The Mountain Hardwear Trango's multiple entries mean neither camper has to worry about being blocked in or out of the tent; there's a front and rear door in the tent, and additional entries in the vestibule. Mountain Hardwear's unique four-pole design allows for extra living space without sacrificing the tent's stability and strength in all weather conditions. In addition, UVX windows let you assess the outside weather conditions, while enjoying the interior comfort of the Trango 2. Large stake-out loops accept skis and pickets, for added convenience. Combine the Trango 2 with a rectangular gear loft and a footprint to take advantage of every feature.
Bottom Line: Don't freeze outside waiting for your door-hog camping partner to move so you can grab your dry socks from the back of the tent; the Mountain Hardwear Trango 2 gives each camper plenty of floor space and their own entry.
I have only used this tent 1 time so far for a short backpacking trip but thought I would at least express my first thoughts... The conditions over the 3 day trip were Snowy, Windy and Sunny about 10 F-35 F. Although weight is typically the first concern about this tent for a lot of folks...it was not really an issue since the tent was split with other backpacker. If you are a solo backpacker, then it may be a bit on the heavy side. Will be perfect for expedition basecamp however. It is very fast and easy to setup-tent, fly, stakes, and guy lines in under 20 mins-just tent and fly in under 5. Very durable and well constructed materials were used to manufacture this tent and it shows. The tent is roomy for 2 people about 5'10 in size. Fits 2 long Thermarest 4 just fine with some space. More than plenty of internal pockets to store gear-both along side of walls and overhead. The vestibule in front is large with 2 entrances which make it very nice for entering is snowy/windy conditions. Front vestibule is also large enough for cooking in stormy conditions. The back vestibule however, is small but is a perfect size for 2 pair of boots and 2 weekend packs. It seems not to be large enough enough for 2 weeklong packs although you could probably squeeze them in. No catch on any of the Zippers used. The tent has 2 doors. 1 in the front and 1 in the back. The doors can be left open for ventilation with just the door screen left closed (zippered), or you can close the door and the screen or just leave both screen and doors open for maximum airflow. The ties to hold back your doors could be more friendly for people that wear gloves. This makes it a bit hard to tie back with gloves on. The inside vent on ceiling of tent is great for airflow during evening. It also makes for good weather watching while inside the tent. The tent stays very warm at night with 2 people in it. Inside tent while moving a bit was around 55 F when it was 15 F outside. At night while sleeping it was about 32 F which was very comfortable those chilly conditions of 10F or below. My only complaint about this tent is...after an evening of sleeping with 2 people and the tent full closed up, there was condensation build up on side walls inside the tent and all over the outside of the tent. I was thinking the tent was going to remain dry INSIDE. Maybe I will try to adjust my evening venting and perhaps try other ways of guying out the tent to minimize condensation issues and maximize airflow without sacrificing the warmth inside the tent. Last--Great tent glow during the day for positive vibes when gloomy outside and even better when sun is shinning! Overall---I am very happy with this tent and would recommend this tent to anyone.
Heavy, and setup isn't completely intuitive. I got the fly on backwards once. Its hard to concentrate when its well below zero. A bombproof shelter, but I think I'd rather have a 3 person single wall shelter.
the Mountain Hardwear Trango 2 Tent 2-Person 4-SeasonDoes this tent come with a footprint or is it necessary to buy that separately?Does this tent come with the rectangular gear loft or is it necessary to but that separately?
I have owned my Trango 2 for 5 years now and have tested it in all weather. It has performed very well in everything I have thrown at it. I spent a night in the backcountry where it snowed 15 cm on the tent overnight and it had no problems holding the weight. I have taken it out in -15 C weather and been very warm. I have used it in summer with all the vents open and it does just fine. The only downside is the weight. At 10 lbs it is a little heavy for long hikes. The floor is bathtub like and holds up well to dirt or snow. I bought the optional footprint and it has helped in really dirty places. I did spend the time to seam seal all the seams to add extra waterproofing.
