Lowe Alpine Snow Attack 20+5 Backpack - 1200cu in - 2008

Lowe Alpine uses an expanding volume design to make the Snow Attack 20 Backpack a solid choice for backcountry ski day trips. Its 1200cu inch main compartment expands by another 300cu inches when you open a single zipper. This allows you to pack an extra layer or snacks for your dawn patrol. The Snow Attack Backpack's diagonal ski carry holds your planks on the approach while the molded back panel supports the load. This Lowe Alpine pack also has a shovel pocket to keep your avalanche necessities available.

Bottom Line: Expand the Lowe Alpine Snow Attack Backpack to hold an extra water bottle and a fleece.

Looks great on paper, but not so much in the field.

In sum, the Snow Attack from Lowe Alpine gets the job done. As an owner of other gear from them, I was quite disappointed with the construction of this pack. While it has plenty room for shovel, probe, skins, two sets of goggles, two Nalgene bottles, and camera, a few things are troublesome. First, the shoulder suspension system is INSIDE the pack. I can't think of any reason for this as you need to adjust the straps accordingly. With skis on my pack, I tend to pull it tight so the skis are set high, but while making my way downhill, I prefer the pack to have a lowered feel for a more comfortable ride. Second, the pack seems more fit for someone with a smaller torso. And lastly, there were multiple times when the zipper to the fleece compartment on the top of the pack came undone. There is absolutely no excuse for that and I would be cautious about what to place in that particular pocket.

You could probably find a way to attach them using the helmet loops or something, but the pack is designed to attach skis to in a diagonal configuration. I don't think the ski tail loop shown in the user pic below is long enough to fit showshoe tails, but it might be. The Lowe Alpine Fall Line 35 might be a better option for showshoes.

Great day-trip skiers backcountry bag

This my day trip ski bag of choice. The carrying system for lashing skis onto the pack is foolproof and easy to use. It stows away in a hidden pocket when not needed too. The adjustable shoulder strap feature is great for dialing in the pack size and only needs to be adjusted once to fit your particular body. The pack has plenty of room and organization for my avalanche pro and the bag is built to last. If more room is needed for extra layers on a cold day, the pack expands and almost doubles in size with a hidden zipper. It has a large and lined goggle/phone/glasses pocket and the super strong grab handle on top works great with gloves on. I keep this one loaded and ready to go in my car at all times during the winter. Highly recommended.
