Backpack in the backcountry without spending your life savings with the Kelty Grand Mesa 2, a two-person, 3-season tent. Kelty made this durable tent to be easy to put up and a great value. With just two strong aluminum poles to clip to the tent, setup is a cinch. With a 29-square-foot floor that's wider at the head than at the feet, this tent saves on material and therefore weight but still gives you plenty of room to spread out. Six square feet of vestibule area under the rain fly allows you to store boots outside the door and drag your pack underneath if the weather gets bad. On a warm day, open the window and door—mesh keeps the bugs out yet lets air circulate.
Bottom Line: Get excellent value and a comfy place to sleep outdoors with the Kelty Grand Mesa two-person tent.
The first trip was in May on Rock Island in Lake Michigan. We saw it all weatherwise. First night it thunderstormed and blew 30+ gusts out of south. Rained hard. Wind changed at night to NW. Tent was solid as a rock. Didn't make flapping noises and allowed very little breeze through tent. Next night was 39F and 30+ wind out of North. I was snug and warm. This tent met and exceeded all my expectations. Very light and easy to fit in the Kayak hatch.
This is a great little tent: sturdy, easy to set up and reasonably lightweight. It stood up to a weekend of the worst rain and wind the Scottish highlands could throw at it - and that's saying something.
However, I don't think it's adequate, size-wise, as a 2-person backcountry tent. Why? The tent is comfy inside for 2 people, but it's definitely cozy, leaving very little room inside for any gear. And the vestibule is just too small to realistically store two people's backpacking stuff (backpacks, boots, jackets, etc.) especially if weather is a concern.
As a two-person car-camping tent - when you can leave most of your gear in the car and only need the vestibule for boots or lanterns or whatever - it's excellent. And as a one-person backpacking tent: again, excellent and with ample space. But two people in the backcountry will almost certainly find the storage space insufficient, especially if it's wet and you really need to keep your stuff undercover.
All in all, highly recommended - but with the caveats as described above.
it's always a good idea to get a footprint. you don't NEED it, but think of it as a cheap insurance plan for the life of your tent. it really increases the durability of the tent floor and only adds a little weight to the setup.
For the price a great buy. I purchased the REI Quarter dome for more than double the price of the Grand Mesa and returned it. Quarter dome is a few ounces lighter but Mesa held up. On the first day on the A.T. my partner having decided that he would bring only a queen size sheet for his bedding. Temp. dropped to 50 deg. and he used the rain fly as a bivy until it started raining at which point we reattached the fly to the tent and waited out a four hour rain - no leaks, no moisture, dried quickly, etc... Great buy for a hundy! Rated a 4 because there are lighter tents out there.
Unfortunately, Backcountry.com is out of the Grand Mesa 2 footprints. I'd recommend finding an exact footprint, you'll be happier in the long run. You can easily find one through a google search.
If you are looking for a tent to start out with or you are looking for to save some money but still have quality, I would recomend it. The tent compresses nicely, and sets up easy and in just a few minutes. The part I like was how it kept condensation out. It keeps the warm air in and it's nice and dry in the rain. It stood up to the wind nicely and the durablity hasen't given out yet. I give it five stars for the value of the price.
My friend and myself are going backpacking through Ireland in the late summer for 2 months. While couch surfing will be a common occurence, will this tent hold up? I'm concerned about durability for the price
You won't have any problems with this tent. It's a simple design with two strong aluminum poles that attach to the tent with clips that also strong. This tent has been in the Kelty line for a while now and with good reason, it's simply a reliable tent. Have a great trip!
This tent is very reasonably priced and easy to set up. Definitely enough room for two people to sleep comfortably. I also bought the footprint which has helped to keep the bottom dry, but with the crazy Wyoming weather the tent doesn't do well with continuous moisture even though it's supposed to be a three season tent. Also I've only had mine for a week and the seems have started to tear.
