Mountain Hardwear Phantom Jacket - Women's - 2006

The Mountain Hardwear Phantom down jacket is an ultralight, incredibly compressible furnace for your backcountry forays. At just 13oz, you'll barely notice it's in your pack. If you've skinned up twice as fast as your companions, you don't want to be rewarded for your fitness with frostbite. Don the 800-fill down Phantom Jacket and loiter with your hands ensconced in fleece-lined pockets until your party-animal friends join you at the top of the climb. Then field compliments on how great the diamond-quilted Phantom looks on you. Finally, stow the Phantom, arc a set of perfect turns, skin back up and repeat!

Bottom Line: Featherweight, compressible, oven-warm, and did we mention fleece-lined handwarmer pockets?

Warm and Cozy

I'm a wimp when it comes to cold weather. I don't hike backcountry - my outdoor adventures primarily consist of time at our Indiana country home playing with kids, husband and dogs. When the temperature gets below 40 degrees I turn into a wimp. I wanted a coat that was WARM - I mean walk outside in zero degree temperatures and feel - warm. After testing this baby 2 weeks in Montana and during Indiana cold spells - I can say it is awesome. It's the warmest coat I've ever owned. Compact packing feature is really nice too. Only disappointment - a little shorter than I would like. However, did try on this same coat at a store recently and it was about an inch longer and perfect so assume the newer version was made slightly longer.

Toasty

By:

This is a very warm jacket, when worn with a fleece and a hat. I'm a warmth fanatic, my gold standard is the North Face Nuptse (which I passed over only because of price & the colors are terrible this year). Even light exercise (walking the dog) in very cold temps and wind was enough to keep me toasty. I wish it had a collar-stashable hood and more pockets and I hope the nylon shell stands up like my old North Face. We'll see. A big plus is its generous sizing, so arm movements are completely unrestricted.

less filling? still great!

By:

An ex-boyfriend bought me this jacket 3 years ago- 2 sizes too big (maybe why he's an ex???) So I finally sold that one and bought one that fit! It packs down super small and I have been so happy to have it on many a hut trip. The only thing I have noticed is that the new one seems to have less stuffing. Could it have something to do with Mountain Hardware being bought out by Columbia??? Regardless, it is still super warm and I love it!

Phantom, new fav

By:

I bought the Mountain Hardware Phantom Jacket for my wife thinking she might use it once in awhile for cold days. She has not used another jacket since she got it. It is toasty warm, looks adorable on her, and doesn't weigh her down. She loves it.

toasty warm and lightweight

This jacket is toasty warm without bulkiness and weight. I love the warmth and the weight, however the exterior nylon is a little delicate and feathers can escape.

Super Jacket! So light and yet so warm. Great construction, style and the 14d nylon material has a great feel too.

"it's so light, does it really keep you warm?" YES!

This jacket is great. I wore it home for the holidays, and my friends and family were very skeptical when i told them to feel how light it is... but when they tried it on, they were amazed at how warm it is! Walking from my car to the stores when x-mas shopping, i was perfectly warm, and when i got inside, i didn't have to rip it off (like i usually have to with warm stuff, like my Patagonia R4) because it's very light and comfortable, and i could wear it inside without sweating. haven't tested it in the rough outdoors yet, but it keeps me toasty warm in my icebox (89 Volvo, which takes an eternity to warm up!)

Great Choice

I purchased this to use while climbing Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. It kept me warm and was light and was compact to carry otherwise. This was definitely a good choice.

MH Phantom Jacket

By:
April 11, 2005

I just returned from a 3 week expedition to remote Canadian Yukon where we spent long days and nights digging deep snow pits to study snow melt. The coat was a perfect heating furnace (I was never cold!) and was amazingly small when stuffed in the sack! Others, who did not have this coat, crammed their down coat into a pack where it took up space and was exposed to pointy objects in their packs. My stuff-sack-compressed coat dropped nicely into a little zip lock bag (to keep it dry) and took up almost no space. I recommend this to anyone serious about working in the outdoors for long periods of time. It seems every time I find a perfect outdoor item the company discontinues the item or makes some ‘improvement’ that ruins it, so I am planning to buy a second version of this jacket.

super light, designed for short people

By:
December 28, 2006

this jacket is as light as a lover's whisper, but the sleeves are very short, don't order it if you are an above-average-height female. Otherwise, if you're shorty and sporty, this thing will keep you warm and free.
