Simply put, the Kelty Mantra 7 Tent is the first word in durable, comfortable family camping tents. Unlike lesser family tents, the Mantra uses high quality DAC aluminum poles and a mix of clip and sleeve construction, for a mix of toughness and ventilation in wind and weather for years to come. You don't buy a Mantra for the weekend, you buy one of these collapsible mansions for life. Double doors, each with noiseless zipper pulls, let everyone do their nighttime business without disturbing the rest of the tent, and an immense vestibule (accessible from either door) holds all your extra gear under shelter. The interior of the Mantra 7 can be divided into two rooms with the removable privacy panel, with each half having its own door. Taped floor seams mean the Mantra can literally be sitting in a couple inches of water and nobody inside will notice. The Mantra's poles and clips are color-coded so you aren't standing at the campsite scratching your head, and thoughtful details like the interior organizer wall give a level of polish seldom seen in a car camping tent. If you're camping with a big group, or just want a lot of space, the Mantra should be the first tent you grab for.
Bottom Line: Admit it, you've lived in apartments smaller than this.
Good tent, quality construction, tight seams, no glaring issues. BUT The poles are thick and hard to feed through the fabric. Set-up is more difficult than it need be. The ample screen windows have no fabric 'curtains' to zip shut. When using this tent in cold weather the drafts were obscene. (The rain fly is well ventilated, as well it should be, and does nothing to minimize a draft). Other thoughts: The over-all design, with it's large vestibule is very functional. Can put a potty in the vestibule when camping with children. It's spacious, but 7 people are NOT going to be able to sleep in it unless packed in like the slave ship sardine illustration on the instructions. These illustrations are ghoulishly funny when you start to really look at them, btw. Am surprised they don't stack the little mummy bags 3 deep and say 21 people will fit. Over-all; good car camping family tent for up to 4-5 people.
My husband and I have taken this tent on several bicycle trips. At night we store our bikes in the vestibule, and are able to get in and out. While he stakes the tent, I set up the poles. We can set up/ take down in minutes. We were in a severe thunderstom with high winds. Other tents around us were blown down and broken. This one held up and we stayed dry!
I picked one of these up after spending years bouncing from Coleman to Coleman. I didn't think a tent could be made that was waterproof, yet here one is. Its plenty roomy with two additional storage pockets on the ends that they don't mention. Theres great ventilation with the rain fly on. Im definitely not going to putting one of these in a backpack and taking off, but it does pack down nicely in its own bag (8x12x20 est.) I'm guessing it will be the last tent I buy for many years to come. The only problem I have is the lack of privacy when the rain fly is taken off as the roof is entirely mesh. Still not enough to take it down from a 5 though.
Maybe I got a lemon based on the other reviews, but our experience with this tent was not good. First of all, when it started to rain and we put on the rain fly, it got very humid and uncomfortable inside, theres no ventilation at all. Then, one of those cheap 50 cent pole clips that holds up the roof broke and the tent sagged and was not stable after that. There is no way to repair it other than to cut and re-sew the material. We staked it out anticipating winds, but sure enough it blew over twice and we had to get out and reset the tent. Fortunately it had stopped raining but still we got no sleep that night. I would not recommend this tent, sorry.
I purchased this tent and immediately set it up in the backyard. It was cumbersome, but it is possible for one person to set up the tent. I was surprised at how tight the tent body was, and it was difficult to get the poles into the pins.
The first use was with 4 adults and 1 kid in a pack-and-play. I liked the partition curtain with two separate rooms. After a light overnight rain, I was somewhat surprised to see significant moisture on the underside of the fly. I figured it was condensation.
After a couple more uses, the tent was still extremely tight. I noticed that the corners of the tent were starting to get stressed at the stitching. A call was made to Kelty, and they offered to shorten the poles and fix the corner stitching.
I tried the tent after it was "fixed" and found that it was still extremely tight, and the corner stitching wasn't fixed. After an overnight rain, there was large drops of water hanging from the underside of the fly. Since there were only two people in the tent, I couldn't believe that it was condensation. After some investigation, I realized that the fly was saturated and rain had soaked through the fly.
Another call was placed to Kelty, and I convinced them to replace the tent with a new one. I sold this tent and am looking for a replacement, possibly the Big Agnes Big House.
We bought 15 of these beasts for a church youth group mission team for camping out in the Cumberlands of Tennessee in July. We got hit with 80 mile-an-hour wind and lost only one tentthe one they didn't tie down. The tents properly set up and staked down? Standing and dry. These truly are beasts.
Huge and roomy! I had no problem with the footprint. I don't plan on sacrificing any room to keep dry in heavy rain storms. With a lifetime warranty, how can I go wrong? I also have a 5-year-old Mountain Hardwear "Hammerhead" also with this warranty. The quality is top notch, and compared to the price of buying new tents; the tent is worth more to me. I simply needed more room and Kelty came through!
Huge! After some setup practice, a single person can setup and steak out properly in 15 minutes. Internal Divider offers reasonable privacy. Great for 4 or 5 people, but youll be living in luxury with 3. Huge Vestibule! Plenty of room to change out of wet or muddy clothes without messing up the interior of the tent, and still leaves enough room to keep gear stowed out of public view. Though Ive heard complaints about no zipper closures on the mesh of the tent, if you want privacy, put the rain fly on! The Rainfly is a full, top to bottom rain fly and, when steaked out properly, provides excellent protection from even severe precipitation events. Good ventilation, but if you have 3 people, humidity, and no wind you will have some condensation on the underside of the rain fly. Some car camping sites may not have a tent pad large enough for this one. Because of its size, you will want to use every steak out every location provided including the two vents on the right and left side of the rain fly. This tent is tall and broad so it needs the extra support in case of high winds.
In the more than 3 years that Ive had it, there have been no leaks, tears, or rips. Occasionally we get a little fabric caught in the zipper, but with careful zipping and unzipping, its always been easy to back out. Its easily stood up to 40 MPH winds with driving rain and kept us dry inside while nearly all others bailed out to their cars.
Well, of course, it is HUGE. But it has a surprisingly sleek shape. A couple features still puzzle me, and the documentation is sparse, but the tent performed marvelously, was extremely comfortable, and went up dead-easy. I was very pleased!