I hear that the clips to clip the tent to the poles are kind of difficult... Does anyone have more info on how well this thing sets up in the cold? Can you keep your gloves on?
I have found no difficulty setting this tent up in the cold. It is totally do-able with gloves on. Stick the poles in the corners and clip the tent up in place... no problem. Tip: squeeze the clips with the gates (located where poles cross) vertically to pop them open. Hope this helps.
Just bought this baby, it seems like a good little tent, I have not as of yet broke it in, but I did set it up in my living room and was sweating away in 5 minutes...this tent is extremely warm, easy to set up and take down it is just a little hard to tell which way is the front and which is the back, but I am sure that will come with practice. Me, my wife, and two little kids all fit in comfortably and are going to take it up AF canyon ASAP before the snow melts!!! - Keep it real homies
Does anyone know the quality of the floor with the Mountain Hardwear Trango 2? does it have a seam or is it fully tubbed and if it has a seam how does it hold up to leaking?
Nomadic~ The bath tub floor (70D/210T nylon taffeta. 5000mm polyether urethane coating for waterproofness. Durable and non-hydrolyzing) does have a seam but it is seam taped with urethane tape. No leakage. The tent is guaranteed water tight from the factory as well... hope this helped. ~Cordillera
Great tent - bombpoof and whit stands almost all kinds of wind plus it takes a ton of snow. The pitching is not the fastest but once securely anchored down I trust this tent more then a hut. I also have a Trango 4, which has by far more room but is not as windproof. If you are looking fore the best winter / bad weather tent - you found it. The Trango 2 is all you need if you are willing to take compromises in terms of space. It though still is big enough for 2 people with winter and/or climbing gear. We even slept once with 3 people in that tent - which was very crowded and I won't recommend it.
anthood~ If by "multi-pitch" you mean can it be pitched with just the fly and the footprint... then yes. It is called "Pitchlight" from MHW. If you mean something else... then I am not sure. ~Cordillera
This tent is awesome for winter camping and high altitude adventures. It's too heavy to be a very good summer tent, but I have slept in it in all seasons and it works well (just vent it out when it's warm). It really shines when things get cold and nasty. You'll never feel more secure sleeping outside in a blizzard! Super easy to set up even for one person wearing gloves, and plenty roomy for two to sleep and eat comfortably. Vestibules on both ends are large enough to store gear for two and keep everything (relatively) dry, and are also large enough to cook in when things get nasty outside (be careful though!). The worst I've put this tent through so far was a vicious early winter storm at 12,000'. 50-60 mph gusts with over a foot of wet, sticky, heavy snow in less than eight hours (it was coming down). A couple of other folks down the way had their hex tent collapse on them in the middle of the night. Needless to say, they looked pissed when they came by first thing in the morning and found us warm and comfortable inside the Trango 2! Great tent, don't hesitate to get one!
This is an awesome tent overall. My only 2 complaints are the distance from the fly to the ground is a little to much (I realize this is for ventilation but, the large top vent does the job just fine.) Also, the hooks instead of continuous sleeves are a little sketchy in high winds but, none the less work fine. Again, overall great. Sets up super fast. Huge front vestibule. Roomy as hell for two people inside. Usable rear vestibule. Tones of overhead storage (mesh.) Coolest fly color on the market!!!
this tent can handle ANYTHING you throw at it. a friend of mine told me a story about how his trango survived an avalanche on his basecamp in alaska. it's definitely on the heavy side, but you can't get better value for money on an expedition tent than this sucker.
Supposedly from previous reviewers the clips are reportedly difficult.... I couldn't agree more! Clips make setting up a tent easier then picking your nose. Whether in heavy rain, or blowing sideways whiteout snow storms, or blue bird clear sky, the tent setup is amazingly quick and easy. Quick and easy tent setup means that should the weather be less then desirable then you'll be inside your shelter and away from it that much faster. Once I went clips I'll probably never go back to the pain in the butt sleeve system.
