Marmot Sawtooth Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Down - 2006
The Sawtooth has all of the features and bombproof construction that you've come to expect from Marmot. This 15-degree mummy bag uses a 600-fill down to bring you all the warmth and comfort of nature's best insulator. Marmot has added their X-static draft tube to block cold air from sneaking into this highly compactable bag. You won't accidentally unzip your bag, as you toss and turn, with the help of locking two-way zippers. Now you can sleep easy in this updated version of Marmot's award winning sleeping bag.
Bottom Line: The Marmot Sawtooth is suitable for any 3-season use. Take it backpacking, bike touring or car camping.
This bag kept me warm this fall when the temp dropped to bout 20-25 deg, even when others were complaining about the temp I was warm all the time. Haven't used it below 15 but im sure it would be fine if I wear a sweatshirt or something. There is a little bit of a funky smell to it but doesnt bother me.
Just got mine. Only Im not one who can sleep on my back with arms on chest not moving an inch all night, so I got the x wide and long (imp 6'1") I love the size I mean LOVE IT! But it does smell a little. I got my wife a Sierra Designs womens Sun Ribbon down 600, and it doesnt smell at all. The smell is not REALY bad though but reminds me of a farm, I dont know if its the down quality or what, but honestly I noticed the smell ONCE and have not even thought about it since, those other reviews seem to me exaggerative. I also dont like the thin spots in down coverage, I know down shifts but, again my wifes is not like that. Could be related to the X wide though. Any ways I do like the bag, but I think Im just in love with size!! You wont find a bigger mummy bag I've looked and researched like crazzy!! The only other thing that even comes close is the Feathered Friends high quality rectangular bag but even that is only 65inch girth all the way down, and it costs way more. I gave it a 4 because of good price.
I have had this bag for about a month and have used it about 20 of those nights now. I am very impressed with it, it is very user friendly and comfortable. The price was right. I have not had the occasion to use it in any weather below 30 degrees (summertime), but am not too worried. It breathes well and when unzipped can be used in fairly warm weather, making it a versatile bag.
Toasty. I used this bag rated to 20 degrees F to sleep in my Vanagon in a parking lot in Big Bear California. My min temp registering thermometer recorded 15 degrees Fahrenheit. It was a little cool but I survived.
The Marmot Sawtooth extrawide bags are very comfortable--my wife, 10 month old son, and I slept in a zipped-together pair. My only complaint is that the Sierras were too hot for them this summer, so I had to leave them open on top.
I recently purchased 2 Marmot Sawtooth down bags from BackcountryStore.com to use at the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. I purchased a long for my son and a long wide for myself. I love everything about the bags EXCEPT the fact that the down appears to have a foul odor. It reminded me of the smell of a wet dog. The bags did not get wet and they were new and hadn't been slept in yet. Without the odor, I'd rate these a 5. Has anyone else experienced this and if so, what did you do about it?
I bought the Sawtooth in March '04 and used it in the southern Appalachians in April '04. It wasn't too humid, but as it got more humid overnight mine started to smell exactly like wet dog. I called Marmot and they said it should not do that - I just shipped it to them today for replacement or washing or whatever they care to do.
This bag is warm! I was in it to 25 degrees and while everyone else was shivering I was hot enough to open the zipper a little bit. It is very light and compressible. The smallest I've been able to get it is the size of a large grapefruit. There is only one thing that gives it a 4 instead of a 5 - it doesn't have a draft collar. I'm not sure why Marmot decided not to include one, so far it hasn't been a problem at all.
I experienced just the same as Jackpine Savage wrote. I purchased a Marmot Sawtooth down bag four months ago and left it out of the little bag until the beginning of my six month trip early in January. I didnt notice the smell in the beginning, but now it smells like unwashed feet or wet dog, its awful! I just cant send it back to Marmot for Ill need it soon. I hope the smell will disappear with time or use??? Looks like the bag is a fine one anyway, and I hope Ill be able to sleep with that smell under my nose.
