Mountain Hardwear Typhoon Jacket - Men's

Don't let the raging storm stop you—stay dry in the waterproof breathable Mountain Hardwear Men's Typhoon Jacket. Mountain Hardwear made this exceptionally lightweight rain jacket from Gore-Tex Paclite ripstop fabric, which breathes deeply so you stay comfortable while you backpack in wet weather. Pull up the brimmed hood to keep rain from falling into your eyes. Articulated sleeves allow you to move naturally, and underarm vents unzip to let excess body heat escape as you log miles on the trail.

Bottom Line: Experience a backcountry rainstorm from the safety of your Mountain Hardwear Typhoon Jacket.

How does the sizing on this compare to other Mountain Hardwear

How does the sizing on this compare to other Mountain Hardwear shells, like the Epic in particular? I've had the Cohesion (large) and that was too small. The Epic XL fits perfectly, but no stores around me have the Typhoon. I'm 6'3" and 185 lbs. Very lanky. Anyone know how it compares?? Thanks!!

Mountain Hardware Typhoon Jacket not for use with backpacks

By:
March 24, 2008

I contacted Gore-Tex Customer Service to inquire about how to maintain my new Mountain Hardware Typhoon jacket. I was first asked how I intended to use the jacket. I answered that I expected to carry large climbing approach loads up to 75 pounds. I was told that PacLite, the Gore-Tex laminate used in the Typhoon jacket was never intended to be used for backpacking. I was also told that this person I contacted at Gore-Tex customer service was present during the time when PacLite was first created from demands for a waterproof-breathable jacket which could fit into a one liter water bottle. PacLite was never designed, according to the man at Gore-Tex, to be worn while carrying a backpack because the thin material would quickly fail under the pressure of a backpack's shoulder straps and hip belt. He recommended I at least consider using a Gore-Tex Performance shell but for climbing and mountaineering, that I should try to buy a Gore-Tex Pro shell.

1. Paclite=$200 ProShell=$400...

2. The face fabric determines the durability ultimately of the garment not the laminate. That is why we use 70 denier fabrics coupled with Paclite in some of our most durable and burly jackets (Xenon Jacket.) Paclite breathes extremely well and costs less and this is one reason why we like using it in many of our jackets. The Typhoon Jacket is made with this fabric: GORE-TEX® PACLITE® Mini-Ripstop. This is 100% nylon ripstop. 40 denier, high filament count bright yarn. GORE-TEX® PACLITE® Laminate. DWR finish. 2.65 oz/yd2. and is extremely durable for its weight. Furthermore, Paclite could be called a 2.5 layer fabric: face fabric/laminate/thin coating on the back of the laminate. This extremely thin coating is what helps to protect the laminate from things like pack straps and prevents the oils from your body from clogging the porous gore membrane. Paclite was traditionally made with lighter face fabrics so you could do things like stick them in one liter bottles. We like the laminate and it is easy to work with and so we like experimenting with it and putting heavier more durable face fabrics together with it to make things like ski and climbing shells. ProShells, in contrast, have a woven backer on the back of the laminate and typically, in most cases, utilize a slightly burlier face fabric (face fabric/gore membrane/woven backer) So, the woven backer is what protects the laminate in a ProShell from damage from pack straps. ProShell fabric is sweet too and we make jackets out of ProShell as well (Argon Jacket, Beryllium Jacket, Vertical Jacket) it just costs more.

3. In all of our durability tests coupled with many athlete hours spent torturing the Typhoon Jacket climbing, skiing, and traveling... we have found Paclite to be plenty durable for use with packs. Seriously.

Awesome Light Jacket

By:
October 24, 2009

This Jacket is awesome. First off, it keeps you dry. If you get hot (I live in the Tropics) there is plenty of ventilation provided by the mesh lined front pockets (nice and long) and the very long double pit zips. Its work great with a pack even in hot weather. When things get cool, close all zippers and everything is sealed. When I first got the jacket I was a tad skeptical. It is quite light and somewhat thin and the interior kinda looks like a plastic bag sort of (in most forums people complain about this) and feels a tad clammy on bare skin but it isnt bad. But man, it works well. Once you use it you just know it breathes and lets water vapor out. The jacket also is not that quiet when you walk with it but again it isnt bad at all. It actually feels good on you. Besides the zippers the typhoon has a very nice hood. I tested with my C.A.M.P. helmet and works perfectly. Regarding fit, I got a Large (im 6-2, 190) and fit is a bit loose (good for layering) and long enough to be quite nice with a pack on. Overall a really nice shell that is light and packs small but still has great features. Just what I wanted.

