Keep the bugs at bay while you lounge in the screened-in vestibule of the Kelty Green River, 6-Person, 3-Season Tent. Car camping doesn't get any better than this. The tent has a simple four pole construction so it's easy to put up and sturdy in wind. Its floor seams are taped to keep you dry in the rain and internal storage pockets can hold your playing cards and poker chips. With room to comfortably sleep six you can crash out in style.
Bottom Line: A place to hang out when the bugs or weather get bad.
I bought this tent for family car camping trips and it is perfect. I am 6' 5" and have a couple of kids. It is tall enough for me and roomy enough for the whole family. Not to mention the screened in vestibule which was the reason I bought the tent. All in all a great tent.
Pitched this tent up for the first time in my back yard today. Stretched and laid out the four poles as instructed. Mistaken the fly cover for the tent and couldn't find the holes and which was the top or bottom side of tent. (Strange how nothing match the instruction?) Oh, there is another material inside the bag and it turn out to be the tent. The bigger wrapped material was the fly cover. Now I'm in business. Orientated the tent on the footprint and there I go. It was easy to put up by myself. However, it took an little imagination and resourcefulness to get the fly cover over the top of the tent. Got it by using a rope attached to the fly and throwing the rope over the tent to the back side. Tent has a lot of snaps and tie downs, but it looks great. Wife came out from the house to checked it out. She loves the roomy tent and height with storage compartments. The next time it will take me less time to put up, now that I am familiar with it. Piece of cake.
Many other six person tents have one or two more poles, large vestibules, more tie down points, etc. The Green River is simpler in design & complexity utilizing a clip & sleeve system that greatly aids in pitching.
The Green River set up in the Backcountry training room. So big it holds two other 2-person tents inside and still has enough room left for a queen size bed. Immense!
This tent was a great purchase. It is really roomy the vestibule - which is the reason I bought the tent its very cool. It was tough to put up and nearly impossible to setup alone, however, most tents this size require at least 2 people so that shouldn't be a negative.
Took this with the family, and it was truly massive. Also very envied by the school group. Two-person set up, but straight forward. Love the bug vestibule.
Wow, this thing is a portable house. We have 3 kids(another one on the way now :), and wanted a larger tent. This is a great tent if you plan on staying at the campsite for a few days. For weekend outings, we found it too much to deal with. It takes two people half hour to set it up. We did like the room to stand up in it. But that also made it cooler inside during the night when temps dropped. It didn't keep body heat like a smaller tent. The vestibule is great for storing items. We ended up returning it after two uses. We do a lot of weekend outings, and find taking two smaller tents is more manageable. Backcountry was GREAT about the return!!! I love using this site. Very friendly and helpful.
They performed well on our first family outing. We had a little of everything: wind, rain, chilly nights, sun. Even though I didn't have it fully guyed down, wind was not a problem. I wish the flaps covering the vestibule screens had zippers or hook-and-loop closures. They kind of just sag, probably to allow air-flow through the well-ventilated roof. They must do the job because no wind got into the tent. As a precaution, I seam-sealed the seam around the perimeter of the floor. I had a very small amount of leaking in a backyard test. Overall, lots of room and the steep sidewalls make walking around this tent like walking around your living room.
I just got back from a 10 day camping trip with this tent, and I love it.
As others have mentioned, it is very big. I am 6'2" and could easily walk around in the tent and vestibule. We had a queen size air mattres inside and it took up less than half the floor space. The vestibule was great to keep the bugs and sun out, and plenty big enough for two camp chairs. As previously mentioned, this thing would be nearly impossible to set up by yourself.
I had 1 day/night of very heavy rain and wind, and there were no leaks at all. I think the tent performed very well in the strong winds (much better than other tents i've owned). As long as you stake the tent properly (and use the extra guy lines to anchor it down) this tent handles the wind very well for such a large tent...much better than a lot of tents in campsites near mine that blew down during the night.
My only fault I found with the tent is that the 2 side shades in the vestibule just kind of hang there when they are closed, not really covering the screens all the way. The front 3 shades work very well and securely cover the screens, though. Not a huge problem at all...just thought I'd point it out.
Wow, when they say a six person tent they really mean it. Lots of room, good little storage nets, easy setup. Go for it and invite your entire neighborhood, plenty of room.
This thing is the size of a living room! It is not lacking in size. You would be very talented to be able to set this up alone, so 2 people minimum, but heck if you need that big of a tent, you should not be lacking an extra had to help out. It is not a winter tent. It is not super warm in REALLY cold conditions. So if you are taking it out when it is colder, have a good insulated sleeping pad and a good sleeping bag, but for summer camping with the family this would be great, it has a awesome screen room in the front to store your gear so it does not clog up the sleeping area.
This tent will impress you with its size, thats for sure. You can easily fit 6 people in this thing, and it will work great for family camping. A few thing you do need to be aware of are: It is impossible to set up by yourself. The stitching is really weak and can tear easily. (especially the front flaps for the vestibule poles). This tent is weak in the wind and just bends right over. Not a bad tent, but could have used a few improvements in its design.
Arriving at the campground in darkness after a traffic jam, I was forced to set up the tent for the first time with my wife and a flashlight. (by the way, this was the green river 4, not 6). I have been camping and setting up all kinds of tents for 40 years, and this was a royal pain. The instructions were vague with bad exhibits, and would be brutal to set up alone. The vestibule pole and overall unwieldiness of the fiberglass poles in general is my main gripe.... The tent was nice and roomy once set up...easy to get in and out of. the vestibule covers that go over the mesh windows flap in the wind and don't draw tight, also the vestibule door is tough to zip down all the way without feeling you are going to rip the fly material. But my main reason for sending the tent back...is the fiberglass poles come apart while you are pulling them out of the sleeves..especially the vestibule sleeve, where bunching up made me insane and took 20 minutes to do something that should take 30 seconds. My bad for cheaping out on fiberglass poles, but Kelty should do better than this.
What a really big tent! There was enough room for 6 people, a medium sized dog, and all the gear to boot. Ventilation was great, especially in the harsh summer sun. The only drawback was set up. Theres alot to this tent, at least for what I'm used to (I usually roll with a 2 person), I would make sure to have plenty of daylight to get through it otherwise its just not cool. Also, having a camp spot within close range is key because this tent is pretty heavy and has a large pack size, but what do you want it's a freakin' six person. How far are you really going to hike with it? I mean, all the booze is going to hold you down already. Unless you're He-Man then you're cool. In the end, I'd say get it, pitch it, and party!
