Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero Down Jacket - Men's - 2006

The Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero jacket surrounds you with 650-fill down for the coldest possible conditions this winter. Perfect for backcountry use, alpine climbing, or just kickin' around town, the Sub Zero is an incredible value from one of the true heavy hitters in outdoor clothing. You simply won't find down jackets of this quality at the Sub Zero's price. A nylon ripstop shell keeps this sweet jacket from exploding if you happen to snag it on a protruding rock fin or tree branch, and inset reinforcements at high-abrasion areas provide an extra amount of security. The fleece lined pockets keep those mitts extra toasty, and an inner zip security pocket is perfect for car keys or other valuables you can't afford to lose.

Bottom Line: From town to the backcountry, down is the call for ultimate warmth.

Ya brother....I'm down!

By:
November 30, 2007

Something about downs always terrified me! Perhaps it was the waking nightmare that Ghost Busters may have chased me down, and zapped me for looking like a walking, breathing marshmallow. I've always liked the idea of snug fitting jackets that give you freedom to move. Not to mention....just being totally honest here.....when I see people walking around in downs I think of walking, breathing sleeping-bags. But now I stand a changed man! I eat my own words. The Sub Zero vanquished my fears! Last couple of weeks here in Alaska it has gone up and down in temp. The jacket has held its own (low teens with a wind chill factor and on up to the 30's). I have no doubt with 200 fleece under the jacket I would be more then toasty in 40 below. The jacket is very sharp looking. My wife and daughter have proclaimed it their favorite jacket for dad! I have to agree! I love the comfort. I love the fleece lined pockets. I love the warmth. I love the style. I love that its not so marshmallowly (not so poofy). I love having an inside pocket and chest pocket for personal use. I love the fact that I stayed dry while taking my daughter out to sled as the wet snow dumped on us, and I love that I had freedom in movement Only down side so far is that I too have noticed that some of the very small down feathers are sneaking out of the seems. But until the day they all explode out and I look like a goose that just ate a hand grenade, I will hang on to this jacket. On a side note: I went a size up to take care of the waist problem some were having (people stated the jacket was not long enough for them). The velcro cuffs made the extra length of the sleeves a non-factor. So to answer the question before me....ya brother....I'm down!

I'm looking to buy a very good quality Down jacket that will stand up to wet/icy weather here in OKC,OK I'm trying to decide between a MH Sub Zero or a more costly brand (Western Mountaineering jacket, Flight Series with a true 850 plus down fill, Canadian made) Can anyone give me the heads up on which to buy.

Mike. I can't tell you which jacket to buy but I can tell you that the only difference between the down is the higher the number the lighter it is and higher the loft for a given volume. Another way to think of it... the higher the number the 'closer to the goose.' Down is warm whether it is 500 fill or the extremely elusive 850+ fill. I have jackets with both and they are both warm. If you are looking for a jacket to stand up to wet/icy weather... I would consider something with a waterproof/breathable laminate. Check out the Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero SL Hooded jacket for an example. It is made with waterproof and breathable laminate called 'Conduit' that keeps the majority of the weather off when it is wet and icy out. Hope this info helps!

Impressive

I ordered this jacket along with Mountain Hardware's Phantom, and I decided to keep the Phantom because I need to go as light as possible (15 oz vs. 24), but I was very impressed with the workmanship, the colour and the "feel" of the Subzero. Great job, Mountain Hardwear.

new jacket

By:
March 20, 2007

I finally broke down and bought a new winter coat. It's pretty good, fit is excellent, nice stitching in high quality fabric. It's a little warm at 35-40 degrees, but has kept me warm in 15 degree with fast wind. I like that.
Also it has just the right touch of pockets, not too many!

Short, but sweet!

By:
March 17, 2008

True to previous Mountain Hardware purchases, this jacket really is pragmatic and stylin', with a lot of obvious thought put into design and execution. I bought this jacket for my husband, who suffers from cold extremities, so the fleecy pockets were a great touch -- as was the reinforcement of areas that see abrasion. Alas, we returned the jacket because it was shorter in length than my husband wanted in a down jacket (sleeve length was great, though). I consider his proportions to be "normal."

Men's Sub Zero Down Jacket

By:
January 16, 2008

We got the jacket for our ever growing 14 year old son. He usually hates the winter clothing we get him. This jacket has changed that attitude! Yay! Thank you for designing a jacket that; according to our son, "Is light, super warm, and he has full range of movement that he has never experienced in winter clothing before. He has actually thanked us several times since he has gotten it.

Nice and Warm even in frigid temps

By:
January 4, 2008

Last year I bought The North Face Prodigy jacket which is basically a heavy Hyvent shell filled with 600 down. The jacket is great in wet weather but when it gets down to below zero, I was still really cold.

I live in NH and tend to get cold really easily, so I was on a mission to get a jacket that would keep me really warm. Well the Sub Zero has done the job. Today was 2 degrees and was -10 with the wind chill. It was so cold, my driver's side door was frozen shut. The Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero kept me really warm. I love it. I still haven't tested it in really high wind conditions, but I'm thinking it will do the job.