I have yet to know if there are durability issues but it doesnt look/feel too flimsy on the outside.

Do you mean the waterproof/breathability ratings?
This jacket is okay as far as durbility. Paclite isn't the most durable stuff though, as it is really meant for compactability. It is incredibly waterproof though. If you're wanting something with a lot more durability then check out either a GoreTex Performance or Pro shell.
Hope that helps.

looks great, fits great, protects gtreat, compacks great.
My second jacket from mountain hardware and they are still yet to disappoint. Im a big fan of the gore-tex pac lite, its very thin but holds up great. The only problem is i wished that all the zippers were taped but other then that it couldnt be better. Medium fits great and im 170 and 5 foot 9 and it still leaves a little room to throw a sweater or a small layer underneith.
Couldnt be happier. Real talk.

I haven't found anything wrong with this jacket except i wish all the zippers were taped but other then that there's nothing to complain about. Medium fits perfect (im 5 9 and 170 pounds) and backcountry.com make it a breeze to order from. Throw this in your pac and you wont even notice it but you will appreciate it when i t starts to pour. All in all i really happy with it and i suggest it to everyone.

Write your question here...I have a rain jacket but I'm looking for one strictly for backpacking and hiking. Live in Oregon so it will see a lot of rain and I am a little rough on my gear. I take good care of it but just a little rough. That being said is the Typhoon my best choice? I saw one review that said the paclite is not designed for carrying your pack. Is this a good choice or is there a better jacket out there for my needs?

I have this jacket and i use it for trekkings or climbing (it´s ideal for that!), because it has all conditions of a good water proof jacket but it´s light!! I think it´s design for that kind of activities when the weight manners. If I were you I´ll go with Pro Shell or performance shell gore tex for more resistance.

Excellent Jacket!

By:
December 18, 2008

I love this thing. I bought it to replace my old marmot precip jacket which was nice but i wanted a more breathable, durable jacket with goretex. This fit the bill great. I've had it for two years and take it on all my backpacking trips. It’s very light and breathes great. I also like the styling too, not plain like some of Arcteryx jackets but also not too over the top unless you get the tiger color. My one gripe with this jacket is that it has a large hood. I've tried adjusting it with the cord on the back of the hood but it always ends up coming over my head to far and blocks alot of my view. I used some velcro to hold the hood back a bit and now it works fine. The double storm flap in the front really doesn't bother me. I even prefer it over so called "waterproof" zippers because those zippers can be stiff and hard to zip up in certain situations. Plus they're not really waterproof, just water resistant. If you want an actual waterproof zipper then look at the ones on a paddling drysuit. Overall a great jacket.

PS - In my opinion, even though arcteryx is a great brand, i feel its the new north face of the outdoor world in that alot of people wear it to be seen in and don’t necessarily buy it to use mountaineering or whatever. I mean if your going be doing that kind of stuff then Arcteryx is a good choice, but if you’re using for more down to earth ventures like backpacking, camping or as an around the town rain jacket, then spend less and get the mountain hardwear which can still be used for that kind of stuff.

How's the wind protection? I'm debating between this

How's the wind protection?

I'm debating between this and the stiffer-feeling Xenon jacket (which is a Gore-Tex Performance instead of Paclite).

I absolutely want complete wind protection and waterproofness. Durability isn't strictly necessary, and I would slightly prefer more packability instead of more durability.

So, the main question is: would the Xenon give me any additional wind protection over the Typhoon?

By:
June 15, 2009

Was this helpful? (0) (0)

Flag

Both Jackets are made utilizing the Paclite Laminate from GoreTex. The Xenon is categorized as a 'Performance Shell' by GoreTex due to the fact that it has a heavier face fabric than the Typhoon Jacket. This heavier face fabric would dictate that the Typhoon might provide more packability and the Xenon would provide more durability. As Andrew says, both jackets are completely wind and waterproof. Hope this helps!

