A revision of the classic Vortex, the Kelty Gunnison 2 is a simple, lightweight tent for 3-seasons of use. The mesh panels are strategically located to provide ventilation, decrease condensation, and keep you from feeling like you're spending the night in a cave. Even in the dark, it's easy to secure the aluminum DAC Pressfit poles to the individual clips for set-up. Configured with two doors and two vestibules, the floorplan maximizes the available living space. Other features include taped seams to keep water out and internal storage pockets to help organize essentials.
We've had this tent for 3 years now and have been nothing but satisfied. The vestibules have more than room for 2 packs, boots and supplies and you still have plenty of room to get in and out. Inside, there is plenty of room for the 2 of us, including my 6'-2" frame. It doesn't roll up that small when packed, and it is a tad heavy, but for us it was the perfect starter tent. It has been rained on a couple times and we have had no issues with it at all. The bottom is a bit thin; we made our own footprint using plastic sheeting and it has worked great. Plus with the excess plastic we can have "door mat" to keep from tracking in.
This tent is great! I dont know where to start. The pole set up and design is simple and quick, the fly leaves a great amount of room for gear, but for the weight and size, its a great choice. Ive taken it out in strong wind and rain, had to set it up in a short amount of time, and it held up great to the punishment and got me out of the storm in a hurry. One reason I love this tent, though, more than a lot of others, is the inside size. Unlike a lot of tents that completely over-exaggerate the size, but are much smaller because of the angle of the tent sides, this tent fit perfectly for me at 6 foot 7 inches, and I've fit another person just a bit shorter than me with no problem, and even fit two young women in this tent that lost their fly and needed somewhere to stay in inclement weather. Outstanding tent.
My girlfriend and I are planning a self-supported trans-american bike tour. We'd like something light and free standing without a lot of "crazy poles" with vestibules to protect panniers. We'll be going out in the early spring, so it shouldn't be too cold, but we'll definitely be getting rained on.Think this fits the bill? Will it hold up to 40+ days of camping?
It looks like you've decided on a free-standing tent. This is a basic two pole design with a nice size vestibule for all you gear & two doors for easy access. My main concern would be weight & the Gunnison is a mid to mid-heavy weight three season tent. I think you could certainly get 40+ days + out of this tent. To me the vestibule seals the deal!
I got this tent for a backpacking trip in Alaska. It was the summer so the cold wasn't a problem. The tent is very easy to set up and you can do it in just a couple minutes. There was light drizzle a few times while I camped but nothing much, so I can't comment on the effectiveness of the rainfly. One slightly annoying design for me is that the door bottoms are high enough off the ground where you have to really step into the tent... I caught my foot on the tent about 90% of the time I got in and out of it. No harm done, but I was grunting a little after the third time. Also, this is completely personal preference, but I don't think I like the clear area on the tent and rainfly. I felt like people could see in and one morning I sat up and actually saw a moose a few feet away, looking at me through the clear area. That was pretty cool, but I didn't really feel the same as strangers were strolling by to their own tents. Overall though, the tent did everything I needed it to. Next I'll have to test it with me and another person.
Maybe I'm too late for this, but the answer is, yes! . . . this would be a good tent for your cub scout if only because he's young. He'll grow into or out of it. He may decide he hates backpacking. It doesn't cost that much, which is always a consideration when just getting into something. The only real downside would be that he'll have to haul a five pound tent, but hey––a little sweat out there builds spirit. This is also a very easy tent to set up and it will endure a lot. I had a similar REI tent and it did a great job with all kinds of weather––even Nepal––where I finally donated it to some porters. Again, it's cost-effective, simple, sturdy and maybe just a little too heavy, but you can always dangle a lighter tent as a reward for his (or her) getting out in the backcountry.
This tent is big enoung to fit 2 large men. It sents up very fast and is quite sturdy. The vestibules are large enough to fit all the gear you can carry.
A whiteout like snow whiteout? This is definitely a 3 season tent, with good bag and pad, you can be comfortable to pretty cold temps, but as much as I like mine, I wouldn't go near a whiteout in it.
I've had this tent for about 5 years now, and used it in just about every type of weather Utah has (which is a lot) and it has performed pretty flawlessly. I initially got it because I, like the reviewer below, am quite tall, and this tent had the space I wanted. I also liked the two doors, no climbing over your buddy to go to the bathroom at night. For summer, you can't beat this tent, nice ventilation and durability. Even in the shoulder seasons where it gets a little cooler and wetter, this tent still rocks, the rainfly is functional, and ventilates acceptably when set up correctly. There are lighter and more expensive tents out there, but for the money, you can't beat this one.
This was one of the first tents I purchased to lighten my load. Strictly speaking for its size, I really like it. I had the hardest time finding a longer tent because at 6'6" and 270 pounds, I learned quickly that manufacturers counted a lot of extra floor space which was unusable principally because the slant of the walls. This tent has loads of space, sets up easy, does well in the rain, and overall I highly recommend it. The only gripe I have is that the interior gear net needs to be tied in by hand (it will sag) and the rainfly has no windows and little ventilation.
Bought this tent for backpacking. Lots of room, great rain protection, fairly light and compact, easy to assemble, need I say more? Fairly priced! One of the best in my opinion.