The jacket is a little on the shorter size but overall this is an awesome jacket.

Great Value

By:
February 13, 2007

For the money this jacket can't be beat, most comparable down jackets go for over $200. The reinforced shoulders and arms are a great feature, it's made for carrying a pack in cold weather. Hem draw-cord is OK, though it rides up sometimes. The elastic/hook and loop cuffs are comfy and snug, really nice. The stuff sack is cool, too. My XL weighs precisely 1.85lbs in the stuff sack, a lot of warmth for not a lot of weight (or dollars). A fleece chin-guard would be nice, but that's a minor deficiency; all in all it's a winner.

I've had this jacket for about a month now and all I can say is AMAZING! I live in northern Wisconsin and it's been downright cold lately. Low temp of 2-5 with a windchill of -10 to -15. I went out with the Sub-zero and a light baselayer (MH Hyperdry) and I was sweating after walking to town. The only thing that would make this coat better would be a longer torso. Other than that, it's a great coat and you shan't be dissappointed.

Are You Down?

By:
November 17, 2003

Okay so this is the first down jacket I have ever owned. I am not sure why it has taken me so long, but I am an avid outdoorsman, and a few weeks ago was outside in a pretty much stationary posture for a few hours at a zero degree temperature, and got colder than I have been in a long time. Since then I have purchased this blessed coat and have not been cold since. I spent a few hours in it the other night in like conditions and was very comfortable. I am very pleased. The jacket is awesome!!!

I think down jackets are the most versatile jackets around, and this mountain hardware sub-zero is the best one I've ever owned. I just fits me better the TNF jackets, and it keeps me warmer even though its 650 fill instead of 700. I would rate it a 5 if it had an intergrated hood and a fleece lined collar.

Light and Warm

By:
December 11, 2006

I was lucky enough to have had the first generation of the Mountain Hardware Sub Zero jacket. I have worn that jacket for over 10 years. It has served me well. Through an unfortunate event the back was torn. I repaired it with duct tape, but I was still motivated to replace it. The latest version has added a vertical chest zipper and contrasting reinforcements over high wear areas on the arms and shoulders. The Sub Zero remains light, packable and warm. It does seem my original had more loft and it certainly has more soul. The current Sub Zero jacket is well worth the moderate price. Mountain Hardware remains a maker of quality and functional outer ware.

All Around Winter Jacket

By:
October 25, 2004

Well designed jacket, almost perfect for on & off use, very packable for air travel, and as warm as advertised. I use for commute to city high rise office, as well as to exercise and train dogs in open country. Would be a 5-star if the area over kidneys had more volume...a little light there, and should have the same kind of snag resistant fabric for the waist band as the shoulders and arms...it is a high wear area. Fleece pockets are very nice, as is the position of the Napolean pocket, easy access and room for glasses and cell phone. Can't have everything, so for the cost, it is a great value.

Greatest Jacket Ever

February 3, 2005

My mountain hardwear sub zero down jacket was one of the best clothing purchases of my life. I have not been cold since I received it in the mail. It's extremely comfortable, extremely portable (you can stuff it into the included sack, which it about the size of a medium size football). The fleece lined pockets are definitely clutch in the biting cold. It also has two other pockets (which are great for your stash).

Mountain Hardwear is Hardcore

March 15, 2005

Just a lil’ background, I have owned Mountain Hardwear jackets for the last 10 years. I am a wildland fire fighter during the summer and an avid skier/mountaineer by winter. You will never find me without my Subzero or Chughach jackets wherever I am. Both jackets have lived up to the test of the mountains and the fire world. So they can probably take what ever you dish out to them..:D

Great coat! I am a huge MH fan. Having said that, the jacket could be improved by the addition of a microfleece chin liner. I've had a few tiny feathers poke through but not enough that I'm concerned. Very compressible. Best coat out there for the money. Very warm.

I wish I could claim to have worn this jacket on my latest alpine expedition, but it has seen most its use getting me to work on icy winter mornings. For the price, it is an excellent jacket. My only regret is that I bought a M when I should have got an L. The M fits fine, except it is a little short in the torso, which means you have to be careful reaching up for things! The quality is excellent. I have stuffed the jacket into its bag over 100 times this winter and it still fluffs up like new. As stated above, the fleece lined pockets are great. Highly recommended.

Almost perfect!

By:
March 23, 2006

I bought this jacket for my husband this winter. He loves my TNF Nuptse, but neither of us wants to look like twins, so I shopped for something comparable but different. This jacket fits the bill. It's very lightweight and collapsible, but husband says it's toasty warm. He says it's very comfortable to wear and doesn't feel bulky. The quality is excellent, especially for the price. The fabric seems durable, the seams are tight, and the zippers are sturdy. No problems with feathers leaking or shifting. The styling is great too. The contrast colors and textures add interest without being too busy-looking. There are many generously-sized pockets inside and out. The shape is very masculine and boxy without looking too puffy or bulky. The only changes my husband says he would make would be to add fleece lining inside the collar and to make the overall length an inch or two longer. Those things would make it a perfect 5-star jacket, but he loves it anyway. Great purchase!