So I'm debating between the Typhoon Jacket and the Beryllium

So I'm debating between the Typhoon Jacket and the Beryllium Jacket. I'm looking for something I can use in the summertime for mountain bike riding and hiking. In the winter I am thinking I would definitely use the Beryllium Jacket for snowboarding/skiing. My real question is: is the Beryllium Jacket lightweight and breathable enough to use a rain shell in the summer with temperatures going into the 90s.

By:
May 29, 2009

Was this helpful? (0) (0)

Flag

Eric. The Beryllium is made utilizing ProShell Gore. It is one of the most breathable fabrics on the market today. This uber-tough jacket would work phenomenally as a rain coat. I have been using my Argon Jacket, which is essentially a slimmer cut version of the Beryllium, as a rain coat, climbing jacket, and overall mountain parka for 2 seasons. The Typhoon Jacket utilizes the PacLite laminate from Gore, is lightweight, and extremely breathable. You would probably find that it would not be as durable as the Beryllium in the long run. Hope this info helps!

Mountain Tough??...Would it be advisable to purchase this jacket for mountaineering and climbing purposes? Could it handle the tougher and potentially more abrasive activities if I took care of it or should I look at something like the Escape or the Terra? It's a baller sale. Thanks for the help.

Victor. This is a Gore Paclite jacket that would probably suit you well for your needs... especially if you take care of it. The Escape shell fabric would probably not be as durable as the fabric on the Typhoon although that is a guess and not from testing. The shell fabric on the Terra Shell is a 20D nylon shell that is one of the lightest and most breathable that we use. So, if it is between the Escape, Terra, and the Typhoon... I would pick up a Typhoon. Hope this info helps!

Great, Stylish Jacket

By:
October 10, 2007

I have had this jacket for about a month and have worn it in the rain and while hiking at 14,000ft. It is very comfortable and very waterproof. It works great for backcountry pursuits and is stylish enough to be worn around town. The only reason I give it a 4 is the torso length, a little short. I am 6'2", 170lbs and a medium fits great.

Tested this jacket in 6 or 7 full on thunderstorms, only part of my body that got wet after standing out there for 1-3 hours at a time, were my pants/shoes. Now I just need to save up the cheese for the typhoon pants! One of my favorite features of this jacket is the pit vents, I know its common ground on most jackets, but It really comes in handy for me and others who get hot quickly. Jacket is very well made and fit is true to size. I'm 6'0 150 and went with the large.

Better off purchasing an Arcteryx Alpha SL

By:
July 10, 2008

I bought this on sale for $80 a year ago from backcountry, but a few things on this jacket has been driving me nuts.

I don't know why MH decided to put a "storm flap" on the front zipper instead of sealing it on their premier paclite jacket. The flap routinely gets caught and you can't zip up your jacket without looking. Moreoever the Zipper end is so small that sometimes its hard to get a hold of with a pair of ski gloves on.

That being said, it performs as advertised. A light straight forward bombproof paclite jacket that is easily compressible and has no useless extras (minus the storm flap).

Perfectly happy with it

By:
October 17, 2008

I've been hiking in the rain twice with this jacket (seemingly the only two times it has rained in SE Utah the last 8 months....). It worked very well both times. There was no moisture, whatsoever, on the inner part of the jacket, nor on my under-layers. I bought my son the same jacket, and he had the same experience. I'm not sure what the person below (or the Customer Service they called) is referring to about the jacket not being made for backpacks. Both times I've used this jacket in the rain, I've used it with a backpack, and I've had no problems, at all.

However, the fit is a little problemmatic for me. It seems that I am about a large-and-a-half in both MHW and Patagonia, so the XL I bought runs a little big (I am 6' and 200 lbs). However, I will be using it as a shell, sometimes with multiple, thicker layers underneath, so it should be fine.

I am perfectly happy with this jacket, as I have been with any Gore-tex gear I've ever owned. I'm somewhat new to MHW, but I'm starting to feel the same way about their gear - it's well made, functions exactly as it's supposed to, and I've been perfectly happy with MHW gear, as well.

