and a great fall/spring jacket. It's not going to keep out the wind, it's not meant for that.

I got the XXL and it fits great, i'm about 6'2 and 250 with a lineman build. It's a little snug in the tummy area, but not that bad elsewhere. I would buy another when this one wears out. A great buy, I'm glad I invested in it.

It looks great too!

Mountain Hardwear Monkey Man Fleece Jacket - Men's

Money see monkey do yeaahhhh. This fleece is incredibly warm for the weight. The fleece is beyond comfy and works great for warmth and then also as a backcountry pillow. The thumb gussets are great too with a stretchy material over the cuff to it makes a glove cuff fit over it much easier. It fits true to size with a relaxed fit. I am 220 lbs and take the xl.

Fuzzy Burliness

Never in my life have I owned a better fleece! This is by far my favorite jacket to throw on when its cold outside. Its got great style and looks. The fuzziness of the jacket attracts a lot of questions regarding its warmth and comfort...It keeps me nice and toasty without being the least bit irritating, and its like a magnet for girls to cuddle up with you.

too small

By:

I bought this jacket for my boyfriend using the sizing chart for this jacket...it was way too tight on him so I had to send it back for a larger size. I'm disappointed that, not only is the sizing chart inaccurate, but I had to pay for the shipping to return it for a different size! BUY A SIZE LARGER THAN YOU THINK! you're going to be layering clothing under this jacket, don't forget that!
