The Kelty Quartz 4 is a simple, lightweight tent for all seasons. Configured with two doors and two vestibules, the floorplan maximizes the available living space. Two DAC pressfit poles slide into vaulted pole sleeves and once engaged a patented FlyBoy anchoring system prevents stretching or movement, even in high winds. The vented ripstop rainfly has a clear window so you can check out the weather without opening up (unless, of course, its iced over or you're snowed under). Versatile, the fly can be set up alone or with a footprint [KEL0301] for an ultralight shelter. Other features include closable mesh panels and taped seams to keep out the elements, internal storage pockets and gear loft loops to help you keep organized, noiseless zipper pulls and an easy buckle tent/fly connection.
Bottom Line: A safe haven in the nastiest of conditions.
I've owned this tent for a few years. It's not a 4 person tent. I would recommend this for 3 with gear in the vestibule or 2 with gear in the tent. You might be able to fit a 4th person if they are less than 4ft tall. The sleeved pole design can become frustrating at times. Otherwise this tent is bomb proof. It never leaked even with a river of water streaming under the tent. The vestibules size is very generous.
We recently purchased this tent to winter camp in the Smokey Mountains. It was a pain to put the tent up. The fly zipper stuck and then broke. It took 15 minutes to fix it. The poles stuck as we were taking the tent down. It was too narrow inside and there is NO WAY 4 people could fit in that comfortably. There would have to be 2 regular size adults and 2 midgets and I think they wouldn't even be comfortable!!!! I dont think the tent was a 4 season tent either. The only thing that kept us warm in 12 degree weather were our sleeping bags and the campfire. I would not recommend this tent to anyone who plans to camp in this temperature or anything below. Not happy......
I expect to mostly be camping in non-alpine climates without snow. However, I want a quality tent that can handle most weather conditions including freezing rainy weather while hiking or canoeing in the southeast, hot summer conditions, and/or snow if I wind up going to the mountains. Is this tent versatile enough or will I need a lighter tent for the South?
The one thing you lose with 4 season tents is some breathability - these things tend to get a little clammy if it's hot and muggy. But if you truly are going to use it in such variable conditions, and want something that is adequate (if not ideal) in all, go for it. You can also always take the fly off for some better ventilation.
I would have to agree that it is definately not a four person tent. I find it very adequate for two people plus we put our dog on one of the ends. It was nice having an entrance on both sides, something I have never had. We are not sure however how to tighten up the rain fly on the ends so it doesn't flap. We have only used it once at the end of the season so I'm sure we will figure it out in time.
There aren't too many 4 person backpacking tents out there, and even fewer 4-season tents for under this price, but this is one of them. Fits four, but the person sleeping perpendicular should be on the shorter size. This tent has a nice rain fly, and two vestibles. The vestibles are large enough that we were able to put packs in one, and shoes in the other.
