Kelty Gunnison 4 Tent 4-Person 3-Season - 2007

A revision of the classic Vortex, the Kelty Gunnison 4 is a simple, lightweight tent for 3-seasons of use. The mesh panels are strategically located to provide ventilation and decrease condensation. Clip connections and DAC pressfit aluminum poles in a basic 2-pole configuration are ridiculously fast and easy to set up securely. Two doors, each with a vestibule, maximize the available floor space inside and make it easy to get out when you have to. Other features include taped seams to keep water out and internal storage pockets to help organize essentials.

Bottom Line: A room with a view.

Awesome Tent

By:

I've had a Gunnison for 6 years now. Best tent I've owned. I first bought a Sierra Designs Clip 3 but after one trip the zipper on the main door broke and I hated having a tent that was not free standing. So I went back to the drawing board and decided to forfeit some weight for added room. The Gunnison was a great choice for me. I don't do much backpacking but do go paddling a couple of times a year as well as some car camping. For the money there isn't a better tent out there. The full coverage vestibule is great. Its a little cumbersome getting in and out with the way the fly is set up but other than that there are no flaws with the design. My last trip to the Boundary Waters was miserable weatherwise. It poured on us for 4 days straight with winds gusting well over 30 mph. The temp at night got down in the mid 40's. We stayed bone dry and warm. The double doors make it easy to get in and out of and the gear loft is a bonus. Great tent.

pretty tent

Very easy to set up. I am a new camper but it is still pretty easy for me. Great venting and color. :)

Although the description says that it fits four people, it is comfortable for just 2 people. My husband is 5' 11" and his feet hit the wall if sleep in the recommended directions.

Simple, functional, good price

I've had very good experience with Kelty tents so bought the Gunnison 4 to replace my last Kelty after 12 years of steady use. Mostly use it for car camping. Tent setup is a snap, good zippers, plenty of head space, if fly is anchored properly there will be good ventilation and protection from rain and wind. I like that you can open a door and stand up through door with feet still in tent for getting dressed and such. Vestibules at both doors gives ample storage for packs, boots, etc. I bought another for my kids and friends use.

review from longtime Kelty tent user

By:
April 27, 2007

We used the Kelty V4 on many car-camping trips for about 10 years. Appreciated the simplicity of design and ease of setup. The zipper on one of the V4 doors finally gave out though we still use it, but we wanted a new tent. The Gunnison 4 seems to be the recent version of the V4 with some significant revisions though basically the same tent. Hooks for connecting tent to poles are significant improvement over previous sleeve design. There's now more netting on the tent and this coupled with vents high on the fly make for improved ventilation. This really makes sense to me. One thing I don't like on the new version is that there are loops for anchoring on only one of the rainfly flaps which means you can't independently tie one flap back but are limited to either both or only the one without loop. This can make a difference for keeping sun out while ventilating. Even though it's a two-pole tent, the anchor points on the fly make it very stable in winds. For $200 this is an excellent value. Would recommend to anyone.

Great Tent

We've been car camping for thirty years, and this tent is perfect - quick & easy to put up, kept us dry without guy ropes, the two doors are great. No condensation at all - great ventilation. Recommend that you also buy the footprint.

Great Tent, Great Price

By:

This is a great tent for the price. Plenty of room for me, my fiancé and my 100lb dog. Good ventilation and it is a piece of cake to set up. Just snap the poles together place the hooks and voila, it’s ready to go.

I really like this tent a lot. Very waterproof. The dual vestibules are a bit small, but functional.

Nice tent

By:
October 10, 2005

The Gunnison is a nice tent, and it goes up fast. On the first night out it took us less than 10 minutes in the dark to set it up. My only concern is the 2-pole design in heavy wind, but I will take my chances. There’s lots of room for 2 adults, a dog and gear. The main reason I bought this tent was for the double doors and dual vestibules.

Best tent out there

Lots of space. It’s dry in the rain even without guy ropes. Double doors make it so versatile. Very affordable. I highly recommend this tent for all car camping and hiking uses.

Gunnison rocks

By:
May 10, 2005

This is the best tent I ever had. I wanted to waterproof it but didn't get a chance. It stood up to heavy wind, rain, and even hail. I was worried about leaving my shoes outside for fear of them being wet when I woke up. That was just silly. The tent was great and I am glad I own it. Bone dry except for the damp spot on the pad that we lay on. We need to buy the footprint. This tent rocks!

