Kelty Redwing Backpack - 2650-3100cu in

Whether you take it as a carry-on for an international flight or load it up for a light overnighter, the Kelty Redwing Backpack comfortably and conveniently carries your gear thanks to its lightweight suspension system and ample pockets. Slide your reservoir into the hydration pocket, organize your essentials in the front pocket, and take to the trails. The venting back panel, waist belt, and shoulder straps help you stay cool on hot summer hikes, and the two zippered side pockets keep your multi-tool and energy bars handy.

Bottom Line: A versatile hauler for hiking or travel.

Review Title

I bought this for my husband to take out on our day-hikes and he loved it right out the Backcountry box. The pockets are conveniently placed and it sits super comfortably on him. He has never once had a complaint after six months of use (he loves it for weekend camping trips also) and that's the best review ever.

So where does a person hang the hydration bag once the bladder

So where does a person hang the hydration bag once the bladder bag is placed into the reservoir sleeve?? There is no where to hang the bag. Am I missing something here????

There's no hook for it, so if that's something you really want in a bag this is not the one.

You don't hang it, you just put it in the sleeve and leave it.

Reliable as the sun

For all of it's flaws, I still love this pack for the simple reason that it is tough as nails. I bought one as my first backpacking pack and it saw many miles. It has a lot of organization to it with several pockets, nice compression straps, and gear loops sewn on the bottom (at least my generation did). Plus I LOVE the Schaefer cinch on the waist belt. Unfortunately the biggest problem with this pack is the waist belt. There is just not enough padding on it to carry weight comfortably. I moved to a Gregory as my multi-day pack, but still use this all the time for air travel, trail work, car camping, 4x4 trips, etc, etc... If I had to define the redwing, I'd call it a work/utility pack with a little bit of trail blood mixed in. Hats off to Kelty for workhorse of a pack with top notch quality for a very reasonable price.

Yes, it can handle a 100oz reservoir. As to whether it takes up too much space in the pack... well, that depends. Figure the full hydration pack will take up 7% - 8% of your total listed volume on the 2650, and 6% - 7% on the 3100, assuming you have the full use of the manufacturer's listed volume. If carrying slightly less than 10% of your load volume as water works for you, then you have enough space. If you are using this as a typical day pack or passable-weather overnight pack, it should not take up too much space.

A little rock climbing

Ladders are for pansies. The bag was more than enough for hiking Cannon mountain.

Try It On....

By:
April 26, 2009

Looks like a pack that can handle just about anything. Liked all the extra pockets,(expect they took away from the main compartment in (cu.in.)So it made the main compartment smaller than I expected it to be. Don't really need the front panel pocket or half the size.. No hydration bag hook inside the water sleeve to hold the water bag up right(If that might matter to some.)The colors could be alittle darker..1300 fit me nicely at a 18.5in. torso....Just need to try it on....

Yes, the waistbelt is removable. It is held in place with some very strong velcro. You can also fine-tune your adjustment of the waistbelt by moving it slightly up or down for that same reason.

Estimation....

By:
April 6, 2009

Estimation: give up 700cu.in. to smaller pockets/panel pocket and this leaves the main compartment with
2400cu.in. Great pack but need a larger main compartment. This pack with all it's pockets can haul alot of gear. This 3100 would be my second choice to what I've already ordered. Color it black with no reflecting colors(Gray areas)and it would make a great hunting back-pack....A well made pack with quilty materials....

IN THE GRAY....

By:
April 2, 2009

Returned: Way to many loose strap ends and the gray colored areas were way to light in color.. (Alot of pockets and the removable waist-belt is a plus, The options for water bottles or hydration bag is another great move by Kelty.) Maybe a solid colors would change my mind about buying this backpack again..(Black or a darker woods green.)

Good multi-purpose pack

By:
June 7, 2009

I'm using this pack everyday to collect creek water samples in several creeks in the Idaho wilderness. Also for one or two day overnight trips. I can stuff a lot into this pack and all the smaller pouches are nice.
It's a comfortable pack and so far seems well constructed.

The only thing I would like to see it a better hydration pack design. It's merely a layer of nylon sewn as a pouch that I put my water bladder into. I wish that it was thicker material to protect the bladder from my gear and/or an insulated wall to keep the water cool.
