Katadyn Exstream XR Purifier Bottle

The Katadyn Exstream XR Purifier Bottle is a lightweight, self-contained water purification system tailored to the solo backcountry traveler. The XR (eXtended Range) model offers a large-capacity 34 oz bottle for longer hikes in arid climates. EPA registered, the Exstream XR purifier removes everything from viruses to Giardia and Cryptosporidium cysts. The simple design fits perfectly into water bottle cages and cup holders, making it awesome for use as a backup water source on bike rides, day hikes, or adventure races. A bite valve allows easy hands-free opening. Treats up to 26 gallons, depending on water quality.

Bottom Line: An ultralight, solo adventurer's favorite, and the best-selling water bottle purifier.

Works Great

i've used this filter on adventure runs. it's great because you can wrap a handheld around it and go. it's a bottle too. so it doesn't feel like you are taking an extra piece of gear with you. that of course makes it a bit heavy. also it's hard to squeeze. like often you really have to work at it. but it gets the job done. i actually prefer iodine on adventures where i'm not sure if i'm going to need to filter or not, just because it's big. also it doesn't filter very fast comparatively. but for what you get that is an ok compromise since it's a bottle and a filter in one.

If you put the carbon filter at the top to help alleviate the iodine taste, does that nullify the warning for people with thyroid problems?

Bought 8 Bottles

I noticed after getting the filters ready for use, that there was a plastic type taste in some of the bottles.I learned here that you can invert the carbon filter to the top, and that fixed it for me. Also, I wonder why they don't publish the warning that if you have thyroid trouble you should not use these bottles because of the iodine which is what created the plastic taste. Now the taste is gone, I like them very much. Glad I read that small warning on the filter because I almost gave one to two people who take thyroid medicine.

If I attempt to improve the taste by relocating the carbon prefilter to the top and after the virustat will the iodine still do its job of killing viruses?

Is there room in the bottle for a corbon filter at both ends of the cartridge system?

Below is the reply I got from Katadyn...

Michael,

Yes, you certainly can. That is how they actually use it in Europe. It is only the EPA requirements in the US that make us show it as a prefilter.
Using it under the cap reduces the virus killing capabilities by fractions of percentage points. Turning it from 99.99% to 99.9something%.

Sincerely,
Sarah

Superb for backpacking/hiking

By:
May 16, 2008

Used it for a week-long canoe trip in the Boundary Waters, and a separate hiking/camping trip in the Smoky Mountains. Loved being able to just dunk the bottle (cap off) into the lake or waterfall stream, re-cap, and drink. I wouldn't recommend it for anyone who must take big gulps of water at a time, but it worked very well for me. No problems on either trip. Purifier and water bottle in one - great for those who don't want to carry a bunch of separate things just to drink water safely.

This is a great way of compromising the "Virustat" properties. In other words, I wouldn't recommend it! This purifier kills viruses & filters out everything else.

Clean H20 to go

By:
September 25, 2008

Just used it in Peru! Was able to dip directly into streams and get some clean, cold Andean water. For those who don't like the strong Iodine taste, you can squeeze (but, it will give your hands a workout)into another bottle and use a kool-aid, crystal light, etc. packet of your choice.

I read in a review somewhere that it takes a while for the water to get purified. (I believe it said it takes 2 hours!?) Is this true? The water that it will have to purify will be horrible water. Does this matter?

I think the 2 hr lag period you're speaking of refers to a certain portion of the directions. Apparently if it's your 1st time using the water bottle, or you haven't used the water bottle in a long time, you need to prime it by passing 2 bottles of water through the filter and then let it sit for 2 hrs filled with water. If you've already primed it through this method and it hasn't been sitting on the shelf for months, then you don't need to prime it again. Then the filter works instantly and there's no waiting. Hope this answers your question.

I thought that as soon as you filtered it, the water was ready to be drank. Not 100% though.

As long as the "Viustat" properties remain intact, this purifier is good for international usage. Still consider your water source. For example, I wouldn't use this or any other water purifier for purifying water taken from the Euphrates River!

Yes, it is. However, you will find it a lot easier to buy bottled water wherever you go. Thesedays, I leave my water purifier at home when traveling abroad.

Great product, a little hard to squeeze, and the flow is slow. But hard to beat the fact you can dunk it in water right out of the boat and drink safely. Great for a third world country trip or as a personal bottle on a hike.

By:
August 31, 2006

Other than being a bit hard to get the water flowing during the initial setup (it'll give your hands a workout), the bottle works great! For the price, it is completely worth it, especially for someone traveling overseas who doesn't want to carry lots of equipment around.

Never travel overseas w/o it

By:
February 10, 2009

I habitually travel to Latin America for surf trips which inevitably involve me in the backwoods/beach camping, and this baby is always with me. I take the pills from the doc, but never trust the water supplies down there. This guy puts my conscience and intestines at ease.

The bottle new is really tough to squeeze. I am guessing with use it will get easier. The water tastes great! I just can't wait to get rid of that new bottle smell.
