Weighing in at just 5 ounces yet still packing the crucial tools, the Leatherman Skeletool crushes other multi-tools into bone dust. This four inch multi-tasker with a stainless steel blade might save your life, or it might just help you look cooler. Leave the paper clips, mullets, defusing bombs, and hostage rescues to Angus MacGyver, and carry the Leatherman Skeletool for daily use.
Bottom Line: Dude, if Skeletor had a Skeletool, He-Man would be skeletoast.
I have 4-5 other multi-tools, but couldn't resist buying the Skeletool as it looks so cool. And, I haven't been disappointed as it is the favorite of my collection. One nice feature of it is that you can quickly and easily open the knife, which is the most common tool that I use. The blade can be opened one handed, which is a great feature. Like all Leatherman tools, the fit, finish and overall design are excellent. The pliers close down perfectly at the tip, which means they can almost be used as tweezers.
The screwdrivers are OK and totally functional, but a bit skinny and lightweight for something like tightening a ski binding screw, but still, they would work.
My initial impression on opening the box was that the Skeletool was smaller than I expected. This is no big deal, but for some reason photos of it make it look beefier. For reference, the knife blade is 2.5" long, which is about 3/4 the length of a credit card.
The thing I liked least about it was the add-on bottle opener/clip hook on the end. I can open bottles many other ways, don't need a secondary clip-in point (the tool already has a side clip) and it just adds length to the unit, as well as a sharpish tail end. But, Leatherman has come out with a new model, the Freestyle, which is the same thing as the Skeletool sans bottle opener. I'll probably have to get that one as well. :)
This is the best multitool I've tried. Over the years I've had swiss army knives, an original leatherman, little leathermen, CRKT knives (great knives, but they aren't multi-tools). They have all been too heavy or too bulky to carry on a regular basis.
The Skeletool is a great exception. It is light enough to carry all the time. It has the carabiner to attach to a harness or radio pack (I actually bought it to use for ski patrolling), plus a clip to secure it in your pocket. It is light enough that I don't notice it in my pocket (I have the CX one, but I think they are both the same weight). The blade is sharp and functional, plus it opens with one finger, locks open and closes with one hand. You don't need to unfold the tool to access the blade either. The pliers work as advertised and the wire cutters clip zip-ties with aplomb. I picked up the bit kit because I wanted to have a 5mm allen key to be able to adjust/tighten my snowboard bindings which use a 5mm allen for all adjustments. I love that I can have one tip in the bit tip and one hidden in the handle. I don't have to carry the bit kit around with me or toss the extra bit in and risk losing it.
I sort of miss having a scissors in the tool, but I've found I can manage most tasks with the knife.
So far it has survived a camping trip to Yosemite - which included rock climbing where I finally got the first scratches on the tool, gutting and filleting four trout, and opening a six-pack worth of Fat Tire. A little bonus: the carabiner spring catches and hangs onto the bottle caps so you don't have to pick them up off the ground after you open a bottle!
Note: the current picture on this site shows a flat/razor blade. My CX came with a combo serrated/flat blade.
Not really a question - I just thought it is worth pointing out that Leatherman is explicit about the blade being made from 154CM, not 420C - and 154CM is a significantly superior steel.
They actually should not change it. The Skeletool is 420hc steel the Skeletool CX is 154cm. Just depends on the model and this one says only Skeletool.
First off I have the CX version, which isn't really that different from the normal version except for the carbon inserts, and the partially serrated blade. They both weight the same though, so I bought it mostly for the serrated blade, which comes in handy if you need to slice webbing or rope quickly. Some people like a tool with more functions, but if you are really going into the backcountry you will probably bring bigger tools. The functions on here can do a large number of functions. I can do all my binding repairs, or most gear repairs during day trips skiing with just this.
They don't normally come with a gift box but you can call their toll free number & ask to see if they're available: 800-847-8665 I believe you can add a gift box during checkout for a small fee.
nothing you don't. This tool is perfect for what 99% of people use their Leathermans for. The pliers and knife work great. The driver portion takes a little experimenting to figure out how you like to use it, but once you get it dialed in it's great.
I have the CX (carbon fiber) version of this which functionally is exactly the same but sheds some weight. This minimal tool is light enough that I find that I carrying it around more often than the full Leatherman. Has the basic tools necessary to carry out most repairs and I have not yet found myself wishing that I had carried a larger tool more often.
Best multi-tool I've bought. Great blade (filleted 3 trout with it), the 'biner is great, and I love having mini-hex wrench with me for bindings (Bomber). Great construction, very durable so far (hiking, climbing, bc skiing).
Light enough to carry everyday on a pocket or a bag, several tools, and great sharp knife, thought about a zilla tool or a crkt knife, but this one has more tools, is lighter and last but not least better looking You wont regret it, as its a nice design and more than anything, a light but great tool
Like the name says this is the skeletal verion of a multi tool. I carry a multi-tool with just about everyday. I have used Gerber, Leatherman and SOG. As far as construction goes, this tool is bomber. It is sturdy and tough...what you would expect from Leatherman. Where this tool really shines is in the BC. It is light enough to toss in a pack and then when you need it you have it. I would not use this as my everyday tool, while it is built well, I just dont think it would hold up to the abuse I dish out on a daily basis. But, like I said, if you are looking for a backpacking/backcountry tool, this is it.
I am now on my second Skeletool after the first one got legs. Apparently, someone else appreciated the utility of this multi-tool as much as I did!
I have found this tool to be a great combination of size, functionality and weight. It has all of the basics you could want - enough to tackle any job required one way or another. And isn't that the point?
You can certainly opt for more features in other models or other tools, but you have to draw the line somewhere. And if you need more, hey just carry your tool box.
I have used this tool while backpacking, working, hiking and biking. It gives you a lot of features without adding too much bulk or weight.
What I really needed in a multi-tool, besides knife and pliers, was a Pozidrive #3 bit and a Torx T10 bit for servicing Dynafits in the field. The skinny one Pozidrive provided with the $20 BitKit was pretty wimpy, so I ended up grinding a real one down to fit.
Overall, the Skeletool looks cool, and the knife and pliers are way burlier than those of the Juice series, though the bottle opener/biner hanger is a waste of space since I never hang the thing off my belt and don't take glass bottles into the BC.
As someone who has had four other Leatherman products over the years, to include still having the Wave(my favorite)this is real good for pocket carry. Just don't buy this one for the tools unless you are just wanting the basics; pliers, blade and screw drivers. I haven't had this one long enough to truly put it to work, but it does have the quality construction of all Leatherman products I have come to expect. My only concern is the keeper for the extra screwdriver bit, it seems not be very secure so I would recommend caution when using the 'biner attachment. The price is also a bit steep for such a basic tool (I only bought it because it was on sale)but if it something you would want I would say go ahead and get it, after all it is a Leatherman.
It's a great pocket tool. Easy to carry so it's always there. Pliers are smaller than I'm used to, but I wasn't rebuilding an engine with my pocket tool anyway.
I have the CX model which first off looks damn badass. It has your basics and weighs way less compared to my old swiss army multi-tool. It feels clever and well thought out. I almost always have it available with me from day to day activities to snowboarding to camping. Cost is well... expensive. But so far I feel it was worth the expense.