I would recommend.

By:

I just got back from camping at Virginia Beach. This tent was very easy to setup. There was just a little condensation at the top of the tent due to the fact that there in not a lot of ventilation there, but there was an easy fix for that. I just un-zipped the rain fly and kept it closed with the hook-and-loop closure. Might think about purchasing a little fan for the future in case it rains and I would have to zip the rain fly. But, the condensation was not that big of a deal. You get a lot for your money.

Kelty tent

By:
August 15, 2005

The tent surpassed my expectations on all counts. Incredibly easy to put up and take down. A strong thunderstorm hit the first night it was up, and we were dry and comfortable. I noticed other tenters at the campsite went out and bought tarps the next day. We didn't need them. Great product.

Nice tent

By:

I camp monthly and normally use a small 1-2 person tent. When I needed a larger tent for a family campout this one came in handy. I particularly wanted the full-coverage rain fly that this one has. A little pricey but well made and will last a long time.

Nice and Roomy

By:
September 6, 2005

We purchased the Kelty Gunnison 4 for the extra room and so far we are very pleased with the way it has performed in the backcountry. The tent seems well constructed and it is super easy to set up. My only complaint is the mesh around the bottom half of the tent. At higher elevations, the cold air just whips right under the rain fly and blows right on your face. This is great for summer time, but spring and fall camping at higher elevations can be a bit chilly.
Overall, a nice and roomy tent without too much added weight.

Satisfied customer

By:

Despite the mesh surrounding the tent and not much privacy when you want to leave the fly off during the summer and warm nights, I like this tent. I really like the tent for it's durability, it's spacious. I like the fact that it has a dual vestibule, and a ventilation system when the fly is on that prevents condensation from building up, and most of all I loved the two rods to hold up the tent. It only took me a matter of minutes to set up; it was fast and easy. I must also say when I first used it, we had three days of constant rain and not once we had any problems staying dry. I certainly recommend this tent.

Great backpacking tent for 3 to 4 people

By:
June 20, 2006

I bought this tent to take backpacking with my three boys on the Appalachian Trail for a week. It met all of my expectations and then some. It is light for the size, and it comfortably accomodated all four of us without bumping into each other. Each of the vestibules will keep two packs out of the elements and close at hand. A great tent for the price!

Best all around tent I have owned.

By:
May 3, 2006

My wife and I did RAGBRAI (a bicycle ride across Iowa) with about 15000 other riders last summer. The first night into the ride a very bad storm with tornado strength winds and rain blew through the campground. I stayed in the tent and had to hold the sides with the wind blowing but never got a drop of rain in the tent. The next morning when we got up we found the storm had destroyed quite a number of other tents in the camping area. This year I have done two week-long bike tours and one weekend ride. I tow a B.O.B. trailer with my recumbent bike. When I set up the tent, which is very easy for one person to do, I can put my trailer under the back vestibule and be able to get into my bag even if it is raining. There is also plenty of room to put my bike on one side and my Thermarest on the other side of the tent with a lot of additional room. The Gunnison “4” makes a perfect companion for either a short or long camping trip, and I very highly recommend it.

Very much Multi Use

By: Backcountry.com Employee

This tent was purchased for two reasons.
1. Car camping with my wife and son.
2. Backpacking with my wife and son.
It is spacious enough that we can feel like we don't need anything bigger car camping, but it’s light and compact enough to backpack with. I plan to use it this summer on a trip with my dad and brothers. One person carries the tent (around 3lb). The second carries the fly (around 3 lb). The third person carries the poles, stakes, and footprint (around 3lb). The forth (my dad) doesn't need to carry anything. We all can fit in the tent and all gear fits in the vestibules. I would highly recommend that you purchase a footprint. They are an essential part of a high quality tent like this. Also it comes with a very useful gear loft as well.

With room to spare

This is fantastic tent. I must state that I have only used it car camping, but it worked great. Don't let all the mesh fool you. When you put the rain fly on (I love that it covers the whole tent!) you have privacy and comfort, and still have air circulation due to the vestiblues. Under heavy rain, the rain fly did seem to trap moisture inside, but if you use the tension cords (is that the right name?) it should keep it from dripping in the tent. I am very pleased with this tent. It is suprisingly light weight for how large and roomy it is.
