i'm looking for a backpack that can comfortably carry my 15 inch macbook pro, all cords & a few other things, book, water, camera, makeup, etc. on weekend trips. will this work?

I highly doubt this will work for a laptop. It has the mesh venting in back which creates a curved frame - not laptop friendly. You are better off looking for packs that are specific for carrying laptops - we have a North Face Recon and love it.