Great breathable shell

By:
June 25, 2009

I love this shell. It breaths very well and is 100% water and wind proof. I used this for the last two weeks back packing and hiking and not once did it let me down. The pit zips are great for venting and for even more venting you can open the side pockets that are mesh in the inside to let air in. The one complaint is that I wish it had a tighter mid section but I think if I would have went with the medium instead of large that would have fixed that problem. Im 160 and 5' 10" and with a Tshirt under it the shell is a little baggy but with a fleece it is just right.

Fits awesome! I used to be a proponent of Arcteryx but this jacket is awesome. I haven't tried it with a helmet or insulating layers, but as a rain shell over a light shirt with a light pack it's great, Velcro on sleeves works awesome the zipper is good, the waterproof zips are just stiff enough but still slide up and down one handed. The brim of the hood could be a bit stiffer but it's not a sticking point. Overall a very solid jacket for the price (on sale for $80 - go Benchmark!) So far very happy with it. Oh yeah - if you got a buddy that didn't bring a sleeping bag on a trip - it will keep him warmer at night, lol :)

Great jacket.

Great jacket. Lightweight, waterproof. Perfect for what I need it for. At 5'10" and 165lbs, I can wear the large with a thick fleece under it and still be comfortable.

Good

I got this jacket and the next weekend i went out backpacking, and it rained and rained, i kept dry, some others in my group didn't, i felt pretty comfortable in it and whenever else i use it it breezes really nicel, very lightweight and compactable. the only down side is that it is a lightweight material, that you do worry about the durabilty of it. under a lightwieght (20-25) pound pack it performed nicely, though i was a little worried about the wieght of the back pushing the rain water through, do to the review by psisquared100135302, but i'm pretty sure the paclite would be fine for lightweigt to medium weight backpack, and the guy at goretex was just trying to sell a more expensive fabric, that would be less likely to be returned for repairs in the future.

Love everything about it but...

Love everything about it but the PRICE! You can find the same performance from others for half this price. Wait for a sale. I found the Typhoon to be perfectly waterProof and the coverage is exactly what I wanted. I'm 5-10 170lbs and the Medium has more than enough room for me. Happy Trails! 4 stars because it's just too expensive at full retail!

Great Jacket

By:

This jacket is a great piece of rain gear. I got it last week from Backcountry and took it out this week. It fends off the elements well and fits perfectly (I'm 5'8" 150lbs and the Med fit perfectly). I would recommend this jacket to anyone looking for affordable goretex gear to use on your next backpacking trip. The only negative I can find is that the color fits a little funny with the hood rolled up. I just keep the hood out most of the time anyway.

All in all; great jacket.

Excellent all around storm shell

By:
May 30, 2009

It seems like I rarely leave home with out the Mountain Hardwear Typhoon. In addition to frequent back country use I'm also out of town for work 2-4 days a week. This storm shell is light and packs down pretty small so it doesn't take up very much room in my pack or suitcase. Surprisingly when I weighed my XL jacket at home it came in at 15oz., 1 oz. less than listed (16 oz.). The Gore-Tex Paclite works awesome as I have used it in a couple of downpours and it kept me perfectly dry and was very breathable. The jacket also features pit zips, an exterior pocket that works well for my Ipod and the exterior pockets are mesh lined and offer additional ventilation when open. The jacket fits well I'm 6'2" 200lbs. and I have really long arms the XL offers plenty of arm coverage and is just a tiny bit baggier in the body than I prefer but my mid layers fit perfectly underneath. The Mountain Hardwear Typhoon storm shell has become my most used piece of gear it is an exceptional all around light weight storm shell.

Waterproof and lightweight

This jacket is great! Completely waterproof, lightweight, packable, and looks good. Underarm vents work well to release heat. Drawstrings work well to lock out the elements. All-around great jacket.

I just finished hiking some of the AT in the smokies and was very pleased with the breathability and protection I got from this jacket when a sudden rain storm came in

Great Lightweight shell

Bought this along with a Patagonia Rain Shadow, and ended up returning the Patagonia. Although more waterproof, the Patagonia does not breath as well and has stubborn zips. Despite lacking a watertight zip, the Typhoon works marvelously. My only two gripes: Comes slightly short on me, lacks a dropback hem like the Patagonia and lacks an internal pocket to keep my iphone dry.