Sub Zero Rocks

By:
December 12, 2006

This jacket is great. I have the North Face 700 fill and this 650 fill is warmer. The fleece lined pockets are a great touch. The chest pocket is in the perfect place and the inside pocket is an added bonus. The only thing that would make this jacket better would be a detatchable down hood. I snow shoe, winter camp, hunt and run around town in this thing and it is at home in all. I give it an A and would recomment to anyone considering Th North Face.

Sub Zero down jacket

By:
January 10, 2006

Nice coat and quite warm, I bought this as opposed to the North Face. The quality seems good and durable, and I'm happy with it except for the fact that the coat seems to be losing the down bit by bit, which I am quite disappointed with. It makes me wonder if I should contact Mountain Hardwear about it. My buddy bought TNF and he has had no such problem. I usually layer it underneath my Arcteryx shell, and I've been nice and warm in the 20F weather in Ohio, usually with a light shirt and maybe a sweater underneath. I'd give it a 5 if it was not losing feathers.

Mountain Hardwear Sub-Zero

By:
February 21, 2006

This was my first time ordering here and I was very happy with how quickly they shipped my jacket. And they shipped it for free. The Sub-Zero from Mountain Hardwear is all I hoped for, the looks, the craftsmanship, but best of all it so warm and light. I will mention that I ordered the carbon color and it is really dark green. I have a Sub-Zero Vest that is grayish and I thought I was ordering the same thing. For some reason the color described as carbon I think of as more gray and your photo did not look green at all. Oh well, not a huge deal I just thought I would mention it in case someone else does not like dark green. Thanks for everything !

I bought this jacket last year at end of season, and wish I had had it all my life!! It’s light, and compresses to nothing. The armored shoulders are nice, and the fit is one of the best I have ever worn. Super warm for 650 fill, and no feathers flying out every time you put it on. Super recommendation!!!

UPDATE: Western Mountaineering is faaaaaar superior to any other down products on the market. Be it their jackets or sleeping bags. I have purchased the hooded meltdown and, oh my god is it badass!!!

This jacket not only looks cool, it's warm and has some great features. The burley shoulders and sleeves make it so you don't have to worry about snags, and it comes with a stuff sack. You can cinch the draw cord at the waist to keep the warm in and stuff your hands into the fleece lined comfy pockets.
The only thing I don't like about the jacket is that anything you put in the chest pocket feels kinda funny.

ok but not stellar...

By:
December 15, 2006

This jacket is ok, but mine really has that 'made in china' feel to it. The material inside is like a very cheap tent. Loose threads were sticking out in quite a few places (as were down feathers) when I got it. It is also surprisingly short. I am 5'11" so I ordered the large and it barely makes it to my belt-line. Any untucked shirt will stick out the bottom (which looks kinda weird). For the price it isn't too bad (it's warm) but it certainly isn't the best jacket out there as some of the other reviewers seem to believe. Try before you buy.

This is the first down jacket I have really owned, and I can't really understand why I have waited so long. I have been using it now in -12 Celcius in Norway, keeps me warm even when I am standing still for 10-15 minutes. I like the fact that it does not have a hood, makes it more versatile in the city. On the negative side is that it is a bit heavier than The North Face.

December 3, 2004

I like this jacket a lot. It has kept me warm during the few cold fronts we had out in N.Y. The only thing I didn't like is that it seems the stitching on the jacket isn't that great. I find long threads every now and then, and I have cut the threads a few times near the zipper because it kept getting stuck.

Botton line though is that it does keep you very warm...which is the reason why we buy these things right?

This is a great piece. It's uber-warm. I wore it under a down jacket in -30C weather and was toasty. To be honest, it was overkill. A (windproof) shell would've been fine. It works alone, although it's not windproof. I've worn this with a windproof vest, and it's a perfect combo. Warm, but still vents air. It fits tight, which is great for layering. Great sleeve design. Stretchy. And it's um...fuzzy.

Meets expectations, could improve

By:
June 26, 2008

Ok, its a Down jacket and you´d expect it to keep you warm in very cold weather. The jacket does exactly that. I used it in the Cordillera Blanca in Peru for the first time in a 5 day trek, low temps but not extremely low or rainy. The jacket warms you up rapidly and keeps you that way as long as you may need. I would definitely suggest checking the length because it is a couple of inches short, and that may mean your waist can get really cold. (The North Face equivalent doesn´t have that problem). It also leaks very few feathers and I believe it would not do very well in rainy conditions (of course you should have an outer shell or pay more for the water resistant jacket). If its length is not an issue for you, I definitely would recommend it.
