Throw on your Marmot Gravity Softshell Jacket and head out for a hike. Try to be patient, though—your friends will be trying a ton of different layer and shell combinations along the way to get that perfect combination while you stand and wait comfortably by the side of the trail. It’s not their fault, though, so remember not to get aggravated.
Wind-resistant, water-repellant, highly breathable Marmot M2 softshell allows your body to naturally regulate temperature
Four-way stretch gives you a full range of motion without binding the jacket around the shoulders or straining the fabric
Hook-and-loop cuffs for customizable fit
Adjustable hem-cord keeps the wind from blowing up into the jacket
Marmot has always been an A+ in my book and they've done it again. The Gravity is their bestselling jacket for a reason. Used it the other weekend for a trip and it decided to do a little raining and the jacket held up nicely beading the water droplets and brushed off easily. The liner is warm and comfortable and has a handy pocket too. An overall stellar jacket.
I love this jacket for wearing around town, at work, etc. It has a great form-fitting look, provides some warmth and general protection from the elements, and is durable. HOWEVER, it is NOT wind-resistant enough for skiing, at least in weather below around 25 degrees. The wind cuts through it pretty easily.
Gravity vs Alchemy Can anyone compare the Marmot Gravity to MHW Alchemy? They weigh and cost about the same. Primary uses would be cold weather (Wisconsin) hiking, snowshoeing, cross country skiing. Breathability and wind resistance are key.
Both are great brands, The Alchemy appearing more "technical" and the Gravity being more "clean". You mentioned wind being a factor, the Alchemy uses Gore Winsdstopper fabric, perhaps you should be comparing the MHW Alchemy to the Marmot Super hero (MAR1240) Which also has Gore Windstopper. Other than the price difference, here's what what I have to end on: When everybody's doing the same thing, it comes down to style.
this is my most versatile piece of gear right now. athletic fit, but not so tight that you cant layer a thermal and fleece underneath. perfect length to wear a likewise athletic fitting shell over top. i was perfectly comfortable wearing the gravity with a midweight thermal & midweight fleece in 20 degree & cloudy weather. breathes exceptionally well, even when i did sweat after a hard run (in 45 degrees and sunny), i was always dry by the top of the chairlift. i especially appreciate that there are no pit zips bulking up the fabric under my arms. the whole obsession with pit zips is rather illogical for any shell, but its utterly ridiculous for a highly breathable softshell. if you ever get too hot, just open the biggest vent you got: the front zipper!!
Hi - I love the Gravity but I´m looking for a Marmot softshell that is slightly lighter/thinner. Does anyone know which one I should go for? Sharp Point, Leadville, Approach?
The gravity is 26.5", the Sharp Point (MAR0881) is longer at 27.5" and the marmot Andromeda (sorry no length info on that)appears to be longer with it's drop hem in the back.
I've had it for about a year, and if it's below 50°F, there's probably a 98% chance that I'm wearing this jacket. I've taken it on many a backpacking trip, and it's my go-to jacket when it gets chilly. I bought it to replace a Marmot fleece, and while it's a hair less warm, it blocks the wind MUCH better than the fleece did.
I love the look, love the wind-resistance, and love that it's warm-but-not-too-warm. I also love the low price I paid for it on backcountryoutlet (I think around $80? can't really remember).
All that said, there are just a few qualms I have with it that keep me from giving it five stars. First, the weight: I do a lot of backpacking, and while I love it when I'm wearing it, it adds significant weight to my pack, and leaves me wishing for something lighter. Second, the pockets are not accessible while wearing a pack or harness, and that's just dumb. Third, and most importantly, there are no Pit-Zips. Add the ability to vent heat, and I would probably forget the first two things and give it five stars, but after wearing it recently on a strenuous hike in 4°F, I was seriously wishing for some heat-dumping capability.
This and the Leadville are about the same price, what are the differences between these two jackets? Which is warmer, which breathes better, which is heavier and more bulky? In essence, which is the better jacket, the better buy?
Leadville is primarily Gore N2S and Gravity is a fleece backed stretch fabric called Quicksilver. Gravity is warmer due to fleece lining. Leadville will breath better because the N2S is designed to move moisture away from the skin. Gravity is both heavier and bulkier. That said, Gravity will be best if you want warmth and the Leadville will be best if you want light weight, breathable. Only other caveat is that the N2S fabric (found in main body) is windproof versus the Quiksilver which is wind resistant.
Had to return this jacket. Nothing to do with the quality or anything like that...although I didn't get to test it out, it appeared plenty warm and weather resisitant for my needs. It was just too big for my standard medium body! Once This site has it back in stock in medium I will definitely consider buying it. Delivery was, as usual, prompt and problem free!
Great jacket, but be aware that the listed weight of 936 grams is the correct one. That translates to 2 lbs 1 oz, not 1 lb 1 oz. This is significantly heavier than some of the other Marmot offerings, which could be good or bad depending on what you are looking for.
This jacket is very comfortable and has good construction but the fit is not what is advertised. I got the XL and the length is wayy to short, about down to my belly button or waist. Also im 6 4 200 pounds and the jacket was a tight fit for an XL. not a well put together jacket for taller people.
I am a big guy and fortunately Marmot fits me and allows me moveability, Gravity is fantastic and the fit is good, use for cool/cold weather commuting on my bike. Good wind/water resistance and breaths well.
I bought this jacket today, immediately before going skiing. Last time I wore a Marmot Driclime as my midlayer, I was getting cold. Today with the Gravity, I was toasty all day, from standing in line for a lift ticket until I stopped for the day. I stopped for dinner after my day of skiing, had a long walk to my car and was still warm. I love this jacket. Well-priced, fashionable (somewhat fitted, well-designed stitching, cool looking pockets, etc.), and most importantly very functional. It was at most 24 degrees F without wind chill factor today at the warmest...