Very good tent for the money. Weighs under five pounds. Used in rainy cold weather in northern Alabama mountains in November. The tent performed well. Enough room for two six foot people. Very pleased with tent.
This is my all time favorite tent. I bought it almost 2 years ago, and it has done everything that I expected from it. Kept me dry in intense down pours and was cool in the summer. This tent is so easy to pack, it turns your overnight pack into a weekend one. I bought a $3 tarp at some sporting good store to put on the ground for my tent floor and it's held up brilliantly.
I've had this tent for a few years now and I've had great luck with it. I bought it because of it's size and light weight for a job I took in Yellowstone NP. I lived out of this tent for nearly three months, and it didn't leak once. On recent trips it has done equally as well, including a rain soaked trip through the presidentials in New Hampshire, and a two cold and rainy trips to the beach! The only thing I would change about this tent is giving it a larger vestibule. This tent has performed better then two eureka tents and a sierra design tent I had in the past.
I'm not sure how little "no hand strength" is (you're typing, so your hands aren't just flaccid lumps), but these will be quite easy to get in place. It's not a high-tech tent, so they don't work very hard on getting the poles really tight.
I really love this tent. I've been using it for about 4 months now, and I can't stress enough how easy it is to set up. It's been through almost every weather condition except snow, and stands up to everything without leaking. My only complaint is that when using the rain fly the ventilation is not so good, making it pretty warm in the tent. This will probably be a good thing in the coming colder months! Excellent price for a great product.
It's a great tent. It has a tiny footprint so, fitting it into a tight flat spot is easy. It's ridiculously easy to set up. Get a compression sack for it and it shrinks down to a sleeping bag stuff sack size. My only complaint is that I use it high in the Colorado Rockies where it gets quite cold at night, and with the rainfly on, which helps keep the tent warm, my breath condenses on the inside of the tent and everything is a little wet in the morning. The one vent on the back of the tent just isn't quite enough to allow moisture to escape.
Kelty makes an awesome product. Everything worked as planned. This was used for a summer backpacking trip, worked fine, the tent even saw a light drizzle and worked great. I used it for one person, two would be a little cramped.
Exactly what all the other reviews will tell you. This tent is at a great price and I havent had a single problem with it. One time i was setting it up while it was raining and some moister got on the tent before I could throw on the rain fly. I guess there are still faint spots on it to this day. Not sure if I can wash it or what. If anyone knows what to do, let me know. Thanks.
No problems here. Mine spent many days and nights last year on the sandy shores of the Snake River in search of Acipenser transmontanus. As long I kept the stakes and guy lines for the fly secure (sometimes a little tricky in the sand, I used rocks to hold the ropes) this thing was bomb proof. Howling winds and driving rains never penetrated. Roomy Enough for myself and my wife + a little bit of gear (We're both about 5'8"). Never had any problems with condensation - I think if you secure your fly correctly thats the trick to good ventilation. Great weight/quality/price ratio.
This tent will stand up to the toughest weather. Trapped in severe thunderstorm in Kentucky over night on a backpack trip with my wife and not a single drop of water got into this tent. Easy setup, light weight, and pretty compressed!
We used this on a 3 day backpack trip in Arkansas in the hot & humid heat of July. Most of the stuff we hung on the line at night was still wet in the AM but our tent was dry (no condensation). We could quickly pack it up in the AM and move on. Our other backpack tent that our kids used took time to dry due to condensation. Definitely worth the price plus I am always amazed how quickly Backcountry ships your stuff to you.
This tent was extremely easy to set up the first time. No need for instructions on this one. It is very convenient with only two poles and external pole mounting system. The only complaint is that no tents are sold with a footprint. But not too worried I just was able to customize my own footprint from an old lightweight tarp. I wish I would have kept the rainfly or some of the material from my old tent because that would be great for a foot print. All in all great tent.
Love this tent. sleeps two+ a chihuahua. Great for summer trips...does well in rain too. I use a tarp underneath mine for extra protection. Only wish is that it had another flap for ventilation. great value for the money!
