The Mountain Hardwear Hammerhead 3 tent has 46 sq ft of floor space, and an additional 20 sq ft of vestibule room, making it Mountain Hardwear's roomiest three-person tent. In addition, the Hammerhead 3 gives you 4.5 feet of interior height. Two large D-shape side doors stay off the ground when open, and are made of mesh no-see-um netting to keep air flowing while halting pests. The ceiling panel rolls back for additional ventilation and communication with the outside world. The roomy vestibule at each door gives you plenty of room to drop shoes and extra gear for when the neighbors come to visit. The Hammerhead 3 sleeps up to 3 people. Combine your tent with the Hammerhead 3 Footprint for maximum protection from the ground.
Bottom Line: Hang the disco ball and invite the neighbors over for an evening of gin rummy in the Mountain Hardwear Hammerhead 3.
This may well be the one to own. I'm not surprised to see such a high rating for this tent. I've owned mine for about 4 years or so now. Never a problem with leaking or condensation, and we've spent quite a bit of time hunkered down for many rainy days(waaay too much). It withstands some serious gusts and even stayed up with a 6" snow load, while all the other 3-season tents around us just caved. The two doors and twin vestibules are a great feature. Each holds a ton of gear. The headroom is incomparable, and while 3 people is a bit tight, you won't loose any sleep to being elbowed. It is a bit too heavy for backpacking, but since it's not advertised as such, in all fairness, the load can be easily divided, if you chose to go that way. All in all, a great tent for almost all applications.
Love the tent. Agree with a lot of the other reviews, it is a little on the heavy side. And cramped for 3 people but perfect for 2. Easy to set up, easy to take down. The best feature is the zip panels, great for privacy and venting. Great tent.
How does the roll back ceiling panel work? Is it a separate zippered part of the overal fly? Or do you have to loosen up the fly and roll the entire front section up? It appears as if there are a couple rows of zippers running along each edge of the front panel. One reveiwer refered to the zippered panel. Also do the tent body doors have a ripstop nylon zippered cover or are they simply mesh. Is this tent you have actually Blufin in color? MTH's site and otheroutfitters list the "2"'s as being Bluefin and the "3"'s as being a Humboldt Green. I actually prefer the Mountain Hardware Blue. Thanks for your help...Barry
The 'roll back ceiling panel' is a part of the tent body and not the fly. In the picture, you see the big mesh area? Well, that big area is what the panel covers when zipped in place. When it is not zipped in place is rolls up on the ceiling of the tent. The doors DO have a ripstop nylon panel as well as mesh. It looks like what is available is the 'blue fin' color and it looks like the have 1 left! Hope this helps.
I bought this from a thrift store of all places, I was excited about the price, but was nervous about a used tent coming from a river guide service. Even though it was probably hammered, it has been so nice. In the snow it does really nice because the nylon goes up quite a bit to block out wind and the cold. The vestibule is way big, and I like how they designed the inside to sleep 2-3, but then have extra space for gear in the inside. I thought the windows were dorky, but they are actually pretty sweet. Your going to dig this tent, especially when your buying it new.
I used this tent this summer on a trek in the Wind River Range and fell in love with it. Not only it well made, but there is enough space to comfortably fit three people. I love the way the windows unzip to allow most of the tent to be mesh allowing you to see the star. The only problems I had were when setting up the tent, clips are difficult to clip into the poles because the tent fabric is so tight. This aside, I still refer to the Hammerhead as the sweet dreams motel.
have taken this tent on many multi-day rafting trips. This one is one the Smith River in Montana. Tent held up great even though we camped through some rainstorms. never had excess condensation. Set up is easy. vestibule size is great (one on each side) would buy again for sure.
Excellent tentquality materials and construction. The Atlas 7001 poles are lightweight and strong.
I used the tent in May, 2006 for a 120-mile canoe trip down the St. John River in northern Maine. Cold temps and three solid days of rain. Set up and take down every dayprety rugged treatment for a tent. It performed flawlessly.
It will accommodate two people comfortablythree people would be VERY cozy! The two vestibules are very small as well.
I had a problem keeping the fly front taut. I added an adjustable nylon webbing strap which allowed me to tighten the fly at this spot.
I called Mountain Hardwear twice about this. I was told that someone from the repair department would return the call. No one called back. The third time I called, I was transferred to someone else who was able to assist. A little annoying. Customer service needs 'tweaking'.
Overall, I would buy this tent again, and I recommend it highly.
