Kelty Kestrel Lumbar Pack - 550cu in - 2009

Some lumbar packs are so big, it looks like there’s a half a horse riding on your rear. Some are so small that they’re basically pointless. Then there’s the Kelty Kestrel Lumbar Pack. This mid-sized pack holds a light rain jacket, snacks, and water bottles for a day hike, and sunscreen, shades, and guide books for trips into town. The mesh waist-belt tucks away for casual walks—just use the padded shoulder strap or the top carry handle instead.

Bottom Line: For day hikes or casual strolls.

Too big for smaller frames

This pack seemed to have potential to replace a bulkier daypack for longer hikes yet carry my essentials, particularly 2L of water, rain gear and munchies...and then plus some. Unfortunately, it seems I'm a bit too small at 5'4" as all the straps were pulled to the minimum yet there was still some wiggle room. It was really on the edge for me so I opted against it. Plus, I found my water bottles seemed to want to pop out easily as the bottle pouch openings are actually cut at an angle. I can only imagine an awkward movement would result in dumped water down a hill no less. ;) The upside of that is the bottles are really easy to grab which is nice. I also didn't like that the shoulder strap clips were plastic and seemed rather flimsy. One last gripe is that there is no reinforcement of any sort between the water bottle/shove-it pouch and the main compartment. That means if you've got it loaded with water, the bottles' weight end up collapsing the main compartment if it's half empty or you're pulling stuff out/putting stuff in. Likewise, if you unclip the shove-it pouch open, the bottles flop about. Not sure how smaller bottles would behave as I intended to use this with only my 1L chuggers on each side.
