I desperately needed (wanted?) a long coat to replace a down one that died two years ago. However, being that it rains a bit too much in the area of 34 degrees F to 37 F, I needed a synthetic--not a down. Along came Louise, and I have found a friend that, after one day puttering around outside, I know I will cherish. Fabulous jacket. Terrific price and cozy and warm. Hooray! I'm halfway tempted to buy a closetful just so I know I'd always have one.

This coat is a great deal - cheaper here than several other places I looked -- and is awesomely cozy for walking from the train station to work in blustery Chicago. Light weight but warm and nice zippered handwarmer pockets behind the buttoned patch pockets.

No. Well, maybe if you layered 3 or 4 of them it would. -40 is really really cold. You're going to need some serious layering, and even so it's hard to stay warm. If you're actually going to be in that kind of weather, something like the Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero or other such hardcore jacket (http://www.backcountry.com/store/MHW0443/Mountain-Hardwear-Sub-Zero-SL-Hooded-Down-Jacket-Womens.html) is the way to go. If that was just a typo, and you meant 40 degrees (as in ABOVE zero), then yes, this is a good mid-weight jacket for that kind of temperature.
