A revision of the classic Vortex, the Kelty Gunnison 2 is a simple, lightweight tent for 3-seasons of use. The mesh panels are strategically located to provide ventilation, decrease condensation, and keep you from feeling like you're spending the night in a cave. Even in the dark, it's easy to secure the aluminum DAC Pressfit poles to the individual clips for set-up. Configured with two doors and two vestibules, the floorplan maximizes the available living space. Other features include taped seams to keep water out and internal storage pockets to help organize essentials.
When it was time to purchase a new 2-man tent, I researched and researched. We wanted one that wouldn't break our budget, but also that had 2 doors so when nature calls in the middle of the night, we wouldn't have to roll, climb and smother the other person in the tent to get out. I was surprised at how few there are with just that. We wanted a fly and vestibules to store boots too. It quickly came down to this one. So, my husband and I have this 2 person tent and love it. We have used it most recently the past 2 times in the desert during January where it gets cold. It was in the mid 30's inside our tent and despite the frost outside, on all nights (except one night), we did not have a condensation issue. Mind you, this is not a 4 season tent, so we feel overall this is a great one to be able to be out in that weather and still stay warm. It is a bit narrow but the length helps to make up for it. It isn't an awkward shape, so two people can be side by side and it has dual doors that are super easy to get in and out of too. The fly overhead is designed to really help with the condensation while also providing a plastic window to see out and watch the stars up in the sky, so you don't feel so confined inside like in a tight dark closet. Oh, also really like the little things, like a hammock in the ceiling to hold smaller items like a flashlight, watch and things you don't want to step on or roll over onto and break! There are pouches on the walls too at the top and bottom to help with holding stuff too. This tent is super easy to set up with the color coded, light weight poles and clips and even the clips for the fly are color coded so you don't have to keep rotating the fly to figure out which corner clips in where to align the door to the vestibule. Just a super, lightweight tent with a very reasonable price! We are very pleased with this purchase and enjoy the details put into this tent.
I just got back from my second trip using this tent with my 5 year old daughter and I couldn't be more pleased. She actually was able to set up the tent itself on her own while I gathered firewood and then we put the fly on toghether. Sooo simple and well designed. We really like the windows in the fly, so you can still do a little stargazing with it on! It got pretty cold overnight and I was very suprised to find the tent covered with melting frost as I exited the tent in the morning. There was no indication from the inside that any moisture was occuring. (Many tents I've experienced in these conditions "sweat" on the inside, occasionally dripping water from the fly into any screening and on to me!) Bottom Line: It's relatively inexpensive, light, sturdy, easy to set up and the double vestibules keep shoes, packs, etc. out of the elements AND out of your way. I Love It!!
Haven't had a chance to take this tent out yet, but I have set it up and it looks great. Big vestibules in front of both doors, bathtub floor, and sealed seams are nice. Incredibly easy setup makes it great.
My first time being outdoors and setting up a tent, this tent proved to be a breeze to set up and withstood some heavy rain showers on my climbing trip to Kentucky. The vestibule was roomy and air flow good even with the fly. Make sure the fly is on tight, and rain seepage won't be a problem. A well priced, simple, straightforward, idiot-proof tent that withstands the elements and doesn't weigh too much either.
I needed a tent that was wide enough and long enough to handle my son, who's 6 feet tall and myself (6' 4"). The Gunnison 2 easily accommodated us. We chose to summit Hayden Peak (12,749') in Utah's Uintah Mountains. At 10,870 feet we setup base camp. At around 11:30 P.M., a down-pour of rain changed to 1/4" hail. Our gear stayed covered, and dry thanks to the vestibules which reside on either side of the tent. We were sure glad that the Gunnison 2 provides a water-proof bath tub which kept the tent interior dry. The rain-fly worked flawlessly and took a beating for about 1/2 hour. For the money, you can't beat the Gunnison 2!
Very pleased with the construction. Setup is very fast because of the clips and shock corded aluminum poles. The screen on the top of the tent and vents in the fly provide lots of air movement and certainly help out with summer heat buildup. At about 5.5 lbs, it makes it easy to backpack. I have not found anything with this tent that I dont like.
Well ventilated. Perfect for the dry locales I frequent, like Joshua Tree and Red Rocks. Most times i don't even use the rainfly or stakes, which makes the bundle even lighter.
Spacious. No problem inflating an air mattress inside the tent for car camping, or fitting in two on thermarest pads.
Not thrilled about the fly. You have to contort your body in order to zipper it down all the way and snap it when you are inside. I think I pulled a muscle in my neck one time. I can't imagine a large man trying to do it. Also, the first time I used it there was a storm raging for about three hours and water started to leak inside through the corners of the floor. Easy set up but the attachment on top where the two poles are held together doesn't stay put (one of the poles seems to come out).
This is a great overall tent. It is light weight, and compact. If anyone is undecided on this tent just get it. I am sure you will be very happy with your investment.
I found the Kelty Gunnison to be an outstanding choice for all of my backpacking needs. The assembly takes less than 10 minutes and the rain fly provides more coverage than most I've used in the past. I especially enjoyed the double-vestibule design, as we were able to keep our packs and shoes dry without compromising interior comfort. The tent also features the most easily zipped doors I have ever used. This tent could seem small on the interior for two people if you're not married.
Used this Kelty tent 2 times already. Easy to set up, plenty of room for 1 person. Easy to set up, very quick. Without the fly, I could fall asleep looking at the stars and not have to worry about the bugs. Luckily I haven't had to use it in the rain ... yet.
I got a chance to test it out in Yosemite (low country, about 4000 feet) a few days before New Years. As the other reviewers have stated, it worked like a champ. We got quite a bit of rain the first night, yet we stayed warm and dry inside the tent. Set up was made easy by the color coding on the rain fly, so even in the dark after a few medicinal shots of whiskey it was quick and painless. I haven't had it out in high winds yet, but so far so good. For the relative low cost of this tent, it is an excellent buy.
I used this tent for a couple of long weekends of camping this spring. Its lightweight, durable, and has good ventilation. Its easy to put-up and pack-up which is helpful when moving from site to site. A good deal for the price.
LOVE the size of these bags. They're easy to pack and great for the price (compare to bags that cost 2 or even 3 times more). Only downside is the temperature rating. You WILL be awake for most of the night if the temp gets below 35. I wore fleece pants, socks, and a fleece jumper and still woke up shivering at 30 degrees. Next week, tried it at 40 degrees and everything felt great. Stick to 35+, and you'll enjoy it!
The Gunnison is simple to set up and a light two-person tent with extra internal nets and pockets. The screens allow for star gazing with lower screens that enable one to lie in their sleeping bag and watch wildlife. The only recommendation is to make sure your tarp is staked in during a rainstorm as those nifty lower screens can let in precipitation.
